Me No! Come on! There are fewer holidays in the US than in Japan. Just 10 holidays in the US, whereas there are 16 in Japan.

Dali I think having so many national holidays is bad for the economy because people don’t work. Economy equals work!

Dali Of course, I’ve heard of this day. It’s a federal holiday. But I have no opinion at all. In fact, I don’t even know when it is. I think most Americans don’t care much about Veterans Day; only veterans and their families care about Veterans Day.
ダリちゃん もちろん、聞いたことはあるさ。連邦祝日だろう。でも別にコメントすることはないね。実際、いつなのかも知らない。ほとんどのアメリカ人はベテランズデーにあまり関心がないと思うよ。退役軍人とその家族だけが気にかけてるんだ。

Me What’s the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day?
私 メモリアルデーとベテランズデーの違いは？
Dali Well, maybe Memorial Day celebrates dead veterans. And Veterans Day celebrates living veterans. I don’t know for sure, but I think that the word, memorial, is related to death. If you ask Americans when Veterans Day is, I think very few will give the correct answer. But if you ask Americans when Memorial Day is, they probably also don’t know the exact date but they know that it’s the beginning of summer. It is widely known that Memorial Day weekend is the start of summer.
ダリちゃん そうだね。たぶんメモリアルデーは亡くなられた退役軍人をお祝いする。で、ベテランズデーは生きてる退役軍人をお祝いする。確信はないけど「メモリアル」と言う言葉は「死」と関連していると思う。もしアメリカ人に「ベテランズデーはいつ？」と尋ねると、正しく答えられる人はほとんどいないと思う。でもアメリカ人に「メモリアルデーはいつ？」と尋ねると、彼らはおそらく正しい日付を知らないだろうけれど、夏の始まりだということは知っていると思う。メモリアルデーウィークエンドは夏の始まりだということはよく知られている。

Dali Well, let me see. My image of Veterans Day is what I saw in a situation comedy. In the sitcom, veterans were gathering together at the Veterans Hall in the city. They were grouped together according to war. One table had only two veterans, who sat next to each other, but weren’t talking to each other. They were extremely old World War II veterans. Another table had some veterans who were not as old. They were Vietnam veterans. And there were a number of tables with many young men. They were veterans of Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria, and many other places. The young guys were drinking, joking, and telling stories about the wars.
ダリちゃん うーん、そうだなあ。わしのベテランズデーのイメージはシチュエーション・コメディーで見たものだ。そのシチュエーション・コメディーでは退役軍人たちが都会の退役軍人会館に集合していた。戦争別にグループに分けられていた。あるテーブルには二人しか退役軍人はいなかった。彼らは隣り合って座ってたが、お話はしていなかった。究極に年老いた第二次世界大戦の退役軍人だったんだ。もう一つのテーブルにはそんなに年老いていない退役軍人たちが幾人かいた。ベトナム戦争の退役軍人だ。で、多くの若者のテーブルがいくつかあった。アフガン戦争、イラク戦争、シリア戦争、その他諸々の戦争の退役軍人たちだった。若者たちは酒を飲んで、冗談を言って、戦争の話をしていたんだ。

Dali Yes. That’s my image of Veterans Day. It’s mainly for the veterans. Only veterans really recognize the day. Non-veterans don’t really pay attention to the day, except to enjoy a day off. By the way, when is Veterans Day?

In the US, there are now so many veterans, especially young veterans because recently the US is involved in so many wars. It has resulted in thousands and thousands of veterans, as well as millions of deaths around the world. With the increasing number of veterans, the importance of Veterans Day has considerably increased, along with the hatred many countries feel towards the war-mongering US.
