「ちくしょうめ、おぼえていやがれ。」
男は、とうとうあきらめたものか、口の中でのろいのことばをブツブツつぶやきながら、門の外へ出てきました。
"Damn it! You'll be sorry for this."
The man seemed to give up, went out of the gate mumbling something cursed.
さいぜんからのようすを、すっかり見とどけた乞食は、浮浪人をやりすごしておいて、そのあとからそっとつけていきましたが、明智邸を少しはなれたところで、いきなり、
「おい、おまえさん。」
と、男に呼びかけました。
The beggar who saw everything let the street person pass and started to follow him. Suddenly he called the man when they got some distance from Akechi residence.
"Hey, you."
「エッ。」
びっくりしてふりむくと、そこに立っているのは、きたならしい乞食です。
"What?"
The street man turned and saw a dirty beggar.
「なんだい、おこもさんか。おらあ、ほどこしをするような金持じゃあねえよ。」
浮浪人はいいすてて、立ちさろうとします。
"Ah, just a beggar guy. I'm not rich to give you any money."
The street man was walking away saying that over his shoulder.
「いや、そんなことじゃない。少しきみにききたいことがあるんだ。」
「なんだって？」
乞食の口のきき方がへんなので、男はいぶかしげに、その顔をのぞきこみました。
"No, it's not that kind of thing. I'd like to ask you something."
"What?"
His way of speaking was not like a beggar, so the man looked at his face skeptically.
「おれはこう見えても、ほんものの乞食じゃないんだ。じつは、きみだから話すがね。おれは二十面相の手下のものなんだ。けさっから、明智の野郎の見はりをしていたんだよ。だが、きみも明智には、よっぽどうらみがあるらしいようすだね。」
"I look like this but I'm not a beggar. It's between you and me, I work for Twenty Faces. I was watching Akechi from this morning. It seems like you are holding some grudge against Akechi."
ああ、やっぱり、乞食は二十面相の部下のひとりだったのです。
Oh, the beggar acutually was one of Twenty Faces' followers.
「うらみがあるどころか、おらあ、あいつのために刑務所へぶちこまれたんだ。どうかして、このうらみを返してやりたいと思っているんだ。」
浮浪人は、またしても、にぎりこぶしをふりまわして、憤慨するのでした。
"Grudge? I was in prison because of him. I want to avenge it on him somehow."
The street man said angrily brandishing his fists again.
「名まえはなんていうんだ。」
「赤井寅三ってもんだ。」
「どこの身うちだ。」
「親分なんてねえ。一本立ちよ。」
「フン、そうか。」
乞食はしばらく考えておりましたが、やがて、何を思ったか、こんなふうに切りだしました。
"What's your name?"
"Trazou Akai."
"Who are you working for?"
"No one. I'm on myself."
"Uh, I see."
The beggar was pondering for a while, and then he said.
「二十面相という親分の名まえを知っているか。」
「そりゃあ聞いているさ。すげえ腕まえだってね。」
"Do you know the boss, Twenty Faces?"
"Of course I know. I've heard he's great."
「すごいどころか、まるで魔法使いだよ。こんどなんか、博物館の国宝を、すっかりぬすみだそうという勢いだからね……。ところで、二十面相の親分にとっちゃ、この明智小五郎って野郎は、敵も同然なんだ。明智にうらみのあるきみとは、おなじ立ち場なんだ。きみ、二十面相の親分の手下になる気はないか。そうすりゃあ、うんとうらみが返せようというもんだぜ。」
"It's more than that, he's like a magician. Next plan is to steal national treasure form the museum. By the way, for Twenty Faces, Kogorou Akechi is like a foe. We are the same on holding grudge aginst Akechi. Why don't you work for Twenty Faces. Then you can avenge on him."
赤井寅三は、それを聞くと、乞食の顔を、まじまじとながめていましたが、やがて、ハタと手を打って、
「よし、おらあそれにきめた。兄貴、その二十面相の親分に、ひとつひきあわせてくんねえか。」
と、弟子入りを所望するのでした。
Hearing it, Torazou Akai stared at the beggar a moment and clapped his hands,
"All right. I do that. Bro, let me meet the boss, Twenty Faces."
He asked to work for him.
「ウン、ひきあわせるとも。明智にそんなうらみのあるきみなら、親分はきっと喜ぶぜ。だがな、その前に、親分へのみやげに、ひとつ手がらをたてちゃどうだ。それも、明智の野郎をひっさらう仕事なんだぜ。」
乞食姿の二十面相の部下は、あたりを見まわしながら、声をひくめていうのでした。
"Yeah, of course. My boss will be happy to see you holding grudge against Akechi. But before that, how about rendering some service for him. It's abducting Akechi."
The Twenty Faces' subordinate in a beggar's figure said in whisper looking around carefully.
