「アッ、明智先生、賊です、賊です。」
思わず大声をあげて、寝ている明智の肩をゆさぶりました。
"Oh! Master Akechi, the thief, the thief!"
He shouted and shook the shoulder of sleeping Akechi.
「なんです。そうぞうしいじゃありませんか。どこに賊がいるんです。夢でもごらんになったのでしょう。」
探偵は身動きもせず、しかりつけるようにいうのでした。
"What? How boisterous. Where is the thief. You must have seen a dream."
The detective didn't budge, just said that with scolding tone.
なるほど、今のは夢か、それとも幻だったのかもしれません。いくら見まわしても、黒装束の男など、どこにもいやしないのです。
I see. It was a dream. Or maybe a phantom. There was no one there as he looded around now.
老人は少しきまりが悪くなって、無言のままもとの姿勢にもどり、また耳をすましましたが、するとさっきと同じように、頭の中がスーッとからっぽになって、目の前にもやがむらがりはじめるのです。
The old guy felt awkward, came back to his spot and listen carefully. Then again, his head bacame blank, his eyesight got blurred.
そのもやが少しずつ濃くなって、やがて、黒雲のようにまっくらになってしまうと、からだが深い深い地の底へでも落ちこんでいくような気持がして、老人は、いつしかウトウトとねむってしまいました。
The mist was getting thick to be like a black could eventually. He felt like he was sinking to a dark abyss and before he knew he was sleeping.
どのくらいねむったのか、そのあいだじゅう、まるで地獄へでも落ちたような、おそろしい夢ばかりみつづけながら、ふと目をさましますと、びっくりしたことには、あたりがすっかり明るくなっているのです。
How long he slept? Whole time he had horrible dreams like he was in a hell. To his surprise it was bright already when he woke up.
「ああ、わしはねむったんだな。しかし、あんなに気をはりつめていたのに、どうして寝たりなんぞしたんだろう。」
"I must have slept. But how could I sleep, I was under extreme tension.
左門老人はわれながら、ふしぎでしかたがありませんでした。
見ると、明智探偵はゆうべのままの姿で、まだスヤスヤとねむっています。
Samon couldn't understand it himself.
Akechi was still sleeping as he was last night.
「ああ、助かった。それじゃ二十面相は、明智探偵におそれをなして、とうとうやってこなかったとみえる。ありがたい、ありがたい。」
老人はホッと胸をなでおろして、しずかに探偵をゆりおこしました。
"Oh. Thank God. It seems like Twenty Faces hasn't come because of Akechi. How grateful."
Feeling relieved he shook the detective quietly.
「先生、起きてください。もう夜が明けましたよ。」
明智はすぐ目をさまして、
「ああ、よくねむってしまった……。ハハハ……、ごらんなさい。なにごともなかったじゃありませんか。」
といいながら、大きなのびをするのでした。
"Master, wake up. It's morning already."
Akechi opened his eye soon.
"Oh, I slept well. Ha, ha. Look, nothing has happened."
He said as he stretched himself.
「見はり番の刑事さんも、さぞねむいでしょう。もう大じょうぶですから、ご飯でもさしあげて、ゆっくりやすんでいただこうじゃありませんか。」
「そうですね。では、この戸をあけてください。」
"The watching detectives must be sleepy. Now we can give them the breakfast and let them have a good rest."
"You're right. Then, open the door."
老人は、いわれるままに、懐中からかぎをとりだして、締まりをはずし、ガラガラと板戸をひらきました。
The old guy took the keys out, unlocked and opened the door as he was told.
ところが、戸をひらいて、部屋の中を一目見たかと思うと、老人の口から「ギャーッ。」という、まるでしめころされるような、さけび声がほとばしったのです。
However as he opened the door and have a look at the room, he made a such a horrible scream as if he was strangled.
