Tanabata festival &Makizushi making event for US Univ. students

After cooking demonstration explained by both Japanese & English, students challenged

                                 

making rose sushi roll and Inarizusi.  Inarizushi is a sushi rice pouch mixed with sesame, pickled ginger etc.

Oage, pouch used for Inarizushi is made from fried thin slice of tofu( soy bean curd).

 

  Inari is familiar with Inari jinjya shrine.

the shirine that foxes are placed as guardian deity and answer for the rich harvest and cultivation

People offer oage to Inari shrine which is fox favorite food.

 

Rose sushi roll is named after the rose flower pattern appeared on section in slicing one roll that is beautiful !

Japanese cuisines are good to see and good to taste. Such rolled sushi originated from the local speciality cuisine for festival in the province of Chiba.

 

July 7th is Tanbata festival comes from old Chinese legend of such a. romantic story that Orihime (Weiver pricess) and young cowherd are permitted to meet over the milky way once a year on Tanbata night.  They are Identified as Vega and Altair In constellation 

Tanabata (七夕) bamboo decoration was displayed in the cooking room.

The students wrote their wishes and prayers on strips of paper(tanzaku). We place this bamboo decoration outside on Tanabata  eve.

 

May students' wishes  be answered !!

This was such a wonderful event for our students. They learned a lot about making sushi, and had the opportunity to learn a little bit about Tanabata as well. We are already looking forward to our next event with your group. Thanks again!
