Uses of PTFE Industrial Coating

2018-01-04 16:25:57 | PTFE
Most people have never heard of PTFE industrial coating, but when you mention Teflon, a look of understanding passes easily on their faces. PTFE (Polytetrafluoro Ethylene) is the technical name of the material, and it’s commonly sold under the Teflon brand name, which is manufactured by DuPont. Dr. Roy Plunkett, a researcher who worked at DuPont, is credited with developing PTFE industrial coating in the late 1930s.
PTFE Industrial Coating
Teflon is probably best-known for its role as the non-stick surface inside cookware. This is because PTFE industrial coating is one of the most slippery materials that’s in existence today. In addition to being slippery, the material also brings a number of other features to the table, offering high temperature resistance, little reaction to most chemicals, and reduced stress cracking and corrosion. These features make Teflon perfect for numerous applications, including:
Cookware – As already mentioned, the slippery surface created by Teflon makes it perfect for cookware. Many brands offer lines of cookware that are coated with PTFE in order to prevent food from sticking to the pots and pans. This reduces the need for cooking oil because these pots and pans are naturally non-stick.
Nail polish – That smooth surface that doesn’t crack is often achieved through the use of PTFE industrial coating.
Hair styling tools – Hair straighteners and curling irons are often coated with Teflon because of the high temperatures emitted by these tools.
Windshield wiper blades – There are numerous applications for PTFE industrial coating within the automotive industry as well. The blades of windshield wipers are the most notable because the smooth surface enables them to glide smoothly across the windshield.
Fabric and carpet protection – Stains are less likely to stick to carpets or fabrics that have been treated with PTFE industrial.
Chemical and steel industries – Hoses and other machine parts commonly handle some highly corrosive substances that sometimes are transferred at extremely high temperatures. PTFE industrial coating is one of the best materials to handle this type of use because it addresses all of the problems that are otherwise caused by working with chemicals or steel. Every type of hose will deteriorate over time, but those that are made of PTFE industrial coating will do so much more slowly than those made of other materials because of the many features of the material.

What is PTFE used for?

2018-01-03 15:03:18 | PTFE
PTFE know as Polytetrafluoroethylene is used in the plumbing industry but is also used outside the plumbing industry. The plumber would use Polytetrafluoroethylene mostly on the male thread of a radiator valve going into the radiator. Emergency plumbers normally use PTFE on emergencies when it comes to old fitting that will not tighten up more than they should do. Some people get a little mixed up when using Polytetrafluoroethylene on fitting and must be aware that any PTFE should go on the olive rather than the thread as the thread will only make this harder to complete the work and more than likely cause a leak and resulting in the customer searching around for emergency plumbers.
What is PTFE used for
PTFE is used extensively in many different industries:
Petrochemical and chemical processing: PTFE is the material of choice for gaskets, vessel linings, pump interiors, washers, rings, seals, spacers, dip tubes and well-drilling components because it is corrosion resistant and chemically inert; it is unaffected by virtually all acids and caustics and functions in environments to 500 degrees F..
Electrical applications: PTFE is one of the best insulators known. In thin sections, it will insulate to 500 volts per mil. There are grades of PTFE which have even greater dielectric strength. It is frequently used in wire and cable wrap, and to separate conductive surfaces in capacitors. Thick walled close-tolerance extruded tubing is the PTFE shape of choice where machining or drilling long lengths to close tolerances is impossible. Multi-hole tubing can be extruded. PTFE can be machined into standoff insulators, and many different types of high voltage encapsulation devices for electrical components.
Semi-Conductor Industry: PTFE is inert, and its operating temperature range is from minus 350 degrees Fahrenheit to 550 degrees Fahrenheit. When made to ultra pure standards it is the material of choice for various items used in chip manufacturing, including encapsulation devices for quartz heaters, and the like.
Food, Beverage and Pharmaceutical industries: Virgin PTFE is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in the food, beverage, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. Thin Film and sheets make an inert, no-toxic slide surface without microscopic depressions where microbes can grow. Conveyancing components - profiles, guide rails and slides - can withstand high temperatures inside baking and drying ovens and other heated segments of the food, cosmetics or pharmaceuticals manufacturing processes.
Laboratory applications: PTFE piping, tubing and vessels are used in various laboratory ware because of their chemical resistance, and inertness. No contaminants adhere to the surface.
Bearing pads: Glass filled PTFE can be cut or stamped into bearing pads, and will resist all weather-related degradation while remaining an inert interface between disparate construction materials, like steel and concrete.
PTFE Compounds: Various fillers can be blended with the PTFE base resin to enhance certain properties, e.g. glass fiber, glass bead, carbon, graphite, molybdenum disulfide, bronze, etc.
PTFE does not melt; it cannot be molded into complex shapes, but must be machined. PTFE is easily machined using standard mechanical woodworking and stamping equipment and tooling. Most shapes are sold slightly oversized for easy trimming and machining to exact sizes

Can ptfe be used on gas?

2017-12-27 16:19:05 | PTFE
When connecting gas pipelines and their fittings to a stove, grill or other connection, it is important to use Teflon tape designed for gas connections and not Teflon tape designed for water pipes. Teflon tape seals the gas fittings' threads and keeps leaks from developing. The Teflon tape for gas fittings is available at hardware, home improvement and plumbing supply stores.
Can ptfe be used on gas
Teflon tape for gas fittings, also known as gas-rated Teflon tape, is yellow in color and clearly states it is for gas lines and connections. The tape works on all gas line types, including butane, propane and natural gas lines.
Apply gas-rated Teflon tape only to the fittings' threads. Do not apply the tape to gas compression connections, the removable nuts and bolts used to connect two gas pipes together. Gas fittings are on the ends of gas lines and are not removable. Turn off all gas connections at the gas meter outside your home or business before disconnecting or attaching gas lines to appliances.
After applying the tape, connecting your gas lines and turning the gas back on, mix 2 teaspoons dishwashing liquid and 1 cup of water in a pot. Dip a cloth or rag in the soap solution and swab the solution on the gas fitting. If you see bubbles forming on the fitting, you have a gas leak. Immediately turn off the gas source and tighten the gas fitting. Then turn the gas back on and test the fitting again. If the solution is still bubbling, turn off the gas, disconnect the fitting and check the fitting for dirt, debris or damage. Clean the fitting thoroughly, and reapply gas-rated Teflon tape. Repeat the testing process. Have a professional replace the gas line if the soap solution continues to bubble.
If you use plumber's Teflon tape on gas pipe fittings, the tape will degrade over time and gas vapors will escape from the fitting. Plumber's Teflon is white in color and thinner than yellow gas-rated Teflon tape. Leaking gas pipes and fittings are dangerous and can cause an explosion. If you are uncomfortable applying gas-rated Teflon tape to gas fittings, contact a plumber or repairman specializing in gas connections and repairs to complete the gas pipe installation or repair.
