DURING or FOR? Use them correctly in English

What's wrong with this sentence? 

 • I sit in front of a screen during 8 hours a day.

The answer is the preposition "during". The correct sentence would be: 

 • I sit in front of a screen for 8 hours a day.

Today, we're looking at the difference between "during" and "for" and how to use them correctly when we're talking about time.

We use "during" plus a noun to talk about when something happened. Here are a few example sentences:

 • Everybody fell asleep during the presentation. (Notice "the presentation," a thing, a noun.)

 • We get so much rain here during the winter.

 • Her phone kept ringing during the movie.

We use "for" with a period of time to talk about how long something goes on. For example:

 • We waited at the coffee shop for 30 minutes. (Notice "for" with that period of time, 30 minutes.)

 • She's been living in the city for a long time.

 • They'll be on vacation for two weeks.

 •

SAY vs. TELL - Grammar - What's the difference? 

What's the difference between "say" and "tell"? They both mean that you are expressing something using your words, but we use them in slightly different ways. The key point is that you say something, but you tell someone something.

What does that mean? That means that if you use the verb "say," you don't have to specify who you're saying it to. If you use the verb "tell," you do have to specify who you are telling. Here are a couple of examples:

 • I said, "I love chocolate." Or 

 • I told her, "I love chocolate."

 • She said, "She would be here at five o'clock." Or 

 • she told me, "She would be here at five o'clock."

Remember, there are exceptions, though. There are some phrases that use "tell" without specifying who you're telling. Here are just a few examples of those phrases:

 • He tells great stories.

 • He tells really bad jokes.

 • She always tells the truth.
