I have come to Jerusalem today as a novelist, which is to say as a professional spinner of lies.
私が今日エルサレムを訪れましたのは，小説家として，つまり嘘を騙ることを生業としている者としてです。
Of course, novelists are not the only ones who tell lies.
もちろん，小説家だけが嘘を騙るわけではありません。
Politicians do it, too, as we all know. Diplomats and military men tell their own kinds of lies on occasion, as do used car salesmen, butchers and builders.
政治家もまた嘘を騙ることは，よく知られているところです。外交官や軍人もときに，それ相応の嘘を騙ります。中古車のセールスマンや食肉業者，建設業者と同様にです。
The lies of novelists differ from others, however, in that no one criticizes the novelist as immoral for telling them.
けれども，小説家が騙る嘘は他の人びとが騙る嘘とは異なっています。小説家はたとえ嘘を騙っても，倫理に反するとして批判されることがないからです。
Indeed, the bigger and better his lies and the more ingeniously he creates them, the more he is likely to be praised by the public and the critics. Why should that be?
事実，小説家の騙る嘘が大がかりで巧みであればあるほど，小説家が嘘を創り出す手立てが巧みであればあるほど，小説家は大衆や批評家から賞賛される可能性が高くなっていくのです。なぜなのでしょうか。

My answer would be this: Namely, that by telling skillful lies - which is to say, by making up fictions that appear to be true - the novelist can bring a truth out to a new location and shine a new light on it.
この問いに私はこう答えたいと思います。つまり，巧みな嘘を騙ること，真実だと思える小説を創り出すことによって，小説家は真実に新しい居場所を与え，真実に新しい光を投げかけることができるからだ，と。
In most cases, it is virtually impossible to grasp a truth in its original form and depict it accurately.
多くの場合，真実を原型のまま把握し，それを正確に描写することはおおよそ不可能です。
This is why we try to grab its tail by luring the truth from its hiding place, transferring it to a fictional location, and replacing it with a fictional form.
だからこそ，私たちは真実の痕跡をつかみ取ろうとして，真実を日陰から誘い出し，それを小説という場に移し替え，小説という形式に置き換えるのです。
In order to accomplish this, however, we first have to clarify where the truth lies within us.
けれども，これを果たすためには，まず初めに，真実が私たちのなかのどこにあるのかをはっきりとさせておく必要があります。
This is an important qualification for making up good lies.
これは，嘘が優れた嘘である上で大切な条件なのです。

Today, however, I have no intention of lying. I will try to be as honest as I can. There are a few days in the year when I do not engage in telling lies, and today happens to be one of them.
けれども，今日は嘘を騙らないつもりでいます。私はできるかぎり率直であろうと思います。１年のなかで数日だけ，私は嘘を騙らない日があります。偶然にも今日はそういう日の一日なのです。

So let me tell you the truth.
ですので，この場で皆様に真実をお話しすることをお許し頂きたい。
A fair number of people advised me not to come here to accept the Jerusalem Prize. Some even warned me they would instigate a boycott of my books if I came.
かなり多くの方々から，この場に立ち，エルサレム賞を受賞することは控えるべきではないか，と助言を頂きました。中には，この場に私が立つようなことがあれば，私の著書に対する不買運動を起こすと警告する方さえいました。

The reason for this, of course, was the fierce battle that was raging in Gaza.
このように言われる理由は，もちろん，激しい戦闘がガザを襲っているからです。
The UN reported that more than a thousand people had lost their lives in the blockaded Gaza City, many of them unarmed citizens - children and old people.
国連の報告によりますと，1000人を超える人命が封鎖されたガザ市で失われています。その多くは非武装の市民，子供や老人です。

Any number of times after receiving notice of the award, I asked myself whether traveling to Israel at a time like this and accepting a literary prize was the proper thing to do, whether this would create the impression that I supported one side in the conflict, that I endorsed the policies of a nation that chose to unleash its overwhelming military power.
受賞の知らせを受け取ったあと，何度も何度も，私は自問いたしました。このような時期にイスラエルを訪れ，文学賞を受賞することは，はたして適切なふるまいなのか，そして，これによって私が紛争の一方を支持しているという印象，圧倒的な軍事力を行使することを選択した国家の政策を私が是認したという印象をもたれてしまうのではないか，と。
This is an impression, of course, that I would not wish to give. I do not approve of any war, and I do not support any nation. Neither, of course, do I wish to see my books subjected to a boycott.
このような印象を，もちろん私は与えたいとは思ってはおりません。私はいかなる戦争に対しても，いかなる国家に対しても支持を打ち出すことはありません。そして，言うまでもないことですが，自分の著書が不買運動にさらされるところを見たいとも思いません。

Finally, however, after careful consideration, I made up my mind to come here.
けれども，慎重に考えた上で最終的に，私はこの場に立つ決断を下しました。
One reason for my decision was that all too many people advised me not to do it.
その理由の一つは，このような決断を下すべきではないと助言くださる方があまりにも多くいたことにあります。
Perhaps, like many other novelists, I tend to do the exact opposite of what I am told. If people are telling me - and especially if they are warning me - "don't go there," "don't do that," I tend to want to "go there" and "do that." It's in my nature, you might say, as a novelist.
おそらく，多くの他の小説家もそうでしょうが，私には天の邪鬼なところがあります。「そこへ行くな」「それをするな」と言われると，ましてやそういう警告を受けると，私は「そこへ生き」，「それをする」ことを望んでしまうところがあるのです。それは小説家としての私の性分なのかもしれません。
Novelists are a special breed. They cannot genuinely trust anything they have not seen with their own eyes or touched with their own hands.
小説家というのは特殊な生き物で，自分の眼で見たことがないもの，自分の手で触れたことがないものは何一つ本当に信じることができない存在なのです。

And that is why I am here. I chose to come here rather than stay away. I chose to see for myself rather than not to see. I chose to speak to you rather than to say nothing.
そういうわけで，私はいまこの場におります。私は遠くにとどまるのではなく，この場に立つことを選択しました。私は何も見ずにいることではなく，自分の眼で見ることを選択しました。私は沈黙を貫くことではなく，皆様に語りかけることを選択しました。

This is not to say that I am here to deliver a political message. To make judgments about right and wrong is one of the novelist's most important duties, of course.
