Matthew 4

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness [ to be tempted by the devil ]. After [ fasting forty days and forty nights ], he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “[ If you are the Son of God ], tell these stones [ to become bread ].”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word [ that comes from the mouth of God ].’”

Then the devil took him to the holy city and had [ him stand on the highest point of the temple ]. “[ If you are the Son of God ],” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels [ concerning you ],
    and they will lift you up in their hands,
    [ so that you will not strike your foot against a stone ].’”

Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “[ if you will bow down and worship me ].”

Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”

Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

Jesus Begins [ to Preach ]

[ When Jesus heard { that John had been put in prison } ], he withdrew to Galilee. [ Leaving Nazareth ], he went and lived in Capernaum, [ which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali ]— [ to fulfill { what was said through the prophet Isaiah } ]:

“Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
    the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,
    Galilee of the Gentiles—
the people [ living in darkness ]
    have seen a great light;
on those [ living in the land of the shadow of death ]
    a light has dawned.”

From that time on Jesus began [ to preach ], “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

Jesus Calls His First Disciples

[ As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee ], he saw two brothers, Simon [ called Peter ] and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out [ to fish for people ].” At once they left their nets and followed him.

[ Going on from there ], he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, [ preparing their nets ]. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Jesus Heals the Sick

Jesus went throughout Galilee, [ teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people ]. News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all [ who were ill with various diseases ], those [ suffering severe pain ], the demon-[ possessed ], those [ having seizures ], and the [ paralyzed ]; and he healed them. Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.

4:1さて、イエスは御霊によって荒野に導かれた。悪魔に試みられるためである。 4:2そして、四十日四十夜、断食をし、そののち空腹になられた。 4:3すると試みる者がきて言った、「もしあなたが神の子であるなら、これらの石がパンになるように命じてごらんなさい」。 4:4イエスは答えて言われた、「『人はパンだけで生きるものではなく、神の口から出る一つ一つの言で生きるものである』と書いてある」。 4:5それから悪魔は、イエスを聖なる都に連れて行き、宮の頂上に立たせて 4:6言った、「もしあなたが神の子であるなら、下へ飛びおりてごらんなさい。

『神はあなたのために御使たちにお命じになると、
あなたの足が石に打ちつけられないように、
彼らはあなたを手でささえるであろう』

と書いてありますから」。 4:7イエスは彼に言われた、「『主なるあなたの神を試みてはならない』とまた書いてある」。 4:8次に悪魔は、イエスを非常に高い山に連れて行き、この世のすべての国々とその栄華とを見せて 4:9言った、「もしあなたが、ひれ伏してわたしを拝むなら、これらのものを皆あなたにあげましょう」。 4:10するとイエスは彼に言われた、「サタンよ、退け。『主なるあなたの神を拝し、ただ神にのみ仕えよ』と書いてある」。 4:11そこで、悪魔はイエスを離れ去り、そして、御使たちがみもとにきて仕えた。

4:12さて、イエスはヨハネが捕えられたと聞いて、ガリラヤへ退かれた。 4:13そしてナザレを去り、ゼブルンとナフタリとの地方にある海べの町カペナウムに行って住まわれた。 4:14これは預言者イザヤによって言われた言が、成就するためである。

4:15「ゼブルンの地、ナフタリの地、
海に沿う地方、ヨルダンの向こうの地、
異邦人のガリラヤ、
4:16暗黒の中に住んでいる民は大いなる光を見、
死の地、死の陰に住んでいる人々に、光がのぼった」。
4:17この時からイエスは教を宣べはじめて言われた、「悔い改めよ、天国は近づいた」。

4:18さて、イエスがガリラヤの海べを歩いておられると、ふたりの兄弟、すなわち、ペテロと呼ばれたシモンとその兄弟アンデレとが、海に網を打っているのをごらんになった。彼らは漁師であった。 4:19イエスは彼らに言われた、「わたしについてきなさい。あなたがたを、人間をとる漁師にしてあげよう」。 4:20すると、彼らはすぐに網を捨てて、イエスに従った。 4:21そこから進んで行かれると、ほかのふたりの兄弟、すなわち、ゼベダイの子ヤコブとその兄弟ヨハネとが、父ゼベダイと一緒に、舟の中で網を繕っているのをごらんになった。そこで彼らをお招きになると、 4:22すぐ舟と父とをおいて、イエスに従って行った。

4:23イエスはガリラヤの全地を巡り歩いて、諸会堂で教え、御国の福音を宣べ伝え、民の中のあらゆる病気、あらゆるわずらいをおいやしになった。 4:24そこで、その評判はシリヤ全地にひろまり、人々があらゆる病にかかっている者、すなわち、いろいろの病気と苦しみとに悩んでいる者、悪霊につかれている者、てんかん、中風の者などをイエスのところに連れてきたので、これらの人々をおいやしになった。 4:25こうして、ガリラヤ、デカポリス、エルサレム、ユダヤ及びヨルダンの向こうから、おびただしい群衆がきてイエスに従った。

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

In those days John the Baptist came, [ preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying ], “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” This is he [ who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah ]:

“A voice of one [ calling in the wilderness ],
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
    make straight paths for him.’”

