2009-02-25 | Beginners Class before Fall 2009
2/23/2009 was the 5th class of the Spring Semester 2009, and we had 8 students yesterday.

Summary:First lesson of the Lesson 4 of Genki I: 「[things]があります」「[person(s)/animal(s)]がいます」, and 「[place]に[things]があります」「[place]に[person(s)/animal(s)がいます」

Note that you need to always use 「」for this sentence format, not 「」.
*Compare it to the one we have learned previously: 「わたしがくせいです。」(=I am a student.)「このかばん5000円です。」 (=This bag is 5000 yen.)
Whereas, in the new sentence format to talk about the existence of things/persons and locations of things/persons, 「かばんあります。」(=There is a bag.) and 「この町[まち]に大学[だいがく]あります。」(=There is a university in this town.)

Exercises we did:
(1) Review exercise of Lesson 3 (homework) - presentation of each student
(2) p. 83-I-A
(3) p. 83-I-B

Homework:
I have noticed that there are quite a few students who haven't really mastered the markers (sentence particles) such as は、が、を、に、で.
I strongly suggest you study hard and master them now, not later than now. We will learn more particles later and it is REALLY IMPORTANT that you can use them smoothly and understand them without any difficulty. Sentence Particles are one of the most important features in Japanese language, and it is critical for you to learn and master each of them as soon as you learn them. If you can use markers/particles smoothly, your Japanese become very fluent, but if you don't, you suffer from faltering way of speech. From my own experience, in any language learning, it is very important that you can speak as smoothly as possible (note: this means that you can speak without stopping too many times, and doesn't necessarily mean that you have to speak without mistakes) to have real conversations with native speakers. So, this is the time for you to take it seriously and make real efforts, if you haven't yet!!

2009-01-27 | Beginners Class before Fall 2009
Yesterday we had 19 students including 9 new students.
It turned out to be quite a "dense" class I thought, because I attempted to do so many things in one class - from each student's self-introduction to hastily going over what I taught in the Beginners class in the last semester and to reviewing the verb conjugation (which was the subject of our last couple of classes in the last semester).
So I hope you didn't get totally overwhelmed, or frustrated not being able to do enough actual speaking exercises yesterday!
I assure you that, from next class on, things will be less condensed and you can do more actual exercises.

Summary of the class: Review of the last semester, especially focusing on the verb conjugations of polite form (~ます/~ません), and markers (particles) such as topic marker(は), object marker(を), place marker(で), and time marker(に)

Exercises we did:
(1) p.65 I-A
(2) p.65 I-B (but with different set of verbs and situations, using my hand-made cards)

Homework:
For those who found it difficult to follow the class yesterday, PLEASE REVIEW and make efforts to CATCH UP!! If you have any questions in the course of your learning, you are always welcome to ask me questions via emails.
