Dali Independence Day is an American national holiday. It occurs on July 4th every year. July 4th is the day of celebration. Even if July 4th is Saturday or Sunday, then Friday or Monday is additional day off, but the celebration is always July 4th.
ダリちゃん 独立記念日はアメリカの祝日で、毎年7月4日なんだ。7月4日はお祝いの日だ。7月4日が土・日に重なると、金曜や月曜が振替休日となるがお祝いは必ず7月4日なんだ。

Dali This is the anniversary of the day that the Second Continental Congress, which was a meeting of delegates from the thirteen colonies in America, approved the Declaration of Independence in 1776. This document declared that we are breaking away from England, are no longer part of England, and are independent from England.
ダリちゃん この日は、アメリカ13州の植民地からの代表からなる第2回大陸会議が1776年にアメリカ独立宣言を採択した記念日だよ。この文書では、英国との決別、もはや英国の一部ではない事、英国からの独立、を宣言しているんだ。

Dali The declaration was made during the American Revolutionary War. Some people refer to it as the War of Independence. Of course, England was against this and the war became fierce. There were many actors in the war. In addition to Americans and English, French, Spanish, Canadians, and even American Indians were involved. The war lasted until 1783.
ダリちゃん この宣言は、アメリカ独立戦争の最中に行われたんだ。「American Revolutionary War」の代わりに「War of Independence」と呼ぶ人もいるけどね。もちろん英国はこれに反対して戦争はより激しさを増した。この戦争では様々な人々が関わったんだ。アメリカ人やイギリス人はもちろん、フランス人やスペイン人、カナダ人、アメリカインディアンまでもが参戦したんだ。戦争は1783年まで続いたんだ。

Dali On this day now, the custom is similar to Memorial Day. It’s a nice hot summer day whereon most people have picnic outside or go to the park to have a barbecue, maybe. Very important on this day is fireworks. Basically, in the US, fireworks are only done on Independence Day. It’s different from the Japanese custom, where fireworks are generally enjoyed at any time and at many different areas in the summer.
ダリちゃん 今のその日に世間がすることはメモリアルデーにする事と似てるね。この暑くて気持ちのいい夏の日に、外でピクニックをしたり、公園でバーベキューをしたりなんかして。この日の一番の重要行事は花火なんだ。基本的にアメリカでは花火大会は独立記念日だけなんだ。日本みたいに夏にはいつでもどこでもって訳ではないんだ。

Dali Also, on Independence Day, some families may buy some small fireworks for children to enjoy in the park. In my childhood, we also did small fireworks every year in front of my house. We lit them with a match and enjoyed sparklers, with children excitingly running around in the dark, screaming.
ダリちゃん また、独立記念日には、子供たちに小さな花火を買ってあげて公園で楽しむ家族もいるね。子供の頃、わしらも、毎年家の前で小さな花火をしたなあ。マッチで花火に火をつけて線香花火を楽しんだ。子供たちは興奮して「キャーキャー」叫びながら暗闇の中を走り回っていたもんだ。

Things that remind us of summer in Japan include summer festivals in shrines, Katori-Senko, Bon-odori, night stalls, firework displays…. In the US, firework displays are said to be held only on July 4th. A little bit sad.
日本の夏の風物詩としては、神社などでの夏祭り、蚊取り線香、盆踊り、夜店、花火大会……。アメリカでは花火大会は7月4日だけなんだって。ちょっと寂しいね。