John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. [ Confessing their sins ], they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

But [ when he saw { many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to ( where he was baptizing ) } ], he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you [ to flee from the { coming } wrath ]? Produce fruit in [ keeping with repentance ]. And do not think [ you can say to yourselves ] , ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ I tell you [ that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham ]. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree [ that does not produce good fruit ] will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

“I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one [ who is more powerful than I ], [ whose sandals I am not worthy { to carry } ]. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His [ winnowing ] fork is in his hand, and he will clear his [ threshing ] floor, [ gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire ].”

The Baptism of Jesus

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan [ to be baptized by John ]. But John tried [ to deter him ], [ saying ], “I need [ to be baptized by you ], and do you come to me?”

Jesus replied, “Let [ it be so now ]; it is proper [ for us { to do this ( to fulfill all righteousness ) } ].” Then John consented.

[ As soon as Jesus was baptized ], he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw [ the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him ]. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, [ whom I love ]; with him I am well pleased.”

3:1そのころ、バプテスマのヨハネが現れ、ユダヤの荒野で教を宣べて言った、 3:2「悔い改めよ、天国は近づいた」。 3:3預言者イザヤによって、

「荒野で呼ばわる者の声がする、
『主の道を備えよ、
その道筋をまっすぐにせよ』」

と言われたのは、この人のことである。

3:4このヨハネは、らくだの毛ごろもを着物にし、腰に皮の帯をしめ、いなごと野蜜とを食物としていた。 3:5すると、エルサレムとユダヤ全土とヨルダン附近一帯の人々が、ぞくぞくとヨハネのところに出てきて、 3:6自分の罪を告白し、ヨルダン川でヨハネからバプテスマを受けた。 3:7ヨハネは、パリサイ人やサドカイ人が大ぜいバプテスマを受けようとしてきたのを見て、彼らに言った、「まむしの子らよ、迫ってきている神の怒りから、おまえたちはのがれられると、だれが教えたのか。 3:8だから、悔改めにふさわしい実を結べ。 3:9自分たちの父にはアブラハムがあるなどと、心の中で思ってもみるな。おまえたちに言っておく、神はこれらの石ころからでも、アブラハムの子を起すことができるのだ。 3:10斧がすでに木の根もとに置かれている。だから、良い実を結ばない木はことごとく切られて、火の中に投げ込まれるのだ。 3:11わたしは悔改めのために、水でおまえたちにバプテスマを授けている。しかし、わたしのあとから来る人はわたしよりも力のあるかたで、わたしはそのくつをぬがせてあげる値うちもない。このかたは、聖霊と火とによっておまえたちにバプテスマをお授けになるであろう。 3:12また、箕を手に持って、打ち場の麦をふるい分け、麦は倉に納め、からは消えない火で焼き捨てるであろう」。

3:13そのときイエスは、ガリラヤを出てヨルダン川に現れ、ヨハネのところにきて、バプテスマを受けようとされた。 3:14ところがヨハネは、それを思いとどまらせようとして言った、「わたしこそあなたからバプテスマを受けるはずですのに、あなたがわたしのところにおいでになるのですか」。 3:15しかし、イエスは答えて言われた、「今は受けさせてもらいたい。このように、すべての正しいことを成就するのは、われわれにふさわしいことである」。そこでヨハネはイエスの言われるとおりにした。 3:16イエスはバプテスマを受けるとすぐ、水から上がられた。すると、見よ、天が開け、神の御霊がはとのように自分の上に下ってくるのを、ごらんになった。 3:17また天から声があって言った、「これはわたしの愛する子、わたしの心にかなう者である」。

The Magi Visit the Messiah

[ After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod ], Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one [ who has been born king of the Jews ]? We saw his star [ when it rose ] and have come [ to worship him ].”

[ When King Herod heard this ] he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. [ When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law ], he asked them [ where the Messiah was { to be born } ]. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is [ what the prophet has written ]:

“‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
    [ who will shepherd my people Israel ].’”

Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time [ the star had appeared ]. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. [ As soon as you find him ], report to me, [ so that I too may go and worship him ].”

[ After they had heard the king ], they went on their way, and the star [ they had seen { when it rose } ] went ahead of them [ until it stopped over the place { where the child was } ]. [ When they saw the star ], they were overjoyed. On [ coming to the house ], they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. And [ having been warned in a dream { not to go back to Herod } ], they returned to their country by another route.

The Escape to Egypt

[ When they had gone ], an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there [ until I tell you ], for Herod is going [ to search for the child { to kill him } ].”

