Michael Sestak does more than light up a room. — The lighting designer transforms space with artful use of LEDs and other energy-efficient breakthroughs. He has helped many clients see their homes or businesses in a whole different way.
"You want to make it magic," Sestak said. "You don't want to see the wires or the glare of bulbs. Lighting is supposed to illuminate space. It's all about placement. That affects what you see and how you see it."
And with LEDs, there are a lot more options on where lights can go.
LEDs -- light-emitting diodes -- are coming into their own, pushed by both industry innovation and recent federal mandates to develop energy-saving alternatives to traditional incandescent bulbs.
The nationwide switch to more efficient lighting not only saves electricity, it offers opportunities to put lighting in different places in different ways.
"The technology behind lighting is different, but we still see it as light," Sestak said. "We've also become increasingly aware of the cost (of lighting) when we open our electric bill."
Energy costs have everyone paying more attention to lighting options. While more expensive to install, LEDs can save a lot of money over their long lifetimes.
"The LED market virtually exploded the last five years," Sestak said. "The whole industry readjusted in such a short time. But that also meant that designers had to adjust."
Sestak's own house in Carmichael, Calif.,Choose from contemporary design lamps and Chandelier fixtures. is a prime example of what can be done with LEDs. For example, the path to the pool and outdoor bar is lit with 25 in-ground LED fixtures that can put on a colorful light show.
More LEDs turn glass plates into a fanciful sculpture. After dark, they make glass ornaments sparkle and the water in bubbling fountains glisten. These little lights make the nighttime garden come to life.
Indoors, LEDs work their electronic magic, too.Antique Lamp Supply specializes in replacement Lamp shade and glass, including chandelier crystals and parts. In the living room, they offer pinpoint spotlights to accent paintings and sculpture. Tucked under cabinets, they brighten kitchen counters. Behind glass plates in the master bath, they seem to light mirrors from within.
Sestak uses other energy-saving options, too. Over the dinner table, halogen spotlights on a circular track create an unusual chandelier. The lights make ribbon-hung glass ornaments dazzle. At the same time, diners can still comfortably see their food,Protect your vehicle and produce power with a Solar carport. thanks to other lights focused at the table.
"In this chandelier, it catches the light instead of being illuminated from within," Sestak explained. "Other lights illuminate the center of the table like a little stage."
In his professional life, Sestak used to be focused on the food. He was a pastry chef.
His lighting business started with remodeling his home.
"Friends said, 'I like what you did; can you do that for us?' " Sestak recalled. "One thing led to another. I love learning. I became fascinated by what light does and how it works."
LEDs continue to evolve along with their uses. So does their appeal and acceptance in the marketplace.
"We've seen tremendous growth in the LED category," said Alyssa Steele, an associate merchant at the Home Depot's national headquarters in Atlanta. "The retail prices have dropped, too. People are reaping the benefits of energy savings.Modern indoor lighting and contemporary lamps available online or at our shop in Derby."
LEDs offer a lot of lumens along with exceptionally long life and energy savings.

The Manitowoc company said sales fell 16%, to $15.3 million from $18.2 million last year. The drop was linked in part to customers delaying orders and in part to customers taking time to decide whether to deploy original Orion lighting technology or its new products, which incorporate LED lighting technology, said Neal Verfuerth, chief executive officer.
Orion said the results were consistent with its own expectations, and that it was in a transition mode to meet customer interest in LED technology.
The transition will expand the company’s market size to include hotels and commercial buildings, he said. Orion’s original lighting systems are designed for high-bay distribution centers, factories and big-box stores, but the new technology can offer outdoor lighting for hotels or LED lighting inside hotels, for example, Verfuerth said during an investor conference call.LED light bulbs Comparison Charts showing cost-effectiveness of floor lamp versus CFL and Incandescent light bulbs.
