WHEN or WHENEVER?- Confusing English Words #shorts

WHEN and WHENEVER are not interchangeable. They have slightly different meanings. Learn how to use these two words correctly. Hi folks, Charlie here! Today, I want to talk about the two words "when" and "whenever." Let's see if we can figure out how to use them correctly. If it's a unique event that happens one time or you know the date or time, then we use "when." Here's an example: • The fireworks will go off when the clock strikes midnight. • When I was a kid, I used to believe in magic. It's best to use "whenever" when an event is repeated so it happens over and over, or we don't know the time or date. Here are some examples: • Whenever I get in the shower, the doorbell rings. • I'll help you with your English studies whenever you get serious about learning. We can say, "When I get in the shower, the doorbell rings." But it's better to use "whenever" to give the idea that it happens every time. It's also okay to say, "I'll help you with your English studies when you get serious about learning." But it is better to use "whenever" to convey the meaning of "at whatever time you get serious." I hope that helps. Thanks for watching. PREVENT or AVOID?- Confusing English Words #shorts
Do "prevent" and "avoid" have the same meaning? Hi folks, Charlie here. Today, I want to talk about "prevent" and "avoid". We use them both to talk about something not happening, right? But they do have slightly different meanings. Now, "prevent" means to stop something from happening or to stop someone from doing something. For example: • Wearing a seatbelt can prevent serious injuries in a car accident. • Vaccinations can prevent the spread of diseases. • To prevent stomach problems, I don't eat pizza. "Avoid" means to stay away from a person, a place, or a situation. Here are a couple of examples: • Pizza makes my stomach hurt, so I avoid eating it. • You should wear sunscreen to avoid getting sunburned. • After we had a fight, my sister's been avoiding me. So basically, "avoid" is staying away from something or someone that you don't like or you don't want. "Prevent" is to take action to keep someone from doing something or keep something from happening. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching. 1st or 2nd Conditional?- Confusing English Grammar #shorts

1st or 2nd Conditional?- Confusing English Grammar #shorts

What is the difference between the first and the second conditionals? We use the first conditional when something is possible; it could really happen. It's my point of view. Here's an example: "If I have time tonight, I will go to the gym." Here, I'm saying I think I'm going to have time to go to the gym tonight. We use the second conditional when something is unlikely to happen or impossible. Again, this is your opinion. It's subjective. Here's an example: "If I had time tonight, I would go to the gym." Here, I don't really think that I'm going to have time to go to the gym tonight. Thanks for watching. HOWEVER vs. WHEREAS?- Confusing English Words #shorts

'however' and 'whereas' are not interchangeable. Follow these general rules in order to avoid grammar mistakes Today, I want to talk about two linking words: “however” and “whereas”. “However” and “whereas” are both words that are used to contrast or compare two ideas or statements, but we use them in slightly different ways. We use "however" as an adverb when we're about to say something that is surprising compared to what you've just said. For example: • I thought the movie would be boring. However, I ended up enjoying it. In this example, we're using "however" to introduce a contrast between the speaker's first expectation and the actual outcome. Now, "whereas" is used to compare two contrasting ideas or statements. Here's an example: • I like to read nonfiction, whereas my wife prefers fiction. Here's another example to illustrate the difference between the two: • I love the beach; however, I hate getting all sandy. • I love the beach, whereas my wife prefers the mountains. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching. ADVICE or ADVISE?- Confusing English Words #shorts

Is it ADVICE or ADVISE? Learn how to use these English words correctly. Today, I want to talk about “advice” and “advise”. Now, as you can hear, they sound pretty similar and they look very similar. So, they can be easily confused. But, they do have different meanings. “Advice” is a suggestion about what you think someone should do or how they should do it. For example: • My friend gave me good advice on how to prepare for the job interview. • I need some advice on how to train my dog. • She took your advice and went home early. “Advise” is a verb that means to suggest or recommend something to someone. If you advise someone, you make a suggestion about what you think someone should do or how they should do it. Here are a few examples: • Can you advise me on which phone to buy? • I would advise you to study for the test in advance. • His doctor advised him to take time off work. So basically, if you advise someone, you are giving them advice. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