So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, [ where he stayed until the death of Herod ]. And so was fulfilled [ what the Lord had said through the prophet ]: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

[ When Herod realized { that he had been outwitted by the Magi } ], he was furious, and he gave orders [ to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity { who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time ( he had learned from the Magi ) } ]. Then [ what was said through the prophet Jeremiah ] was fulfilled:

“A voice is heard in Ramah,
    [ weeping ] and great [ mourning ],
[ Rachel weeping for her children ]
    and [ refusing { to be comforted } ],
    [ because they are no more ].”

The Return to Nazareth

[ After Herod died ], an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those [ who were trying { to take the child’s life } ] are dead.”

So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. But [ when he heard [ that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod ], he was afraid [ to go there ]. [ Having been warned in a dream ], he withdrew to the district of Galilee, and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled [ what was said through the prophets ], [ that he would be called a Nazarene ].

2:7そこで、ヘロデはひそかに博士たちを呼んで、星の現れた時について詳しく聞き、 2:8彼らをベツレヘムにつかわして言った、「行って、その幼な子のことを詳しく調べ、見つかったらわたしに知らせてくれ。わたしも拝みに行くから」。 2:9彼らは王の言うことを聞いて出かけると、見よ、彼らが東方で見た星が、彼らより先に進んで、幼な子のいる所まで行き、その上にとどまった。 2:10彼らはその星を見て、非常な喜びにあふれた。 2:11そして、家にはいって、母マリヤのそばにいる幼な子に会い、ひれ伏して拝み、また、宝の箱をあけて、黄金・乳香・没薬などの贈り物をささげた。 2:12そして、夢でヘロデのところに帰るなとのみ告げを受けたので、他の道をとおって自分の国へ帰って行った。

2:13彼らが帰って行ったのち、見よ、主の使が夢でヨセフに現れて言った、「立って、幼な子とその母を連れて、エジプトに逃げなさい。そして、あなたに知らせるまで、そこにとどまっていなさい。ヘロデが幼な子を捜し出して、殺そうとしている」。 2:14そこで、ヨセフは立って、夜の間に幼な子とその母とを連れてエジプトへ行き、 2:15ヘロデが死ぬまでそこにとどまっていた。それは、主が預言者によって「エジプトからわが子を呼び出した」と言われたことが、成就するためである。

2:16さて、ヘロデは博士たちにだまされたと知って、非常に立腹した。そして人々をつかわし、博士たちから確かめた時に基いて、ベツレヘムとその附近の地方とにいる二歳以下の男の子を、ことごとく殺した。 2:17こうして、預言者エレミヤによって言われたことが、成就したのである。

2:18「叫び泣く大いなる悲しみの声が
ラマで聞えた。
ラケルはその子らのためになげいた。
子らがもはやいないので、
慰められることさえ願わなかった」。

2:19さて、ヘロデが死んだのち、見よ、主の使がエジプトにいるヨセフに夢で現れて言った、 2:20「立って、幼な子とその母を連れて、イスラエルの地に行け。幼な子の命をねらっていた人々は、死んでしまった」。 2:21そこでヨセフは立って、幼な子とその母とを連れて、イスラエルの地に帰った。 2:22しかし、アケラオがその父ヘロデに代ってユダヤを治めていると聞いたので、そこへ行くことを恐れた。そして夢でみ告げを受けたので、ガリラヤの地方に退き、 2:23ナザレという町に行って住んだ。これは預言者たちによって、「彼はナザレ人と呼ばれるであろう」と言われたことが、成就するためである。

Jesus Has Risen

[ When the Sabbath was over ], Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices [ so that they might go { to anoint Jesus’ body } ]. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”

But [ when they looked up ], they saw [ that the stone, { which was very large }, had been rolled away ]. [ As they entered the tomb ], they saw a young man [ dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side ], and they were alarmed.

“Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, [ who was crucified ]. He has risen! He is not here. See the place [ where they laid him ]. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, [ just as he told you ].’”

[ Trembling and bewildered ], the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, [ because they were afraid ].

^{9   [} When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week ], he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, [ out of whom he had driven seven demons ]. She went and told those [ who had been with him and who were mourning and weeping ]. [ When they heard { that Jesus was alive } and { that she had seen him } ], they did not believe it.

Afterward Jesus appeared in a different form to two of them [ while they were walking in the country ]. These returned and reported it to the rest; but they did not believe them either.

Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven [ as they were eating ]; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal [ to believe those { who had seen him ( after he had risen ) } ].

He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. [ Whoever believes and is baptized ] will be saved, but [ whoever does not believe ] will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those [ who believe ]: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and [ when they drink deadly poison ], it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

[ After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them ], he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs [ that accompanied it ].

