Violence of Akechi
「え、え、きみは何をいっているんだ。何もぬすまれてなんかいやしないじゃないか。ぼくは、つい今しがた、この目で陳列室をずっと見まわってきたばかりなんだぜ。それに、博物館のまわりには、五十人の警官が配置してあるんだ。ぼくのところの警官たちはめくらじゃないんだからね。」
"What, what are you talking about? Nothing was stolen. I just patroled whole gallery. Plus we have 50 policemen around the museum. My men are not blind."
警視総監は、明智をにらみつけて、腹だたしげにどなりました。
The chief of Metropolitan Police shouted angrily glaring at Akechi.
「ところが、すっかりぬすみだされているのです。二十面相は例によって魔法を使いました。なんでしたら、ごいっしょにしらべてみようではありませんか。」
明智は、しずかに答えました。
"Still, whole things have been taken. Twenty Faces used the magic like always. Let's check it out if you like."
Answered Akechi calmly.
「フーン、きみはたしかにぬすまれたというんだね。よし、それじゃ、みんなでしらべてみよう。館長、この男のいうのがほんとうかどうか、ともかく陳列室へ行ってみようじゃありませんか。」
"Huh, you are saying they really are stolen. All right then, let us go see. Director, let's go to the galleries anyway."
まさか明智がうそをいっているとも思えませんので、総監も一度しらべてみる気になったのです。
There would be no chance that Akechi was lying, the chief of Metropolitan Police inclined to investigate.
「それがいいでしょう。さあ、北小路先生もごいっしょにまいりましょう。」
明智は白髪白髯の老館長にニッコリほほえみかけながら、うながしました。
"That's a good idea. Why don't you come with us, doctor Kitakouji."
Smiling, Akech said to the old director with white hair and beard.
そこで、四人は、つれだって館長室を出ると、廊下づたいに本館の陳列場のほうへはいっていきましたが、明智は北小路館長の老体をいたわるようにその手を取って、先頭に立つのでした。
The four of them went from the director room to the gallery in the main building via the corridors. While time Akechi walked ahead of them taking the hand of old Kitakouji tenderly.
「明智君、きみは夢でも見たんじゃないか。どこにも異状はないじゃないか。」
陳列場にはいるやいなや、刑事部長がさけびました。
"Mr. Akechi, didn't you have a dream or something? There is nothing happened."
As soon as they entered the gallery, the chief detective shouted.
いかにも部長のいうとおり、ガラス張りの陳列棚の中には、国宝の仏像がズラッとならんでいて、べつになくなった品もないようすです。
He was right. There were Budda statues in the showcases fronted with glass, it seemed nothing was missing.
「これですか。」
明智は、その仏像の陳列棚を指さして、意味ありげに部長の顔を見かえしながら、そこに立っていた守衛に声をかけました。
「このガラス戸をひらいてくれたまえ。」
"You mean this?"
Akechi pointed at the showcase of Budda statues and called the guard, looking back at the chief detective meaningfully.
"Please open this glass door."
守衛は、明智小五郎を見知りませんでしたけれど、館長や警視総監といっしょだものですから、命令に応じて、すぐさま持っていたかぎで、大きなガラス戸を、ガラガラとひらきました。
The guard didn't know Kogorou Akechi by face, still because there were the director and the chief of Metropolitan Police, he immediately opened the big glass door using his keys.
すると、そのつぎのしゅんかん、じつに異様なことがおこったのです。
Next moment, the weirdest thing happened.
ああ、明智探偵は、気でもちがったのでしょうか。彼は、広い陳列棚の中へはいって行ったかと思うと、中でもいちばん大きい、木彫りの古代仏像に近づき、いきなり、そのかっこうのよい腕を、ポキンと折ってしまったではありませんか。
Oh, has the detective Akechi gone mad? He went into the showcase, approached the biggest wooden statue and snapped off its beautiful arm.
しかもそのすばやいこと、三人の人たちが、あっけにとられ、とめるのもわすれて、目を見はっているまに、同じ陳列棚の、どれもこれも国宝ばかりの五つの仏像を、つぎからつぎへと、たちまちのうちに、片っぱしからとりかえしのつかぬ傷ものにしてしまいました。
He was too swift. One to another, he made five more National Treasure Budda statues into something irreparable as the three of them as dumbfounded as they could be, just opened their eyes wide, forgetting to stop him.
あるものは腕を折られ、あるものは首をひきちぎられ、あるものは指をひきちぎられて、見るもむざんなありさまです。
One of them was broken their arms, another one beheaded and another lost its fingers. It was atrocious.
