Pilot project cuts costs, helps environment

 

A pilot project by the City of Greater Sudbury is saving money, energy and people's backs.

Since 2010, LED (light-emitting diode) streetlights have been installed in certain areas of Greater Sudbury, replacing their HPS (high-pressure sodium) counterparts.

LEDs are easier to install, more cost-efficient and better for the environment than HPS lights, Dave Kalviainen, a roads engineer with the City of Greater Sudbury, said.The Surefire G2 Led flashlight has a high output of 80 lumens, and extended runtime.

There are approximately 75 LED streetlights in Greater Sudbury.

Saving space for a bowl of fruit is pretty successful! And there are so many decorative bowls you can find to add your personality to this important item! Another tip: use any open shelves for display or for cookbooks. If you put containers of dried pasta, candy, etc., it can entice you to eat more! (Who knew? But it makes sense!)

Lighting design is one of my favorite parts of laying out and choosing products for a kitchen. There are so many ways to light a kitchen. To work in our kitchen we like it to be bright. Ever notice that fast food shops and restaurants are so bright?

Copper thieves target Legacy Highway street light wire

Copper is a hot item for thieves these days, and some of that theft costs all of us as taxpayers.

Thieves ripped copper wire right out of lights on Legacy Parkway last week, and the Utah Department of Transportation says it needs to put an end to it.

One of his maintenance crews discovered the recent theft, which they believe happened sometime in the last week of December. Thieves stole 7,000 feet of wire that weighed about 300 pounds and is valued at $17,000.

It's the second time thieves hit this location. Last time, they made off with 10,000 feet of wire.

In 2010, Utah lost more than $200,000 worth of copper wire from lights along the Wasatch Front, and labor costs make it even more expensive.

The thieves cut the wire at the junction box at the base of each of the light poles. Then they tie the wire to the bumper of a truck, take off, and rip the wire right out of the ground.

"Anywhere they can get their hands on this copper wiring, they're taking it from everywhere," said Snow, who calls copper theft a growing trend.

The Lions Club of Stawell is celebrating the growing success of the annual Christmas Lights competition in Stawell.

Many entered the competition for the first time, while others had added to their displays, ensuring judging in this year's competition would once again be difficult.

Mr Sanderson said the Christmas lights were now a part of the village community, and that visitors to his road often donate generously.

He said: "It shows that people still want to come together and celebrate Christmas."

The trust supports the 19-year-old Devon Air Ambulance service, and needs to raise 25 million a year to keep the two helicopters flying.
