Phrasal Verb 41 - TAKE UP - English Vocabulary

Today's phrasal verb is ‘take up’.

We are working on building vocabulary, which is the most important thing you can do to become more fluent in English. We're focusing on the most frequently used phrasal verbs and their most commonly used meanings. Today's phrasal verb, ‘take up’, is one of those phrasal verbs with multiple meanings.

Today we’re looking at the top three.

Number one. ‘Take up’ is used most often to mean:

to occupy a certain amount of space or time.

For example:

• This couch is going to take up too much space in this room, or
• I know you're really busy, I don't want to take up too much of your time.

Secondly, we can use ‘take up’ to mean:

to deal with a problem or an issue.

For example:

• World governments need to take up the issue of climate change and find a solution.

And thirdly, we use take up when:

We begin doing or practicing a new hobby or a new job. For example:

• I decided to take up painting as a new hobby.
• She will take up the position of CEO next month.
