A Prophet Without Honor
Jesus left there and went to his hometown, [ accompanied by his disciples ]. [ When the Sabbath came ], he began [ to teach in the synagogue ], and many [ who heard him ] were amazed.
“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom [ that has been given him ]? What are these remarkable miracles [ he is performing ]? Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.
Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.” He could not do any miracles there, except (he could) lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve
Then Jesus went around [ teaching from village to village ]. [ Calling the Twelve to him ], he began [ to send them out two by two ] and gave them authority over impure spirits.
These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. [ Whenever you enter a house ], stay there [ until you leave that town ]. And [ if any place will not welcome you or listen to you ], leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”
They went out and preached [ that people should repent ]. They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.
John the Baptist Beheaded
King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is [ why miraculous powers are at work in him ].”
Others said, “He is Elijah.”
And still others claimed, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago.”
But [ when Herod heard this ], he said, “John, [ whom I beheaded ], has been raised from the dead!”
For Herod himself had given orders [ to have { John arrested } ], and he had [ him bound and put in prison ]. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, [ whom he had married ]. For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful [ for you to have your brother’s wife ].” So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted [ to kill him ]. But she was not able to, [ because Herod feared John and protected him, { knowing ( him to be a righteous and holy man ) } ]. [ When Herod heard John ], he was greatly puzzled; yet he liked [ to listen to him ].
Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the [ leading ] men of Galilee. [ When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced ], she pleased Herod and his dinner guests.
The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything [ you want ], and I’ll give it to you.” And he promised her with an oath, “[ Whatever you ask ] I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”
She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?”
“The head of John the Baptist,” she answered.
At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: “I want [ you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter ].”
The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want [ to refuse her ]. So he immediately sent an executioner with orders [ to bring John’s head ]. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. On [ hearing of this ], John’s disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all [ they had done and taught ]. Then, [ because so many people were coming and going { that they did not even have a chance ( to eat ) } ], he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”
So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. But many [ who saw { them leaving } recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. [ When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd ], he had compassion on them, [ because they were like sheep without a shepherd ]. So he began [ teaching them many things ].
By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. Send the people away [ so that they can go to the { surrounding } countryside and villages and buy themselves something { to eat } ].”
But he answered, “You give them something [ to eat ].”
They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages! Are we [ to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them { to eat } ]?”
“How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.”
[ When they found out ], they said, “Five—and two fish.”
Then Jesus directed them [ to have { all the people sit down in groups on the green grass } ]. So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. [ Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven ], he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples [ to distribute to the people ]. He also divided the two fish among them all. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of [ broken ] pieces of bread and fish. The number of the men [ who had eaten ] was five thousand.
