Ossu! Shugeibu
The super cool and macho guerilla crafting club from Japan
Coming to gallery hanahou this October!
Inspiring men (and tomboy women) all over the world to go crazy with a sewing needle and fabric is Ossu! Shugeibu, translated into English as Yo! Crafting Club.
Ossu! Shugeibu is fueled by a mix of testosterone and pure creativity uninhibited by rules or conventions. Using repurposed materials and freestyle techniques, founder and president Shoichi Ishizawa inspires his myriad club members--men and women who have participated in his workshops--to create surprising craft art without any prior experience in the traditional crafts. Their projects have included a cuddly receptacle "trash bear," a robotic stuffed dog, no-sew stuffed animals, and oodles of other unusual creations.
Ishizawa and his female partner in craft, Makiko Miyata, shun rules but live and craft by this philosophy:
- Don't over-think it
- Don't plan it
- Don't use a pattern
- Don't measure
- Don't use pins
- Don't have perfect stitches
- Don't compare projects
This October, Ossu! Shugeibu will take over gallery hanahou with an exhibit of infectious creativity! They will also be recruiting new members with a workshop of hand-sewn walking and talking stuffed dogs. Mark your calendars for the opening of their show on October 14th and workshops on October 17th!