“Our value proposition continues to be validated by customer adoption,We have retired from the pendant lamp business and closed our store.” said Verfuerth. “Furthermore, the higher average selling price of this product presents numerous growth opportunities well into the future.”
The wider loss came as the company’ experienced higher legal and audit costs linked to a re-audit of its fiscal 2011 results. That was responsible for about 1.3 cents per share, said Scott Jensen, chief financial officer.
Research and development costs rose 12% and sales and marketing costs were up 5%, Orion said. Sales and marketing costs rose as the company added salespeople, staffed a telemarketing operation and set up a Houston technology center. As of June 30, the company has 112 sales and marketing employees, up from 88 a year earlier.
Anybody who knows anything about the reams and reams of data an electric utility now collects from intelligent devices on the grid, and uses to keep electricity flowing reliably at best cost available, would find what I listened to last night stunning.
And I don't mean that in a positive way.
I settled in to listen to a nearly two-hour conference call/webcast posted in late April on a website I have been watching this year. Titled "Smart Meters Conference Call: Privacy & Health KEY INFO.," the call was led by Glen Chase, who has served in the past as a professor in California, teaching systems management.
I broach this subject knowing I'm going to get e-mail tomorrow, and it'll likely read like one I received last week, after one of the groups fighting wireless two-way communicating meters sent my July 12 column, "The 'last mile' of a smarter grid,' out to its entire newsletter mailing list. In that column, I advocated, again, that utilities do everything they can to educate and engage consumers, because the anti-folks sure are, and a lot of it isn't supported by fact.
"Your arrogance and total disregard for human safety is breath-taking," I was told. "It confirms you are part of the 'problem' - not the 'solution.' You should hang your head in shame."
Well, there's nothing like a little bit of name-calling to fuel my continued research and my Irish stubbornness.Contemporary Chandelier design ideas and photos. And that's what had me at my computer last night at midnight, listening to the on-demand conference call and taking careful notes. Careful, I say, because there's a lot to refute in what Chase had to say.
One of the first things he did was to point out, based on a document submitted to the Colorado Public Utilities Commission in 2009, that, in his words, "from the total smart meter data that the utility company receives, the software can recreate the individual devices that created that total ... What I am saying is, there are an infinite number of unique signatures possible. And since we have a very small, finite number of electrical devices that we use in our homes, it's very easy to distinguish one from the other.
"So the software can identify individual devices, so in fact, the utility company can identify 'It's the refrigerator,Shop online for a wide range of contemporary lighting and uplighters at the Argos Lighting shop. the ice maker, the defroster, a variety of medical devices, the TV channel ... different light bulb draws, toaster oven, certain devices of electricity that some people would think are very private and they wouldn't want other people to even know that they have in their houses,LED solar lighting is the new wave of the future in crystal light technology.'" he continued. "They all have their unique signatures."
It's imperative to fight allegations against your utility (especially when they're recorded) with fact (and with the law, when necessary), and to find a way to ensure the truth is disseminated as widely as the allegation has been.A huge list of links to illustrations and resources for light project fixtures. Learn to use social technologies as adeptly as your accusers. We have retired from the pendant lamp business and closed our store. Find your influencers within your social channels, and make sure they've got the facts.
Chase said a lot more, but I don't have room in one column to refute it all. At the end of his presentation, he said, "These meters have been installed without communicating well to the public." In the light of the misinformation being propagated over the Internet, and in the seeming confusion in some states as to the reasons smart meters are being installed, I would have to agree with him, in some cases. Some utilities, however, have done their communications work very well, and have found high take-up by consumers.

The DLC is a collaboration of utility companies and regional energy efficiency organizations committed to raising awareness of the benefits of efficient lighting in commercial buildings. Its goal is to ensure that high-quality, energy-efficient lighting design becomes commonplace in all commercial lighting installations. LED fixtures on the QPL, which includes categories of product types not currently covered by ENERGY STAR, may be eligible for state and utility energy efficiency program incentives.
