ナイヤビンギ・ミュージックがグラミー賞に初めてノミネートされた。ローリング・ストーンズ(Rolling Stones)のギタリストであるキース・リチャーズ(Keith Richards)とスカの偉人であるジャスティン・ハインズ(Justin Hinds)のコラボレーションによる「The Wingless Angels Deluxe Limited Edition」はグラミー賞の“Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition”カテゴリーに選出された5つのアルバムの1枚だ。第54回グラミー賞のセレモニーは今年の2月12日にロサンジェルスのステイプルズ・センターで予定されている。

2010年の9月にリリースされたこのアルバムは長期に渡ってキース・リチャーズのマネージャーを務めたジェーン・ローズ(Jane Rose)とジャマイカ音楽業界のベテラン、ウェイン・ジョブソン(Wayne Jobson)によりプロデュースされた。

「あれは魔法のようなセッションだった。ジャマイカが誇る偉人の1人であるジャスティン・ハインズとロック界の偉人であるキースが組んで作った歴史的なアルバムだ。このアルバムを録音した後、ジャスティン・ハインズがこの世を去ってしまったとき私たちは皆途方にくれたが、このアルバムの中で天才は生きている」とウェインの兄弟で、このプロジェクトに参加したブライアン・ジョブソン(Brian Jobson)は語った。

このアルバムはレゲエ・カテゴリーに選出される予定だったが、レゲエでなくナイヤビンギとしてみなされたため“World”カテゴリーでのノミネートになったとウェイン・ジョブソンはオブザーヴァー紙に語った。ナイヤビンギはラスタファリの3大要素であるボボ・シャンティ(Bobo Shanti)、トゥエルブ・トライブス・オブ・イスラエル(Twelve Tribes Of Isreal)のうちの1つである。

リチャーズが最初にジャマイカに訪れたのはダイナミック・サウンズ(Dynamic Sounds)でローリング・ストーンズと‘Goats Head Soup’を録音した1970年代だった。彼は最終的にスティア・タウンの農村のラスタファリアン・コミュニティーに程近いセント・アンの入り江に身を置いた。そこで彼はその10年前にヒットを飛ばした‘Carry Go Bring Come’で知られるジャスティン・ハインズと出会った。

リチャーズとハインズの友情は続き、ウィングレス・エンジェルス(Wingless Angels)と自らを名乗るスティア・タウンに住むラスタファリアンのチャンターたちとナイヤビンギのジャム・セッションを始めた。

1990年代中期リチャーズはエンジェルスたちをセント・アンの自宅に連れて行きクリス・ブラックウェル(Chris Blackwell)のアイランド・レコーズ(Island Records)からリリースされたウィングレス・エンジェルス初となるアルバムを録音した。

その10年後リチャーズは再度ウィングレス・エンジェルスをセント・アンの丘の小さなスタジオに連れて行き、リチャーズがプロデュースをした彼らの2枚目のアルバムを録音した。

ナイヤビンギ・ミュージックはレゲエに多大な影響を与えてきた。1950年代にフォーク・ブラザーズ(Folk Brothers)により製作された‘Oh Carolina’はルーツ・グループのカウント・オジー・アンド・ザ・ミスティック・リヴェレーション・オブ・ラスタファリ(Count Ozzie And The Mystic Revelation Of Rastafari)をフィーチャーした。

そして1970年代にはラス・マイケル・アンド・ザ・サン・オブ・ニガス(Ras Michael And The Son Of Negus)がトミー・コーワン(Tommy Cowan)によりプロデュースされた名曲‘Jah Jah Children No Cry’を含むアルバム「Rastafari」で大きな成功を手にした。

Keith Richards became friends with Hinds in late 1972 during a trip to Jamaica. The Rolling Stones were in Jamaica to commence work on the “Goats Head Soup” album at Byron lee’s Dynamic Sounds Studio.

Keith Richards recently had this to say about Hinds:

“Justin is numero uno. He’s a diamond. When he comes to mind or when you hear his voice, you just get a nice warm glow. He was always incredibly attuned to what was going on around him, and he would calm other brothers down if they were getting too jumpy, or stop a fight from going on if he had to.”

“The thing is he wasn’t really reggae. He was more rocksteady or ska—that’s what he was into. And on top of that, man, he had the best threads. [laughs] He was just an incredible dresser. I don’t know if he had the tailors working full time or what, but I’ll always remember his style—it was amazing.”


“Wingless Angels 2″ features recordings made in the year before Justin Hind’s death on March 16, 2005. Keith Richards is featured on guitar, bass and vocals.

The original “Wingless Angels” and “Wingless Angels 2″ will be released as a double album, with lavish liner notes on September 23.
