ことわざがテーマのところ。
Love is blind: あばたもえくぼ
Opposites attract: 正反対同士は引き合う
Money doesn’t grow on trees: 木にお金は実らない(無駄遣いをいましめる意味)
A fool and his money are soon parted: 馬鹿とお金は縁が無い
You can’t teach an old dog new tricks: 鉄は熱いうちに打て

Many hands make light work: 人手が多ければ仕事は楽になる

テキストに載っている以外にもいろいろことわざを教えてくれたはずなのだけど、
メモってなかったみたいで……もったいないことをした。
逆に、こっちからテキストに載っていないことわざをスラスラ披露できたら、
ポイント高いような気がした。

G17 Standards have fallen (Talking about education)

テキストはほとんど使わず、彼が用意してきた新聞記事もほとんど使わず。
テーマは日本の英語教育について。
いろいろ言いたいことがあるトピックなので楽だった。
オイラが学生の時代は英語の授業は読み書きばっかりで、英会話は習ったことありません。
と本当のことを言ったら、スティーブはまじでビックリしてた。

彼が学生時代に中国語を勉強していたときのエピソードが面白かった。
実際に中華レストランへ行って、習った中国語を実際に使ってみる授業があったそうな。
なんて羨ましい！
ナマの外国語を聞いて、実際に使う場があれば、ものすごく刺激的だと思う。

2006年2月12日 NOVA G7/G40

G7 Mega-Mart comes to Mayfield (Talking about the effects of big busi-ness)

エマ(英)
長いことNに通っているとテキストの同じところを何度もやらされることになる。
当然レッスンに飽きてきて、
マンネリ化→学習意欲減退→どうでもよくなる、
というふうに悪い方向へ行ってしまいがち。
彼女の場合、テキストとは適度に距離を置いて、
独自のアイデアでレッスンを展開してくれるので、いつも新鮮だし飽きがこない。
オイラは彼女のレッスンが大好きで、彼女に当たるとものすごく嬉しい。
しかも、テキストに載っていない使える表現をたっぷり教えてくれるので楽しみ。
頭の回転が速いし、たいへん貴重な人材！

ところが、つい最近離職することを本人から告げられショックを受ける(泣)。
彼女の脱退は痛い！痛すぎる！！

つかみはインターネットの功罪。
インターネットの使い道を10個ほど挙げて、よい点と悪い点を比較。
知識の共有ができたところで、
Do you think an increase in internet shopping will be good or bad?
というテーマでディスカッション。
いい面は便利さ。
悪い面は情報漏洩、詐欺、中毒性というあたりで落ち着いた。

G40 I can take it or leave it (Talking about tastes in art)

イアン(たぶん米)
Eからヘルプできた人。
つかみはどんな芸術が好きか？みたいな話題を振られたような記憶……。
フランス印象派の絵が好きなので、芸術関係のときはいつもこれで。
ワシントンD.C.のナショナル・ギャラリーや、ニューヨークのメトロポリタン美術館で
たっぷり名画を堪能した話をすればOK。

テキストに載っている9枚の絵を見ながら、それぞれの特徴や感想を述べていく。
テキストべったりのレッスンだったけど、初めてやるユニットの場合はそれでいいかも。
しかし、印象度という点ではあまり記憶に残らない。

と訊いてみたけど満足のいく解答は得られなかった……。
ネイティブにわからないものを日本人はどうやって理解すればいいのでせう？

彼のレッスンはいつも当たり。
というか楽ちん。
こちらの調子が悪くても、向こうが勝手に雰囲気を盛り上げてくれるので。
変に気を使わなくていいのがありがたい。

レッスンのつかみはテキストにあるとおり、
Think of wild animal.
What kind of habitat does it live in?
How is it adapted to its habitat?

