Beginners II on 10/20/2008

2008-10-22 | Beginners II before Fall 2009
Yesterday we had 4 students; we finished Lesson 6 and started Lesson 7.

What we did yesterday are:
(1) Acting out the dialogue of Lesson 6 in pairs. It was fun! ;-)

(2) Introduction to Lesson 7: 「~ています」
「~ています」form has two different meanings depending on which verb is being used in that form.
For example:
ex 1: 私は本(ほん)を読(よ)んでいます。 I am reading a book right now. 読む belongs to Group 2 verbs.
ex 2: 私は結婚(けっこん)しています。 I am married. 結婚する belongs to Group 3 verbs.

How to differentiate/identify which group (between Group 2 and Group 3) a certain verb belongs to is as follows:

If you can make a natural sentence using 「一時間」(いちじかん)(="for one hour")with that verb, the verb belongs to Group 2.
Otherwise, it belongs to Group 3.
For example:
ex1: ○ 私は一時間本を読んでいました。 I was reading a book for an hour.
ex2: × 私は一時間死んでいました。 I was being dead for an hour....???

(3) Exercise p.142 A, B and C
The exercise C turned out to be hilarious!! Maybe we should do this again next week as a review of te-form :-)

(4) Review and Learning the expressions of how to call Family Members of your own family and other person's family
(textbook p. 149)

I noticed that most of you need to review/practice the te-form(てーform) again! Please find time and practice!!
