Non-defining clauses are used to add additional information and are common when describing cause and effect. The relative pronoun which refers to the previous clause.

The rise in non-communicable diseases, such as coronary heart disease and diabetes, has been put down to tobacco, alcohol, less active jobs, and a large shift to a diet that is high in fat and sugar.
Among children, however, communicable diseases, such as cholera and tuberculosis, remain the major cause of death as modern drugs, health education, and basic sanitation standards elude those who need them most.
