Me Yes! I know it! I know it! It’s delicious! I LOVE it. Yum, yum! Yowza!
私 うん！ それなら知ってる！ 知ってる！ おいしいよね！大好き。うまうま！ いいね！
Dali Yes, it does indeed sound delicious. It’s a problem for the izakaya staff, but many gaijins like to ask questions in izakayas. Now, if a gaijin sees fried cheese on the menu and thinks it sounds good, he might ask the cute waitress girl, “This fried cheese, what kind of cheese is it?” The waitress, “…” He continues, “Did you hear me, waitress girl? What kind of cheese is this?” She replies, “It’s Yukijirusi cheese.” The gaijin says, “No, no, NO! I am not asking for the name of the purveyor. I’m asking about the kind of cheese. Is it a Cheddar cheese? Swiss cheese? I mean the kind of cheese, not the purveyor!!”
ダリちゃん そうだね。実においしそうな響きだね。居酒屋の従業員にとっては迷惑な話だけど、居酒屋で質問したがる外国人は多いんだ。でね、ある外国人がメニューでチーズフライを見ておいしそうだと思ってかわいいウェイトレスの女の子に「このチーズフライ、チーズは何？」と質問する。ウェイトレスは「・・・」。外国人は「お姉ちゃん、聞いてくれてる？ 何のチーズなの？」と続ける。ウェイトレスは「雪印チーズでございます」と答える。外国人は「ノー！ ちがう、ちがう！ 供給業者の名前じゃなくて、チーズの種類を聞いてるの。チェダーチーズなの？ スイスチーズなの？ チーズの種類！ 業者じゃなくって！」と言う。

私 ワー。僕、「雪印チーズ」が好き！
Dali So, the gaijin gives up on the silly waitress, and asks Taisho, “Taisho, what kind of cheese is this?” The Taisho, speaking no English, shows the gaijin the label on the cheese, which shows Yukijirusi Hokkaido Cheese. This is incredible for the gaijin!
ダリちゃん で、その外国人はおバカなウェイトレスには見切りをつけて、店の大将に「大将！ チーズの種類は何ですか？」と聞く。大将は英語はしゃべらないがその外国人にチーズのラベルを見せる。ラベルには「雪印北海道チーズ」と書いてある。このことは外国人にとっては信じられないことだ！

Dali Japanese people are not concerned with the type of cheese. When the Japanese think of cheese, they think of different types of processed cheese. I will give you an example of this.
ダリちゃん 日本人はチーズの種類には関心がない。日本人でチーズといえばプロセスチーズの種類を思い浮かべる。例を挙げよう。

Dali I was once working at a small English language school. It was a small class of four students. We were talking about our favorite foods. I opened the talk with, “My favorite food is cheese. But not all cheese. For example, I don’t like Camembert cheese. Do you like cheese?” And a very cute girl raised her hand, “Yes, Dali-chan Sensei! I LOVE cheese!” I said, “Oh, wonderful! What’s your favorite cheese?” She said, “Eh---, just cheese, I like cheese.” I continued to ask her, “I know, but what’s your favorite cheese? What cheese do you enjoy? Nobody likes all kinds of cheese, in the same way, that nobody likes all fish or vegetables.” She finally replied, “Ah…My favorite cheese is Yukijirusi Torokeru cheese!”
ダリちゃん わしはかつて小規模な英会話教室で働いていた。4人の生徒の小さなクラスだった。わしらは好きな食べ物のことについて話してたんだ。わしは「わしの好きな食べ物はチーズ。でもチーズなら何でも、というわけではない。たとえばカマンベールチーズは好きじゃない。皆さんはチーズは好きですか？」と話を切り出した。それでとてもかわいい女の子が手を挙げて「はい、ダリちゃん先生！ わたし、チーズが大好き！」と言った。わしは「それは素晴らしい！ 好きなチーズは？」と言った。彼女は「えー、チーズはチーズよ、チーズが好きなの」と言った。わしは続けて「それはわかるけど、何のチーズが好きなの？ 好んで食べてるチーズは？ チーズなら何でもと言う人はいないでしょう？ 魚なら何でも好きとか、野菜なら何でも好きとか言う人、いないのと同じで」と尋ねた。彼女はようやく「えー、わたしの好きなチーズは雪印とろけるチーズなの！」と答えた。