第16章

16:1さて、安息日が終ったので、マグダラのマリヤとヤコブの母マリヤとサロメとが、行ってイエスに塗るために、香料を買い求めた。 16:2そして週の初めの日に、早朝、日の出のころ墓に行った。 16:3そして、彼らは「だれが、わたしたちのために、墓の入口から石をころがしてくれるのでしょうか」と話し合っていた。 16:4ところが、目をあげて見ると、石はすでにころがしてあった。この石は非常に大きかった。 16:5墓の中にはいると、右手に真白な長い衣を着た若者がすわっているのを見て、非常に驚いた。 16:6するとこの若者は言った、「驚くことはない。あなたがたは十字架につけられたナザレ人イエスを捜しているのであろうが、イエスはよみがえって、ここにはおられない。ごらんなさい、ここがお納めした場所である。 16:7今から弟子たちとペテロとの所へ行って、こう伝えなさい。イエスはあなたがたより先にガリラヤへ行かれる。かねて、あなたがたに言われたとおり、そこでお会いできるであろう、と」。 16:8女たちはおののき恐れながら、墓から出て逃げ去った。そして、人には何も言わなかった。恐ろしかったからである。

〔 16:9週の初めの日の朝早く、イエスはよみがえって、まずマグダラのマリヤに御自身をあらわされた。イエスは以前に、この女から七つの悪霊を追い出されたことがある。

16:10マリヤは、イエスと一緒にいた人々が泣き悲しんでいる所に行って、それを知らせた。 16:11彼らは、イエスが生きておられる事と、彼女に御自身をあらわされた事とを聞いたが、信じなかった。

16:12この後、そのうちのふたりが、いなかの方へ歩いていると、イエスはちがった姿で御自身をあらわされた。 16:13このふたりも、ほかの人々の所に行って話したが、彼らはその話を信じなかった。

16:14その後、イエスは十一弟子が食卓についているところに現れ、彼らの不信仰と、心のかたくななことをお責めになった。彼らは、よみがえられたイエスを見た人々の言うことを、信じなかったからである。 16:15そして彼らに言われた、「全世界に出て行って、すべての造られたものに福音を宣べ伝えよ。 16:16信じてバプテスマを受ける者は救われる。しかし、不信仰の者は罪に定められる。 16:17信じる者には、このようなしるしが伴う。すなわち、彼らはわたしの名で悪霊を追い出し、新しい言葉を語り、 16:18へびをつかむであろう。また、毒を飲んでも、決して害を受けない。病人に手をおけば、いやされる」。

16:19主イエスは彼らに語り終ってから、天にあげられ、神の右にすわられた。 16:20弟子たちは出て行って、至る所で福音を宣べ伝えた。主も彼らと共に働き、御言に伴うしるしをもって、その確かなことをお示しになった。〕

きょうの潮流

慣れないし、慣れたくもありません。消費税の８％への増税から１カ月。日々の買い物は苦痛の連続です▼税込みで９８円や１００円といった商品が、税抜き表示に変わって１円玉や５円玉を多用せざるをえなくなり、財布はいつもパンパン。税抜きのため、会計が終わるまで支払額が分かりません▼試算によれば、筆者の家庭の場合、年間１０万円の負担増になります。共働きのため、単純計算で毎月４千円から５千円で、１日あたり１００円から２００円。確かにそれぐらいの負担を実感します。居酒屋１回から２回分が毎月、財布から奪われていると腹立たしくなりますが、生活を守るため、所々で支出を抑えるしかありません

▼消費者のがまんは小売店の売り上げ減に直結します。増税１カ月で百貨店や自動車の売り上げは、増税前の駆け込み需要もあって大幅減。

それでも安倍首相は外遊先で、「消費を冷え込ませる恐れは心配したほどではない」と強気の発言です。政府内からも来年の１０％増税を視野に「想定内」発言が相次いでいます

▼しかし、勤労者の賃金は下がり続けています、上がった人でも増税分を吸収できていません。大幅な賃上げがなければ消費が回復する保証などありません。このまま推移すれば日本経済の土台である家計消費が大きく冷え込むことにならないか▼庶民の実感からかけはなれた発言を平気で振りまく閣僚や財界人たちには、スーパーで１円玉をやりとりする生活をぜひ、味わってほしいものです。

Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.

“Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate.

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

The chief priests accused him of many things. So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going [ to answer ]? See [ how many things they are accusing you of ].”

But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.

Now it was the custom at the festival [ to release a prisoner { whom the people requested } ]. A man [ called Barabbas ] was in prison with the insurrectionists [ who had committed murder in the { uprising } ]. The crowd came up and asked Pilate [ to do for them { what he usually did } ].

“Do you want me [ to release to you the king of the Jews ]?” asked Pilate, [ knowing { it was out of self-interest ( that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him ) } ]. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd [ to have Pilate { release Barabbas instead } ].

“What shall I do, then, with the one [ you call the king of the Jews ]?” Pilate asked them.