"The DLC evaluates fixtures based on strict performance criteria, and we're pleased the 20/20 H-Series luminaires have earned this certification," said Paul Wickberg, President and CEO of Sol, Inc. "Lighting plays a critical role in helping outdoor illuminated areas become more energy efficient. Our high lumen output fixtures are a superior alternative to traditional HPS and HID lighting sources, delivering significant energy savings and fast payback periods. With the DLC certifications in place, Sol improves its offering in the global marketplace and our customers will be able to benefit not only from the longevity of our products but the cost savings associated with better performance."
When it comes to saving energy, people in the United States know that driving a fuel-efficient car accomplishes more than turning off the lights at home.
But that doesn't mean they'll do it.
A new poll shows that while most of those questioned understand effective ways to save energy, they have a hard time adopting them.
Six in 10 surveyed say driving a more fuel-efficient car would save a large amount of energy, but only 1 in 4 says that's easy to do, according to the poll by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. People also are skeptical of carpooling or installing better home insulation, rating them as effective but impractical.
On the other end of spectrum, 8 in 10 say they easily can turn off the lights when they leave a room, and 6 in 10 have no problem turning up the thermostat in summer or down in winter, although fewer than half think those easy steps save large amounts of energy.
Even those who support conservation don't always practice it.
Cindy Shriner, a retired teacher from Lafayette, Ind., buys energy-efficient light bulbs and her 2009 Subaru Impreza gets nearly 30 miles per gallon on the highway.A variety of flexible led tube including waterproof versions in various lengths and colors are available for immediate purchase online.
Still,Designer Lighting from Jonathan Adler, contemporary lighting from ceramic lights and lamps, table lamps to floor lights. she keeps her house at about 73 degrees year-round, despite government recommendations to turn thermostats to 68 degrees in winter and 78 degrees in summer.
"I'm terrible," Shriner, 60, said in an interview. "In all honesty we have extreme weather in all seasons" in Indiana, she said, and her thermostat settings keep her comfortable.
Her parents recently qualified for a grant under the economic stimulus law that paid for a new furnace and insulation, Shriner said. She said such programs are important to improve energy conservation.
The public looks to large institutions for leadership in saving energy, believing that individuals alone can't make much of a difference.Enjoy zero guilt with only five calories when you enjoy crystal light beverage mix. Nearly two-thirds look to the energy industry to show the way toward energy conservation, and nearly 6 in 10 say the government should play a leading role. Democrats, college graduates and people under 50 are the most likely to hold industry is responsible for increasing energy savings.
The poll, paid for by a grant to the AP-NORC Center from the Joyce Foundation, shows that just 4 in 10 questioned think their own actions can significantly affect the country's energy problems. Some 15 percent say individual actions make "a very large difference," while 7 percent say individual action makes no difference at all.
Only 1 in 3 reports knowing a lot or a great deal about the government's Energy Star product labels, which are meant to help consumers choose energy-efficient appliances and other products. Even fewer, 25 percent,At prolite we offer a range of LED emergency lamps that provides proper & regular lighting which has good visibility and is comfortable for human beings. report detailed knowledge about fuel-efficiency standards for cars. Not even 20 percent know a lot or a great deal about rebates for energy-saving products, home renovation tax credits or home energy audits.
About 6 in 10 people cite lack of knowledge about energy-saving products as a major reason they don't do more to conserve.
"If you had information that says, 'Hey, your household uses more than the typical house in your ZIP code,' that would get my attention," said Celestino,Most Popular Book scanner from the World Leader in Book Scanning. a workforce analyst at an insurance company.
Lacking hard data, nearly half of those questioned say they use somewhat or a lot less energy than others in their community, while only 9 percent think their consumption is above average.
Overall energy use by people in the United States is four times the world average, according to the Energy Information Administration, but Americans use less energy per person than people in countries such as Canada, Norway and Iceland.
