JUSTIN SMILEY RECIPIENT OF DOLPHINS’ 2009 ED BLOCK COURAGE AWARD‏

MIAMI – The Miami Dolphins today announced that Guard Justin Smiley was named the winner of the teams 2009 Ed Block Courage Award. The award is given annually to a player from each NFL team who have been selected by their teammates for their extraordinary courage in the face of adversity.
Smiley missed the final month of the 2008 season after suffering an ankle and leg injury during the Dolphins 16-12 victory over the St. Louis Rams on November 30, 2008. The six-year pro from Alabama returned in 2009 to the starting lineup and provided veteran leadership to a young Dolphins offensive line that paved the way for a rushing attack that enters the final week of the 2009 regular season ranked fourth in the NFL. The rushing attack is led by running back Ricky Williams who this season broke the NFL record for longest span between 1,000-yard rushing seasons. Williams' last 1,000-yard season came in 2003, six seasons ago. Williams also became just the seventh running back in NFL history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season in which they were 32+ years old at the start of the season.

The Courage Award is named after Ed Block, the longtime head athletic trainer of the Baltimore Colts who was a pioneer in his profession and a respected humanitarian. The inaugural Ed Block Courage Award was presented in 1978 to Baltimore Colts’ defensive end, Joe Ehrmann. Following the Colts’ departure from Baltimore in 1984, the scope of the award expanded to include one player from every team in the NFL.
Smiley, along with the other honorees from around the league, will be recognized at the 32st annual Ed Block Courage Award banquet on Tuesday, March 9 at Martin’s West in Baltimore, Md. Tickets, tables, or information about the 2009 Ed Block Courage Award Foundation banquet can be found by calling 410-821-6252 or visiting www.edblock.org.