“Crucify him!” they shouted.

“Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.

But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

[ Wanting { to satisfy the crowd } ], Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had [ Jesus flogged ], and handed him over [ to be crucified ].

The Soldiers Mock Jesus

The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. And they began [ to call out to him ], “Hail, king of the Jews!” Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. [ Falling on their knees ], they paid homage to him. And [ when they had mocked him ], they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out [ to crucify him ].

The Crucifixion of Jesus

A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him [ to carry the cross ]. They brought Jesus to the place [ called Golgotha ] (which means “the place of the skull”). Then they offered him wine [ mixed with myrrh ], but he did not take it. And they crucified him. [ Dividing up his clothes ], they cast lots [ to see { what each would get } ].

It was nine in the morning [ when they crucified him ]. The [ written ] notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.

They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. Those [ who passed by ] hurled insults at him, [ shaking their heads and saying ], “So! You [ who are going { to destroy the temple and build it in three days } ], come down from the cross and save yourself!” In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! Let [ this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down now from the cross, { that we may see and believe } ].” Those [ crucified with him ] also heaped insults on him.

The Death of Jesus

At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”). [ When some of those { standing near } heard this ], they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”

Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus [ to drink ]. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see [ if Elijah comes { to take him down } ],” he said.

With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.

The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. And [ when the centurion, { who stood there in front of Jesus } , saw { how he died } ] , he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”

Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome. In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women [ who had come up with him to Jerusalem ] were also there.

The Burial of Jesus

It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So [ as evening approached ], Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, [ who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God ], went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. Pilate was surprised [ to hear { that he was already dead } ]. [ Summoning the centurion ], he asked him [ if Jesus had already died ]. [ When he learned from the centurion { that it was so } ], he gave the body to Joseph. So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb [ cut out of rock ]. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw [ where he was laid ].

15:33昼の十二時になると、全地は暗くなって、三時に及んだ。 15:34そして三時に、イエスは大声で、「エロイ、エロイ、ラマ、サバクタニ」と叫ばれた。それは「わが神、わが神、どうしてわたしをお見捨てになったのですか」という意味である。 15:35すると、そばに立っていたある人々が、これを聞いて言った、「そら、エリヤを呼んでいる」。 15:36ひとりの人が走って行き、海綿に酢いぶどう酒を含ませて葦の棒につけ、イエスに飲ませようとして言った、「待て、エリヤが彼をおろしに来るかどうか、見ていよう」。 15:37イエスは声高く叫んで、ついに息をひきとられた。 15:38そのとき、神殿の幕が上から下まで真二つに裂けた。 15:39イエスにむかって立っていた百卒長は、このようにして息をひきとられたのを見て言った、「まことに、この人は神の子であった」。 15:40また、遠くの方から見ている女たちもいた。その中には、マグダラのマリヤ、小ヤコブとヨセとの母マリヤ、またサロメがいた。 15:41彼らはイエスがガリラヤにおられたとき、そのあとに従って仕えた女たちであった。なおそのほか、イエスと共にエルサレムに上ってきた多くの女たちもいた。

15:42さて、すでに夕がたになったが、その日は準備の日、すなわち安息日の前日であったので、 15:43アリマタヤのヨセフが大胆にもピラトの所へ行き、イエスのからだの引取りかたを願った。彼は地位の高い議員であって、彼自身、神の国を待ち望んでいる人であった。 15:44ピラトは、イエスがもはや死んでしまったのかと不審に思い、百卒長を呼んで、もう死んだのかと尋ねた。 15:45そして、百卒長から確かめた上、死体をヨセフに渡した。 15:46そこで、ヨセフは亜麻布を買い求め、イエスをとりおろして、その亜麻布に包み、岩を掘って造った墓に納め、墓の入口に石をころがしておいた。 15:47マグダラのマリヤとヨセの母マリヤとは、イエスが納められた場所を見とどけた。

Jesus (is) Anointed at Bethany

Now the Passover and the Festival of [ Unleavened ] Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming [ to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him ]. “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”

[ While he was in Bethany, { reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper } ], a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, [ made of pure nard ]. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.

Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why (does she do) this waste of perfume? It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money (could have been) given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.

“Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time [ you want ]. But you will not always have me. She did [ what she could ]. She poured perfume on my body beforehand [ to prepare for my burial ]. Truly I tell you, [ wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world ], [ what she has done ] will also be told, in memory of her.”

Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests [ to betray Jesus to them ]. They were delighted [ to hear this ] and promised [ to give him money ]. So he watched for an opportunity [ to hand him over ].

The Last Supper

On the first day of the Festival of [ Unleavened ] Bread, [ when it was customary { to sacrifice the Passover lamb } ], Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us [ to go and make preparations for you { to eat the Passover } ]?”