Jesus Walks on the Water
Immediately Jesus made [ his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida ], [ while he dismissed the crowd ]. After [ leaving them ], he went up on a mountainside [ to pray ].
Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. He saw [ the disciples straining at the oars ], [ because the wind was against them ]. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, [ walking on the lake ]. He was about to pass by them, but [ when they saw { him walking on the lake } ], they thought [ he was a ghost ]. They cried out, [ because they all saw him and were terrified ].
Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.
[ When they had crossed over ], they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there. [ As soon as they got out of the boat ], people recognized Jesus.
They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to [ { wherever } they heard { he was } ]. And [ wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside ]—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him [ to let { them touch even the edge of his cloak } ], and all [ who touched it ] were healed.

第6章
6:1イエスはそこを去って、郷里に行かれたが、弟子たちも従って行った。 6:2そして、安息日になったので、会堂で教えはじめられた。それを聞いた多くの人々は、驚いて言った、「この人は、これらのことをどこで習ってきたのか。また、この人の授かった知恵はどうだろう。このような力あるわざがその手で行われているのは、どうしてか。 6:3この人は大工ではないか。マリヤのむすこで、ヤコブ、ヨセ、ユダ、シモンの兄弟ではないか。またその姉妹たちも、ここにわたしたちと一緒にいるではないか」。こうして彼らはイエスにつまずいた。 6:4イエスは言われた、「預言者は、自分の郷里、親族、家以外では、どこででも敬われないことはない」。 6:5そして、そこでは力あるわざを一つもすることができず、ただ少数の病人に手をおいていやされただけであった。 6:6そして、彼らの不信仰を驚き怪しまれた。
それからイエスは、附近の村々を巡りあるいて教えられた。 6:7また十二弟子を呼び寄せ、ふたりずつつかわすことにして、彼らにけがれた霊を制する権威を与え、 6:8また旅のために、つえ一本のほかには何も持たないように、パンも、袋も、帯の中に銭も持たず、 6:9ただわらじをはくだけで、下着も二枚は着ないように命じられた。 6:10そして彼らに言われた、「どこへ行っても、家にはいったなら、その土地を去るまでは、そこにとどまっていなさい。 6:11また、あなたがたを迎えず、あなたがたの話を聞きもしない所があったなら、そこから出て行くとき、彼らに対する抗議のしるしに、足の裏のちりを払い落しなさい」。 6:12そこで、彼らは出て行って、悔改めを宣べ伝え、 6:13多くの悪霊を追い出し、大ぜいの病人に油をぬっていやした。
6:14さて、イエスの名が知れわたって、ヘロデ王の耳にはいった。ある人々は「バプテスマのヨハネが、死人の中からよみがえってきたのだ。それで、あのような力が彼のうちに働いているのだ」と言い、 6:15他の人々は「彼はエリヤだ」と言い、また他の人々は「昔の預言者のような預言者だ」と言った。 6:16ところが、ヘロデはこれを聞いて、「わたしが首を切ったあのヨハネがよみがえったのだ」と言った。 6:17このヘロデは、自分の兄弟ピリポの妻ヘロデヤをめとったが、そのことで、人をつかわし、ヨハネを捕えて獄につないだ。 6:18それは、ヨハネがヘロデに、「兄弟の妻をめとるのは、よろしくない」と言ったからである。 6:19そこで、ヘロデヤはヨハネを恨み、彼を殺そうと思っていたが、できないでいた。 6:20それはヘロデが、ヨハネは正しくて聖なる人であることを知って、彼を恐れ、彼に保護を加え、またその教を聞いて非常に悩みながらも、なお喜んで聞いていたからである。 6:21ところが、よい機会がきた。ヘロデは自分の誕生日の祝に、高官や将校やガリラヤの重立った人たちを招いて宴会を催したが、 6:22そこへ、このヘロデヤの娘がはいってきて舞をまい、ヘロデをはじめ列座の人たちを喜ばせた。そこで王はこの少女に「ほしいものはなんでも言いなさい。あなたにあげるから」と言い、 6:23さらに「ほしければ、この国の半分でもあげよう」と誓って言った。 6:24そこで少女は座をはずして、母に「何をお願いしましょうか」と尋ねると、母は「バプテスマのヨハネの首を」と答えた。 6:25するとすぐ、少女は急いで王のところに行って願った、「今すぐに、バプテスマのヨハネの首を盆にのせて、それをいただきとうございます」。 6:26王は非常に困ったが、いったん誓ったのと、また列座の人たちの手前、少女の願いを退けることを好まなかった。 6:27そこで、王はすぐに衛兵をつかわし、ヨハネの首を持って来るように命じた。衛兵は出て行き、獄中でヨハネの首を切り、 6:28盆にのせて持ってきて少女に与え、少女はそれを母にわたした。 6:29ヨハネの弟子たちはこのことを聞き、その死体を引き取りにきて、墓に納めた。
6:30さて、使徒たちはイエスのもとに集まってきて、自分たちがしたことや教えたことを、みな報告した。 6:31するとイエスは彼らに言われた、「さあ、あなたがたは、人を避けて寂しい所へ行って、しばらく休むがよい」。それは、出入りする人が多くて、食事をする暇もなかったからである。 6:32そこで彼らは人を避け、舟に乗って寂しい所へ行った。 6:33ところが、多くの人々は彼らが出かけて行くのを見、それと気づいて、方々の町々からそこへ、一せいに駆けつけ、彼らより先に着いた。 6:34イエスは舟から上がって大ぜいの群衆をごらんになり、飼う者のない羊のようなその有様を深くあわれんで、いろいろと教えはじめられた。 6:35ところが、はや時もおそくなったので、弟子たちはイエスのもとにきて言った、「ここは寂しい所でもあり、もう時もおそくなりました。 6:36みんなを解散させ、めいめいで何か食べる物を買いに、まわりのや村々へ行かせてください」。 6:37イエスは答えて言われた、「あなたがたの手で食物をやりなさい」。弟子たちは言った、「わたしたちが二百デナリものパンを買ってきて、みんなに食べさせるのですか」。 6:38するとイエスは言われた、「パンは幾つあるか。見てきなさい」。彼らは確かめてきて、「五つあります。それに魚が二ひき」と言った。 6:39そこでイエスは、みんなを組々に分けて、青草の上にすわらせるように命じられた。 6:40人々は、あるいは百人ずつ、あるいは五十人ずつ、列をつくってすわった。 6:41それから、イエスは五つのパンと二ひきの魚とを手に取り、天を仰いでそれを祝福し、パンをさき、弟子たちにわたして配らせ、また、二ひきの魚もみんなにお分けになった。 6:42みんなの者は食べて満腹した。 6:43そこで、パンくずや魚の残りを集めると、十二のかごにいっぱいになった。 6:44パンを食べた者は男五千人であった。
6:45それからすぐ、イエスは自分で群衆を解散させておられる間に、しいて弟子たちを舟に乗り込ませ、向こう岸のベツサイダへ先におやりになった。 6:46そして群衆に別れてから、祈るために山へ退かれた。 6:47夕方になったとき、舟は海のまん中に出ており、イエスだけが陸地におられた。 6:48ところが逆風が吹いていたために、弟子たちがこぎ悩んでいるのをごらんになって、夜明けの四時ごろ、海の上を歩いて彼らに近づき、そのそばを通り過ぎようとされた。 6:49彼らはイエスが海の上を歩いておられるのを見て、幽霊だと思い、大声で叫んだ。 6:50みんなの者がそれを見て、おじ恐れたからである。しかし、イエスはすぐ彼らに声をかけ、「しっかりするのだ。わたしである。恐れることはない」と言われた。 6:51そして、彼らの舟に乗り込まれると、風はやんだ。彼らは心の中で、非常に驚いた。 6:52先のパンのことを悟らず、その心が鈍くなっていたからである。
6:53彼らは海を渡り、ゲネサレの地に着いて舟をつないだ。 6:54そして舟からあがると、人々はすぐイエスと知って、 6:55その地方をあまねく駆けめぐり、イエスがおられると聞けば、どこへでも病人を床にのせて運びはじめた。 6:56そして、村でも町でもでも、イエスがはいって行かれる所では、病人たちをその広場におき、せめてその上着のふさにでも、さわらせてやっていただきたいと、お願いした。そしてさわった者は皆いやされた。
