Shula, Saban share views

Sun Sentinel

Nick Saban has drawn favorable comparisons to ex-coach Don Shula for his no-nonsense style, so it's no surprise the two had plenty to discuss at a recent meeting at Dolphins headquarters.

"I was at the complex a few weeks ago and Coach Saban wanted to say hello," Shula said through the media relations department.

"I stopped by his office and we talked about a variety of things for almost an hour. He was very interested in what we had accomplished here in the past and the tradition of the Dolphin franchise. I think he will do a great job building a winning team again."

The encounter indicates Shula will remain welcome around headquarters just as he was during the tenure of ex-coach Dave Wannstedt.

One of Wannstedt's first moves when taking the job in 2000 was repairing damage to the relationship between the Dolphins and Shula caused by Jimmy Johnson, who wanted to downplay the team's storied history after being hired to succeed Shula in 1996.

Saban also has reached out to his replacement at Louisiana State University. The Louisiana Gannett News Service recently reported Saban spoke with coach Les Miles about LSU's talent before spring practices and even submitted a personnel report written in longhand.

"He's been very accessible to me," Miles said.

"He's done everything he could to help. ... He has great friends here in Louisiana, and he really wants to assist in our success in any way."

Draft gambit failed

The Dolphins worked so hard at trying to convince franchises with high picks in April's draft that they were going to make Braylon Edwards the second overall choice that team officials were constantly in touch with the Michigan wide receiver's representatives until just 10 minutes before selections began.

The bluff didn't work, as Cleveland refused to trade up for Edwards.

The Dolphins selected tailback Ronnie Brown at No. 2 and Cleveland used the No. 3 pick on Edwards, who wasn't thrilled at being part of a smoke screen.

A look back

Shula recently took a special interest in visiting Soldier Field on a business trip to Chicago.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Shula asked his limousine driver to pull over so he and wife Mary Anne could take a look at renovations at the stadium.

They received a personalized tour from Soldier Field's general manager.

Shula was 5-2 coaching the Dolphins against the Bears, including a 38-24 home victory in 1985 that drew the highest television ratings in Monday Night Football.

The Dolphins haven't played a regular-season game at Chicago since 1991 but will next season.

Etc.

Defensive tackle Keith Traylor received a $250,000 signing bonus as part of the two-year, $1.785 million contract that he signed last week. ...

Even after word surfaced that Ricky Williams was planning to play for the Dolphins in 2005, a sporting goods store in Gainesville was selling a "limited edition" collectible figurine of the retired tailback for just 99 cents. The original price was $20. ...

Kudos to members of the Dolphins' rookie class for speaking last week with troubled youths at the Broward County Detention Center. But tight end Joe Munson could have made a better clothing selection than a Miller High Life T-shirt for the event. ...

On the team's Web site, Saban shed some light on how cornerback Will Poole suffered a serious knee injury at a minicamp practice that was closed to the media and public. "Will was playing a deep ball and jumped up to make a catch," the coach said. "On his way up, he twisted and came down with an injury." The Dolphins will meet with ex-Chicago cornerback R.W. McQuarters on Tuesday as a potential replacement.

Dolphins offensive line angry, upbeat

2005-05-27 | Weblog
Sun Sentinel

DAVIE -- While it might pale in comparison to past guarantees made by the likes of Joe Namath, Mark Messier and Alonzo Mourning, Dolphins center Seth McKinney vowed that last season's porous offensive line would show a dramatic improvement this year.

"We do have a lot to prove," McKinney said. "We were looked down upon everywhere, and we're going to turn it around. I could guarantee we're going to turn it around."

McKinney and offensive lineman Wade Smith are excited about the teachings of new offensive line coach Hudson Houck.

"Everybody is buying in [to the system], and everyone has a new attitude how to do things, the techniques we're learning," said Smith, who was replaced at left tackle by Damion McIntosh after last season's second game.

"It's showing up when we're out there practicing. That it's working gives the guys confidence."

Smith, who is competing with McKinney for time at center as well as learning every other position on the line, is ready for some payback.

"I wouldn't say we owe something, but as far as anger, there's definitely a chip on our shoulder ... about a lot of stuff that went down in the past, so that's stuff we have on our minds," Smith said.

McKinney started all 16 games last season as part of a beleaguered line that allowed 52 sacks.

He's not ready to surrender his starting spot.

"I expect [to start] completely," McKinney said. "That's what I'm working toward. Who wouldn't?"

今年はOL頑張って、ちゃんとQBに球を投げさせてあげてください。

Dolphins sign Traylor to two-year deal

2005-05-24 | Weblog
Miami Herald

The Miami Dolphins signed free agent defensive tackle Keith Traylor to a two-year contract Monday.

The 6-foot-2, 340-pound Traylor was released by the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots earlier this month.

Miami is the fifth NFL stop for Traylor, a 13-year veteran who was drafted as a linebacker by Denver in the third round of the 1991 draft. Traylor has 459 career tackles, including 13 sacks, and has forced 11 fumbles while recovering three more.

To make room for Traylor, the Dolphins waived linebacker Billy Strother.