So he sent two of his disciples, [ telling them, “Go into the city, and a man { carrying a jar of water } will meet you ]. Follow him. Say to the owner of the house [ he enters ], ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, [ where I may eat the Passover with my disciples ]?’ He will show you a large room upstairs, [ furnished and ready ]. Make preparations for us there.”

The disciples left, went into the city and found things [ just as Jesus had told them ]. So they prepared the Passover.

[ When evening came ], Jesus arrived with the Twelve. [ While they were reclining at the table { eating } ], he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one [ who is eating with me ].”

They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”

“It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one [ who dips bread into the bowl with me ]. The Son of Man will go [ just as it is written about him ]. But woe to that man [ who betrays the Son of Man ]! It would be better for him [ if he had not been born ].”

[ While they were eating ], Jesus took bread, and [ when he had given thanks ], he broke it and gave it to his disciples, [ saying, “Take it; this is my body.” ]

Then he took a cup, and [ when he had given thanks ], he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.

“This is my blood of the covenant, [ which is poured out for many ],” he said to them. “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day [ when I drink it new in the kingdom of God ].”

[ When they had sung a hymn ], they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

“You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:

“‘I will strike the shepherd,
    and the sheep will be scattered.’

But [ after I have risen ], I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”

Peter declared, “[ Even if all fall away ], I will not.”

“Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—[ before the rooster crows twice ] you yourself will disown me three times.”

But Peter insisted emphatically, “[ Even if I have { to die with you } ], I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.

Gethsemane

They went to a place [ called Gethsemane ], and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here [ while I pray ].” He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began [ to be deeply distressed and troubled ]. “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”

[ Going a little farther ], he fell to the ground and prayed [ that { if possible } the hour might pass from him ]. “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

Then he returned to his disciples and found [ them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? ] Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray [ so that you will not fall into temptation ]. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. [ When he came back ], he again found [ them sleeping ], [ because their eyes were heavy ]. They did not know [ what to say to him ].

[ Returning the third time ], he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. Rise! Let [ us go ]! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus (is) Arrested

[ Just as he was speaking ], Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd [ armed with swords and clubs], [ sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders ].

Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one [ I kiss ] is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” [ Going at once to Jesus ], Judas said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him. The men seized Jesus and arrested him. Then one of those [ standing near ] drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, [ cutting off his ear ].

“Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “[ that you have come out with swords and clubs { to capture me } ]? Every day I was with you, [ teaching in the temple courts ], and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” Then everyone deserted him and fled.

A young man, [ wearing nothing but a linen garment ], was following Jesus. [ When they seized him ], he fled naked, [ leaving his garment behind ].

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin

They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus [ so that they could put him to death ], but they did not find any. Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.

Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: “We heard [ him say, ‘I will destroy this temple { made with human hands } and in three days will build another, { not made with hands }.’ ]” Yet even then their testimony did not agree.

Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going [ to answer ]? What is this testimony [ that these men are bringing against you ]?” But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.

Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the [ Blessed ] One?”

“I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see [ the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven ].”

The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”

They all condemned him as worthy of death. Then some began [ to spit at him ]; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.

Peter Disowns Jesus

[ While Peter was below in the courtyard ], one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. [ When she saw { Peter warming himself } ], she looked closely at him.

“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,” she said.

But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand [ what you’re talking about ],” he said, and went out into the entryway.

[ When the servant girl saw him there ], she said again to those [ standing around ], “This fellow is one of them.” Again he denied it.

After a little while, those [ standing near ] said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”

He began [ to call down curses ], and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man [ you’re talking about ].”

Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word [ Jesus had spoken to him ]: “[Before the rooster crows twice ] you will disown me three times.” And he broke down and wept.

14:1さて、過越と除酵との祭の二日前になった。祭司長たちや律法学者たちは、策略をもってイエスを捕えたうえ、なんとかして殺そうと計っていた。 14:2彼らは、「祭の間はいけない。民衆が騒ぎを起すかも知れない」と言っていた。

14:3イエスがベタニヤで、らい病人シモンの家にいて、食卓についておられたとき、ひとりの女が、非常に高価で純粋なナルドの香油が入れてある石膏のつぼを持ってきて、それをこわし、香油をイエスの頭に注ぎかけた。 14:4すると、ある人々が憤って互に言った、「なんのために香油をこんなにむだにするのか。 14:5この香油を三百デナリ以上にでも売って、貧しい人たちに施すことができたのに」。そして女をきびしくとがめた。 14:6するとイエスは言われた、「するままにさせておきなさい。なぜ女を困らせるのか。わたしによい事をしてくれたのだ。 14:7貧しい人たちはいつもあなたがたと一緒にいるから、したいときにはいつでも、よい事をしてやれる。しかし、わたしはあなたがたといつも一緒にいるわけではない。 14:8この女はできる限りの事をしたのだ。すなわち、わたしのからだに油を注いで、あらかじめ葬りの用意をしてくれたのである。 14:9よく聞きなさい。全世界のどこででも、福音が宣べ伝えられる所では、この女のした事も記念として語られるであろう」。

