先日、たまたま日経新聞を読んでいたら、その文化面に、たぶん五月三日の記事だったと思うけれど、河鍋暁斎の「地獄太夫と一休」の絵について、どこかの学芸員による解説コラムが掲載されていた。
When I read Nikkei Shimbun by chance the other day, The hell tayu and Ikkyu zennzi" the picture of the Gyosai Cawanabe took a rest and had been published the explanation column of that picture by the museum somewhere attendant though thought that it was an article May 3 maybe on the cultural column.
一休禅師は室町時代の僧侶であるが、河鍋暁斎は幕末から明治にかけての画家である。
Gyosai Cawanabe is a painter who lives at the end of shogunate to the Meiji era though Ikkyu zennzi is a priest in the Muromachi age.
江戸、明治期の画家が、室町の一休宗純と遊女の地獄太夫を題材に絵を描いている。
the painter of Edo and the Meiji era period are drawing the picture in the theme " Ikkyu zennzi (priest) and Jigoku-Tayu(hell- prostitute)" they lived at Muromachi era .
そのコラムの解説によると、地獄太夫という女性は、もともと高貴な家の――武家の生まれであったが、悲運にも泉州堺の遊郭に身を落とすことになった。
according to the explanation of the column,──An originally noble house of the woman named the Jigoku-Tayu seems to be a samurai family. though it was a birth,The misfortune will also degrade herself to the licensed(prostitute) quarters in SemShu Sakai(south Osaka)

It is said that it is kidnapped, and it was sold instead of the ransom.
江戸時代のみならず先の戦前までは、日本には遊郭は存在したし、戦争ではそうした女性は慰安婦と呼ばれたりもしていた。

一休はそうした彼女を、「五尺の身体を売って衆生の煩悩を安んじる汝は邪禅賊僧にまさる」と言って慰めたそうだ。
I hear that she is said, "to evil passion of the all men contented ,Thine who prostitutes the body of 1.5 meters is superior to Zen dishonest Zocsou(evil Buddhist)" and saying so, Ikkyu-Zennzi comforted her.
しかし、一休は現実に彼女を解放することはできなかった。
However, Ikkyu -Zenzi was not able to liberate her to reality.
そんな言葉だけの慰めが何になる。
The comfort only of such a word becomes what for.
遊女の隣にあって、一休和尚が骸骨の上で踊っている姿は、すべての人間の真実の姿である。
In the next of the prostitute , the appearance that Ikkyu-ZennZI is taking a dancing on the skeleton is appearance of all man's truth.
骸骨が、肉と皮を着て、酒を食らい宴会で踊っている。
The skeleton dances drinking sake in the eating feast ,putting on meat and the skin.
仏教ではこんな人間界を娑婆とも呼んでいる。
