Dali Why do the Japanese have different Christmas customs? I have an interesting story about an old Japanese girlfriend. She was a student of a small English language school. She was a very small, pretty girl. She was the same age as me, 25. At that time, I was in Japan less than one year maybe. I didn’t know Japanese Christmas customs. I didn’t know Japanese Christmas habits. It was Christmas Eve. We met together to have a romantic dinner. She gave me a present. It was an expensive Italian necktie, made of silk. I think it cost one man’en. It was the Bubble Era. I still have it. “Oh, it’s very nice, thank you,” I said, but I didn’t have a present for her. After that, she was never interested in seeing me again. Christmas is a Christian holiday. She should know that. How should I know Japanese non-Christian Christmas customs? She was very cold after that, saying, “I am so busy, sorry.” But she should understand my situation. She should forgive me. In Christian countries, Christmas is spent with the family to have ham, turkey, or lasagna…She must realize this!
ダリちゃん わしは、なんで日本には変わったクリスマスの習慣があるのかなあ。昔の彼女の興味深い話があるんだ。彼女は小規模な英会話スクールの生徒で、とってもちっちゃくって、可愛くってね。わしと同じ25歳だった。わしはその当時日本に来て1年も経っていなかったと思う。わしは、日本のクリスマスの風習について知らなかった。日本のクリスマスの習慣について何も知らなかった。それはクリスマスイブのことだった。わしらは、ロマンティックなディナーを食べに二人で会った。彼女は、わしにプレゼントをくれた。イタリア製で高級なシルクのネクタイだった。一万円したんじゃないかな。バブル時代だったんだよね。今でも持っているよ。わしは「オー、すご～く素敵。ありがとう」と言ったものの、わしは彼女にプレゼントを用意してなかった。それからというもの彼女は、わしにもう一度会おうとはしなかった。クリスマスはキリスト教徒の休日なのに、彼女はそのことを理解していない！ どうして日本に来たばっかりのわしが、日本の（キリスト教徒でない）クリスマスの習慣が理解できるの？ それ以来、彼女はとても冷たくなった。わしが誘っても、「ごめんなさい、今日はとても忙しいの」ってあしらわれて。彼女は、わしの事情を理解すべきだ！ わしを許すべきだ！ キリスト教徒の国では、クリスマスには家族と一緒に「ハム」や七面鳥やラザニアを食べて過ごすのに……彼女は理解するべきだ！

For Dali who was born into a devout Catholic family, Christmas had a special meaning. He still knows the Apostles’ Creed by heart.