14:10ときに、十二弟子のひとりイスカリオテのユダは、イエスを祭司長たちに引きわたそうとして、彼らの所へ行った。 14:11彼らはこれを聞いて喜び、金を与えることを約束した。そこでユダは、どうかしてイエスを引きわたそうと、機会をねらっていた。

14:12除酵祭の第一日、すなわち過越の小羊をほふる日に、弟子たちがイエスに尋ねた、「わたしたちは、過越の食事をなさる用意を、どこへ行ってしたらよいでしょうか」。 14:13そこで、イエスはふたりの弟子を使いに出して言われた、「市内に行くと、水がめを持っている男に出会うであろう。その人について行きなさい。 14:14そして、その人がはいって行く家の主人に言いなさい、『弟子たちと一緒に過越の食事をする座敷はどこか、と先生が言っておられます』。 14:15するとその主人は、席を整えて用意された二階の広間を見せてくれるから、そこにわたしたちのために用意をしなさい」。 14:16弟子たちは出かけて市内に行って見ると、イエスが言われたとおりであったので、過越の食事の用意をした。

14:17夕方になって、イエスは十二弟子と一緒にそこに行かれた。 14:18そして、一同が席について食事をしているとき言われた、「特にあなたがたに言っておくが、あなたがたの中のひとりで、わたしと一緒に食事をしている者が、わたしを裏切ろうとしている」。 14:19弟子たちは心配して、ひとりびとり「まさか、わたしではないでしょう」と言い出した。 14:20イエスは言われた、「十二人の中のひとりで、わたしと一緒に同じ鉢にパンをひたしている者が、それである。 14:21たしかに人の子は、自分について書いてあるとおりに去って行く。しかし、人の子を裏切るその人は、わざわいである。その人は生れなかった方が、彼のためによかったであろう」。

14:22一同が食事をしているとき、イエスはパンを取り、祝福してこれをさき、弟子たちに与えて言われた、「取れ、これはわたしのからだである」。 14:23また杯を取り、感謝して彼らに与えられると、一同はその杯から飲んだ。 14:24イエスはまた言われた、「これは、多くの人のために流すわたしの契約の血である。 14:25あなたがたによく言っておく。神の国で新しく飲むその日までは、わたしは決して二度と、ぶどうの実から造ったものを飲むことをしない」。

14:26彼らは、さんびを歌った後、オリブ山へ出かけて行った。

14:27そのとき、イエスは弟子たちに言われた、「あなたがたは皆、わたしにつまずくであろう。『わたしは羊飼を打つ。そして、羊は散らされるであろう』と書いてあるからである。 14:28しかしわたしは、よみがえってから、あなたがたより先にガリラヤへ行くであろう」。 14:29するとペテロはイエスに言った、「たとい、みんなの者がつまずいても、わたしはつまずきません」。 14:30イエスは言われた、「あなたによく言っておく。きょう、今夜、にわとりが二度鳴く前に、そう言うあなたが、三度わたしを知らないと言うだろう」。 14:31ペテロは力をこめて言った、「たといあなたと一緒に死なねばならなくなっても、あなたを知らないなどとは、決して申しません」。みんなの者もまた、同じようなことを言った。

14:32さて、一同はゲツセマネという所にきた。そしてイエスは弟子たちに言われた、「わたしが祈っている間、ここにすわっていなさい」。 14:33そしてペテロ、ヤコブ、ヨハネを一緒に連れて行かれたが、恐れおののき、また悩みはじめて、彼らに言われた、 14:34「わたしは悲しみのあまり死ぬほどである。ここに待っていて、目をさましていなさい」。 14:35そして少し進んで行き、地にひれ伏し、もしできることなら、この時を過ぎ去らせてくださるようにと祈りつづけ、そして言われた、 14:36「アバ、父よ、あなたには、できないことはありません。どうか、この杯をわたしから取りのけてください。しかし、わたしの思いではなく、みこころのままになさってください」。 14:37それから、きてごらんになると、弟子たちが眠っていたので、ペテロに言われた、「シモンよ、眠っているのか、ひと時も目をさましていることができなかったのか。 14:38誘惑に陥らないように、目をさまして祈っていなさい。心は熱しているが、肉体が弱いのである」。 14:39また離れて行って同じ言葉で祈られた。 14:40またきてごらんになると、彼らはまだ眠っていた。その目が重くなっていたのである。そして、彼らはどうお答えしてよいか、わからなかった。 14:41三度目にきて言われた、「まだ眠っているのか、休んでいるのか。もうそれでよかろう。時がきた。見よ、人の子は罪人らの手に渡されるのだ。 14:42立て、さあ行こう。見よ、わたしを裏切る者が近づいてきた」。

