にわとり組曲 -YardBird Suite-

「ヤードバード」は“雑役をする労務者または兵士”といった意味ですが、文字通り訳すと「ニワトリ」になります。これ実はチャーリーパーカーのニックネームでした。後に略して「バード」と言われるようになりましたが、彼の古い友人ディジーガレスピーはずっと「ヤード」と呼んでいたそうです。“YardBird Suite”のオリジナルタイトルは“What Price Love?”でしたが、今では「ヤードバードスィート（ヤードバード組曲）」としてすっかり有名なスタンダードナンバーになりました。美しいメロディーで、パーカー自身が歌詞をつけたことも特筆ものだと思います。著作権に拘らなかった彼らしく、タイトルも歌詞も他人による別バージョンが存在するのが、かえって面白いですね。私は、パーカーが作った失恋の詩より、エディ・ジェファーソンのパーカーを讃えた詩の方が好きです。両方の歌詞を下に紹介しておきます。パーカーがイゴール・ストラヴィンスキーを敬愛していたことは有名で、代表的なバレエ組曲「火の鳥（FireBird Suite）」をもじって、誰かがこのタイトルを付けたのでしょう。
　最近私は、ロイ・ハーグローブのデュオ演奏で、この曲を楽しんでいます。
