老人は女中に先へ帰るようにいいつけて、そのうしろ姿を見おくってから、
「先生、じつはきょう、こんな手紙を受けとったのです。」
と、ふところから例の、二十面相の予告状をとりだして、釣りざおばかり見ている探偵の顔の前へ、つきだしました。
The aged man ordered the maid to go back, saw her walking away.
"Actually, Master, I recieved this letter today."
He took out the letter from Twenty Faces and showed it to the detective who was just watching his fishing rod.
「ああ、また逃げられてしまった……。こまりますねえ、そんなに釣りのじゃまをなすっちゃ。手紙ですって？ いったいその手紙が、ぼくにどんな関係があるとおっしゃるのです。」
"Oh, the fish's gone again. What a bother. You are disturbing my fishing. A letter? What has that letter to do with me?"
明智はあくまでぶあいそうです。
「先生は二十面相と呼ばれている賊をごぞんじないのですかな。」
左門老人は、少々むかっ腹をたてて、するどくいいはなちました。
Akechi's curt attitude didn't change whatsoever.
"Don't you know the thief called Twenty Faces?"
Getting irritated, old Samon said sharply.
「ホウ、二十面相ですか。二十面相が手紙をよこしたとおっしゃるのですか。」
名探偵はいっこうおどろくようすもなく、あいかわらず釣りざおの先を見つめているのです"
"Well, Twenty Faces. Are you telling me that Twenty Faces sent you a letter?"
The detictive wasn't surprised at all, watching the end of the fising rod.
そこで、老人はしかたなく、怪盗の予告状を、自分で読みあげ、日下部家の「お城」にどのような宝物が秘蔵されているかを、くわしく物語りました。
Since there was no other way, the aged man read the letter out loud by himself and told what kind of treasure he had in his castle in detail.
「ああ、あなたが、あの奇妙なお城のご主人でしたか。」
明智はやっと興味をひかれたらしく、老人のほうへ向きなおりました。
"Oh, so you are the owner of that odd castle."
Finally Akechi seemed to get interested, turned to the aged man.
「はい、そうです。あの古名画類は、わしの命にもかえがたい宝物です。明智先生、どうかこの老人を助けてください。おねがいです。」
「で、ぼくにどうしろとおっしゃるのですか。」
"Yes, I am. Those antique paintings are irreplaceable treasure for me. Master Akechi, please help me, please."
"Well, how can I helf you?"
「すぐに、わたしの宅までおこしねがいたいのです。そして、わしの宝物を守っていただきたいのです。」
「警察へおとどけになりましたか。ぼくなんかにお話になるよりも、まず、警察の保護をねがうのが順序だと思いますが。」
"I'd like you to come to my house now, and keep my treasures safe for me."
"Have you reported to the police? You should do that before asking me."
