Michiko's Japanese Class Notice Board

A Notice Board for my Japanese language classes at ACC

Intermediate on 9/25

2007-09-26 | Beginners II before Fall 2009
Today we had two students, and together we did some exercises of giving reasons using 「~し」.

Grammar Explanation: Textbook げんきII pp. 11-13
Exercises: Textbook pp.19-20 II-A & B

We also reviewed how to make/construct "short form past tense" from "polite form past tense".
ex.) わかりませんでした → わからなかった
The best way is to think like this: (1) polite form past tense → (2) polite form present tense → (3) short form present tense → (4) short form past tense.

(1) わかりませんでした(pol/past) → (2) わかりません(pol/present) → (3) わからない(short/present) →(4) わからなかった (short/past)

The point of today is that you need to use a short form sentence when you use that sentence as a clause, such as 「~し」reason clause.

It was a fun class today. Hope we can continue like this from next week too!

Intermediate class on 9/4 & 9/11, and next class

2007-09-13 | Beginners II before Fall 2009
On 9/4, we had 3 students. 1 is advanced, 1 is actually at a beginner level, and 1 is more or less with an intermediate level. As a compromise, we studied and did some exercises of Chapter 13 from Genki II. We mostly did the exercise of "Volitional verbs"(ex. わたしはピアノがひけます。わたしは泳げません。etc.)

On 9/11, we again had 3 students. 1 is advanced, and the other 2 are between beginner and intermediate levels.
Since we had a guest teacher Asuka on that day, we were parted in 2 groups: with the advanced student we had just a free conversation, and with the beginner-intermediate students Asuka led a conversation with them using basic sentence patterns.

I have decided to ask the advanced student to meet me for a free conversation at another time of the week, outside ACC.
So from next class, I hope that we will have more students of similar intermediate levels.
We are going to start studying Genki II more methodically from next time in this intermediate class.
