Another Hiragana and katakana sites

2008-09-19 | Useful Sites/Tools
Timo gave me the link to another useful website to learn hiraganas and katakanas to share with other students.

http://www.realkana.com/practice/

Timo says: [On this website] you can select rows of the Hiragana/Katakana tables to practice and the typeface to use and the website will display random characters (from the selected set) and you have to type in the romanji equivalent. I found it really usefull, at least for reading practice.

I include this link on my "links to useful sites" on the left-hand bar.
Thank you Timo, for sharing a useful information!
I hope other students will find this useful too.

Audio Resource website for Genki textbook

2008-02-22 | Useful Sites/Tools
A very good news for the students who are studying with the textbook GENKI I.
Nick found this website and kindly gave me the link to share with other students.

Loyola University: Genki I Audio Files

On this website, you can listen to all the important dialogues, vocabulary, exercises of GENKI I recorded in Japanese. I highly recommend it.
The recording is a bit slower than the normal (natural) speed of native Japanese speakers' conversation, but I think it is good for a start.
Thank you Nick!!
You can also use the audio resources which I made for you --- it is almost the same speed and articulation as normal/natural way of speech of native speakers.

Nick also shared with us the link for Enya's singing of a Japanese song, Sumiregusa (I think it is not a traditional Japanese song but composed/written by a contemporary composer and poet, but its lyric is in Japanese).
It is quite beautiful, I found, so please visit the link if you are interested.

Dason's blog site

2008-01-24 | Useful Sites/Tools
I just found out that Dason (Tatsuya) who joined our class since yesterday (1/22) has started his own blog site as "a reflection on my Japanese class at ACC". Wow... it is quite amazing!

I suggest that you visit the website when you have time to, and leave comments for him when you can.

Useful sites recommended by Zoran

2007-11-08 | Useful Sites/Tools
Zoran gave me the following links as useful sites for studying Japanese.
I hope you will explore them by yourself and make the most of the sites which you have found useful.

- A "quick-and-dirty" bidirectional dictionary
"Not recommended for any serious work, but fast enough for quick queries. (Z)"

- Conjugation Builder
"Indispensable for a beginner such as myself. (Z)"

- Wikipedia article on Japanese particles

- A growing discussion on Japanese grammar

- Jim Breen's WWW JDIC dictionary server
"This site has a very powerful translation feature, where you can paste text in Japanese and have it translated part-by-part. Knowledge of sentence structure and particles is required to construct the proper meaning. (Z)"

I have quickly browsed these websites myself, and so far I think that the most useful one among these is "Conjugation Builder" website.

"A growing discussion on Japanese grammar" and the Wikipedia article about Japanese particles can be a little confusing and overwhelming to beginners at a very early stage.

But these are my personal opinion, so please do explore them and see what are useful to you by yourself.

AND... THANK YOU Zoran, for sharing these with us!

Good Dictionary for Japanese Learners

2007-09-27 | Useful Sites/Tools
Today I found a good dictionary for English-speaking Japanese learners.
Please check it out at the following link: Kodansha Frigana EJ/JE Dictionary (amazon.com)

I think that one of the most important and useful tools for learning a new language is a good dictionary.
On my way to master English I have used so many different dictionaries, and through my experience I am convinced that a good dictionary or two is/are essential to really master the language.

Dictionaries are made through long-year efforts by so many people including the best linguists available at the time. Considering that fact, good dictionaries are worthwhile of purchase, even if the price seems to be a little expensive for you at the moment of purchase. The more you use it, the more it will pay you back!

So.... Let's make friends with a good dictionary!!

N.B. This post does not mean to force you to buy a dictionary right away. Maybe you don't need to buy a dictionary for now if you are a total beginner. But when you become interested in buying a dictionary, please remember to make all the efforts to get the best dictionary available for you. You probably can browse available dictionaries online, and/or browse the dictionaries that are held in the university's library, so that you can see which dictionary is best for you.

Japanese drama & anime websites

2007-09-13 | Useful Sites/Tools
You can find a link to the websites where you can download/watch Japanese dramas and animes in the following blog sites.

気ままにYoutube
日刊Youtube

My favorite website linked from these blog sites is "veoh", because this is an English website and you can watch some Japanese dramas and animes with Japanese sound and English subtitles. Many other websites linked from the above two blogs are actually Korean websites, and since I cannot read Korean, these websites are a little useless for me...@@;

For example, at veoh, you can watch the anime version of "Nodame Cantabile", which is one of the most popular mangas in Japan recently. → Nodame Cantabile