テキストに載っている白熊や象などの写真を見ながら、
それぞれの動物の生態について説明するのをもとめられる。
動物についての知識がものをいうところなので、
単純に知っている・知らないで大きな差が出るような気がした。
外見から推測して言うのもありだけど、
日本語で知っていても、英語で何ていうかわからないと非常に苦しい。

T父さんのレッスンに当たるのは今年初めて。
くじ運が悪いとしかいいようがない。
T父さんは、オイラとレッスンに当たるとニコニコしながら教室に入ってくるので、
こっちも嬉しくなってくる。

テーマはお笑いについて。
「好きなコメディアンは誰か？」と必ず訊かれるところなので、
いつもDavid Lettermanと答えることにしている。
日本人の芸人を挙げても、向こうはたいてい知らないし説明するのが面倒くさい。
でも、Davidなら余計な説明は不要。
アメリカの文化に興味があることもアピールできて一石二鳥。
T父さんも彼の”Top 10 Lists”が大好きだということがわかって盛り上がった。
ヨカッタ！

Main Language
The TV show (Champs) is a (situation comedy) that really (cracks me up).
A lot of people find (Ed Murray’s) brand of (satire) (hilarious),
but (I just don’t get it).
A lot of newer comedy today isn’t very (witty).
It’s all (slapstick), (corny one-liners) and (crude humor).

That cracks me up.

テキストに載っているスコットランドとベルギーのジョークは、
オチがさっぱりわからないんですけど(汗)。
笑いのツボは国によって千差万別ですね……。

このユニットがめぐってきたとき、
気の利いたジョークのひとつでもいえればポイント高い。
どっかからアメリカン・ジョークでも仕入れておこうか。

久しぶりに英会話ネタを展開してみました。
プロレスネタとのギャップが……。

いろんなグラフを英語で説明するのがテーマ。
もし、英語でパワーポイントを使ったプレゼンする機会があったら、とても役に立つところ。

日本の世代別人口推移を示したグラフから何が読み取れるか？
テキストには2005年のグラフと2050年の予想グラフが掲載されている。
少子化問題とか老齢人口増加など。
これらを解決するためにどうすればいいか？みたいな話まではいかなかったような記憶……。

変化の仕方をあらわす動詞や副詞を使う練習など。

G5 It's Morally wrong

久々のチャレンジされるレッスン。
テキストにはほとんど触れず、"cencorship"について話し合う。
イスラム教の預言者ムハンマドの風刺漫画をデンマーク紙が掲載した問題についてどう思うか？とか。
自分はこのニュースは知っていたけど、問題のマンガはまだ見ていない。
イスラム教では偶像崇拝は禁止なんですね。
報道の規制と言論の自由をどう両立させるかとても難しい問題。
結局時間内では結論が出なかったッス。

P.S.
明日生まれて初めてプロレスをナマで観戦します。
ドキドキ。
Yahoo!ブログで「日向あずみ」を検索すると、まったくヒットしなかった……。

G31 Any questions?

スティーブ(米)
わしが非常に苦手とする"Making a presentation"がテーマ。
わしはプレッシャーに弱くあがり症なので、人前で何かするのは大の苦手である。

テキストにはほとんど触れなかったので、Main Languageは割愛します。
最近世の中を騒がせているニュースを何点か挙げていき、
その報道に使われそうな単語をformalなものとinformalなものを考える。
たとえば、皇室典範問題だったら、
descendant → children
BSE問題だったら、
restrict → not allow
などなど。

後半はVoiceルームへ連行され、
テレビのニュース番組を想定したロールプレイ。
最初にリポーターが現地からニュースを伝え、
ディレクターがその内容をアンカーマンに説明し、
最終的にスタジオからアンカーマンがニュースを読む。
アンカーマンはVoiceルームの外に出されて、リポーターが何を言ったかを聞くことができない。
しょっぱなに自分はアンカーマンをやらされた。
何のニュースだったっけ？今となっては覚えていない。
もう死にそう……。

G45 Who would you trust

フランク(加)
つかみは"Who would you trust to take money out of bank for you?"
あれ？暮れに同じ講師で同じところやったな……。
coworker, rep at the local bank, neighborhood kid, neighbor, aunt
の中から選んで、なぜその人が信用できるかを説明せよというもの。

そのあと、どのような職業の人が信用できるか？という話題になった。
ホリエモンが槍玉にあがった。
講師陣の間でもホリエモンは有名なようだった。

最後は、休暇の間仕事の代役を立候補してくれた人を断るロールプレイング。
せっかくの申し出を上記の表現を駆使して断っていくのは、ちょっと面白かった。
