Dali Thanksgiving Day is a very important day for Americans, but not for Europeans. I heard that it’s also important for Canadians. For Americans this holiday anticipates Christmas. The date always changes, but it’s a very simple rule: the 4th Thursday in November. Thanksgiving activities are very boring, consisting mainly of eating a big dinner. Turkey, yes—almost every family has turkey. During this season, every supermarket has many frozen turkeys, but before and after Thanksgiving, there are few turkeys in supermarkets. Turkey is slow-cooked in the oven for many hours. In my family we had one turkey and one ham; it’s hard to explain why. Preparation for Thanksgiving dinner starts in the morning. Later, in the late afternoon, dinner is ready. Grandmother always came to visit on Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday, but many workplaces also allow the next day of Friday as a holiday, so everybody is happy about the four-day vacation.
ダリちゃん 感謝祭はアメリカ人にとって、とっても大切。ヨーロッパでは違うけど。おそらく、カナダ人にとっても重要と聞いたことがある。アメリカ人にとっては、来るクリスマスを予感する日だ。感謝祭の日は毎年変わるんだけど、簡単なルールで決められていて、つまり11月の第4木曜日さ。感謝祭はとても退屈な日で、ただ御馳走を食べるだけ。七面鳥、そうそう、ほとんどどの家庭でも七面鳥を食べるんだ。どこのスーパーでも、冷凍の七面鳥を置くようになる。感謝祭シーズン以外は、どこにもまず売ってないけどね。七面鳥は長い時間かけてオーブンでゆっくり調理するんだ。わしの家では、一羽の七面鳥と一塊のハム。なぜこの組み合わせかはわからないが。感謝祭のディナー作りは朝から始まり、午後遅くにやっと出来上がる。感謝祭の日には、いつもわしの祖母が来てたなあ。この日は祝日だが多くの会社はその日の翌日、つまり金曜日も休みになっている。それで、みんな4日間の休暇を楽しむんだ。

Dali It’s very unusual to travel. Except, perhaps, to a family member’s house. It’s very untraditional to eat out, but some people do eat out. My brother and his wife are very strange people, so they eat out. When Thanksgiving Day is finished, it’s not sad because Christmas season starts the day after Thanksgiving.
ダリちゃん とても珍しいね。たぶん、親類の家に行くことはあるかもしれないけど。伝統的に外食することも稀だね。そんな人もいるかも知れないけど。わしの兄夫婦は、かなり変だから外に食べに行くみたいだけど。感謝祭が終わっても寂しくはないよ。だって感謝祭の次の日からクリスマスシーズンが始まるんだもの。

Dali There is another custom on Thanksgiving Day which is very popular in the U.S. That is television football. Usually football is not watched by the whole family, but watched maybe by father and son(s). There is another Thanksgiving television custom. It’s a televised parade in New York City. It is televised to the entire country and it might start at about 9 o’clock. Many families turn on the television but nobody watches the parade; the parade is just “background music.” Before the Thanksgiving dinner, around the house there are bowls of snacks, but the snacks are limited to nuts. These are very symbolic of the autumn season. These nuts are in the shell. Part of the custom of eating the nuts is to have to break each open individually with a nutcracker. It takes effort. Also, it kind of ruins the appetite. It heralds the beginning of the holiday season.
ダリちゃん 感謝祭のもうひとつの習慣で、アメリカの家族では有名なことなんだけど、テレビでフットボールの試合をやっているね。大概、家族全員で見るというよりは、父親と息子がフットボールの試合をテレビで観戦したりなんかしてね。もうひとつ、感謝祭でのテレビの習慣がある。ニューヨーク市のパレードがテレビで放映される。全米で放映されて、多分午前9時頃から。どこの家庭でもパレードのテレビをつけているが、じっと見ているのではなくてバックグラウンドでかけているの。感謝祭のディナーの前には、家じゅうにスナックのボールがあって、でも中身はナッツに限る。とても秋を象徴しているだろう？ ナッツは必ず殻付きでなければならない。これも一つの習慣だが、自分で殻を割らなければいけない。手間がかかるけどね。でもそうしているうちに食べる気が失せてくるんだ。そんなこんなで休暇シーズンの始まりだ。
