Sharapova shuts the book on burn-out claims
By Mark Hodgkinson in Miami
(Filed: 24/03/2005)
It can be safely assumed that Maria Sharapova will not be
buying a copy of Serena Williams's new book, a collection
of stories to help teenage girls through their problems of
self-esteem, lack of positive role models and dating boys.
And not just because of the increasingly uneasy atmosphere
between them.
Sharapova patently has no need for such self-help literature.
She hardly looked like a young woman in crisis yesterday,
dismissing the recent rumours that her wire-thin body is
approaching burn-out. Sharapova was in poised, confident
mood, just slightly amused and bemused by what she sees as
'the controversy that never was'.
Russia's 17-year-old Wimbledon champion has always been
fairly open and honest about her ambitions to reach the top
of the world rankings, and she said that she was happy with
how she was pacing herself. There were suggestions that
the world No 3 should withdraw from the Nasdaq-100 Open,
but she did not see why she should have to downsize her
schedule.
She implied that too much was being read into what happened
in the Californian desert at the weekend, when Lindsay
Davenport inflicted the first 'double bagel', or 6-0, 6-0
defeat, of her career in the semi-finals of Indian Wells.
Sharapova did not play her usual bubblegum tennis, lacking
in energy and teen spirit as she lasted just 49 minutes
on court.
"I think being tired is just part of our sport - I'm not
going to be fresh the whole time," Sharapova said.
"I've accepted that loss and I know that I'm not going
to play my best tennis all the time. It was just one
of those days when I couldn't find a way to fight on
the court. I think people have to realise that I can't
win every single match."
It was a bad result in Indian Wells, but the occasional
helter-skelter match is to be expected from a teenager
who has achieved so much at such an extraordinary rate.
She also won the year-end championships in Los Angeles
last season, and her only other defeat this season was
to Williams in the semi-finals of the Australian Open.
Sharapova has no major technical flaws in her game,
is working on improving her strength and stamina, and
it is probably now a question of when she becomes the
world No 1, rather than if. The title here would keep
the ranking points ticking over, and add to a celebrity
that she seems to be enjoying more than ever.
She launches her own perfume range later in the year,
"a light and flowery scent that you can wear all day",
and regularly receives letters from her own idols.
"I'm getting letters from people who I didn't even
think knew who I was. These are people who I have
admired, and now they admire me, people like the
British fashion designer Stella McCartney," Sharapova said.
Williams, who grew irritated on a recent conference
call when she was asked whether she considered Sharapova
a rival, is after a fourth successive title in Miami.
The American lives an hour from the venue, and considers
this her home event. "I'm a hometown girl," she said.
"I just love playing tennis in Miami. My attitude changes
any time I get down here."