14:43そしてすぐ、イエスがまだ話しておられるうちに、十二弟子のひとりのユダが進みよってきた。また祭司長、律法学者、長老たちから送られた群衆も、剣と棒とを持って彼についてきた。 14:44イエスを裏切る者は、あらかじめ彼らに合図をしておいた、「わたしの接吻する者が、その人だ。その人をつかまえて、まちがいなく引ひっぱって行け」。 14:45彼は来るとすぐ、イエスに近寄り、「先生」と言って接吻した。 14:46人々はイエスに手をかけてつかまえた。 14:47すると、イエスのそばに立っていた者のひとりが、剣を抜いて大祭司の僕に切りかかり、その片耳を切り落した。 14:48イエスは彼らにむかって言われた、「あなたがたは強盗にむかうように、剣や棒を持ってわたしを捕えにきたのか。 14:49わたしは毎日あなたがたと一緒に宮にいて教えていたのに、わたしをつかまえはしなかった。しかし聖書の言葉は成就されねばならない」。 14:50弟子たちは皆イエスを見捨てて逃げ去った。

14:51ときに、ある若者が身に亜麻布をまとって、イエスのあとについて行ったが、人々が彼をつかまえようとしたので、 14:52その亜麻布を捨てて、裸で逃げて行った。

14:53それから、イエスを大祭司のところに連れて行くと、祭司長、長老、律法学者たちがみな集まってきた。 14:54ペテロは遠くからイエスについて行って、大祭司の中庭まではいり込み、その下役どもにまじってすわり、火にあたっていた。

14:55さて、祭司長たちと全議会とは、イエスを死刑にするために、イエスに不利な証拠を見つけようとしたが、得られなかった。 14:56多くの者がイエスに対して偽証を立てたが、その証言が合わなかったからである。 14:57ついに、ある人々が立ちあがり、イエスに対して偽証を立てて言った、 14:58「わたしたちはこの人が『わたしは手で造ったこの神殿を打ちこわし、三日の後に手で造られない別の神殿を建てるのだ』と言うのを聞きました」。 14:59しかし、このような証言も互に合わなかった。 14:60そこで大祭司が立ちあがって、まん中に進み、イエスに聞きただして言った、「何も答えないのか。これらの人々があなたに対して不利な証言を申し立てているが、どうなのか」。 14:61しかし、イエスは黙っていて、何もお答えにならなかった。大祭司は再び聞きただして言った、「あなたは、ほむべき者の子、キリストであるか」。 14:62イエスは言われた、「わたしがそれである。あなたがたは人の子が力ある者の右に座し、天の雲に乗って来るのを見るであろう」。 14:63すると、大祭司はその衣を引き裂いて言った、「どうして、これ以上、証人の必要があろう。 14:64あなたがたはこのけがし言を聞いた。あなたがたの意見はどうか」。すると、彼らは皆、イエスを死に当るものと断定した。 14:65そして、ある者はイエスにつばきをかけ、目隠しをし、こぶしでたたいて、「言いあててみよ」と言いはじめた。また下役どもはイエスを引きとって、手のひらでたたいた。

14:66ペテロは下で中庭にいたが、大祭司の女中のひとりがきて、 14:67ペテロが火にあたっているのを見ると、彼を見つめて、「あなたもあのナザレ人イエスと一緒だった」と言った。 14:68するとペテロはそれを打ち消して、「わたしは知らない。あなたの言うことがなんの事か、わからない」と言って、庭口の方に出て行った。 14:69ところが、先の女中が彼を見て、そばに立っていた人々に、またもや「この人はあの仲間のひとりです」と言いだした。 14:70ペテロは再びそれを打ち消した。しばらくして、そばに立っていた人たちがまたペテロに言った、「確かにあなたは彼らの仲間だ。あなたもガリラヤ人だから」。 14:71しかし、彼は、「あなたがたの話しているその人のことは何も知らない」と言い張って、激しく誓いはじめた。 14:72するとすぐ、にわとりが二度目に鳴いた。ペテロは、「にわとりが二度鳴く前に、三度わたしを知らないと言うであろう」と言われたイエスの言葉を思い出し、そして思いかえして泣きつづけた。

あ～ぁ、もうすぐ、６５歳。隣のお婆さんは、痴呆を患っているが、半分はまとも。人を疑う人。女らしいのか、うそをつく。あ～ぁ、僕は、これからどうなる?この地は、僕の死ぬ地。神の定めた地?ここからは、僕の記憶の最初の地が見える。

Jesus Restores a Demon-[ Possessed ] Man

They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. [ When Jesus got out of the boat ], a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs [ to meet him ]. This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough [ to subdue him ]. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.

[ When he saw Jesus from a distance ], he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!” For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”

Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”

“My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.” And he begged Jesus again and again [ not to send them out of the area ].

A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us [ to go into them ].” He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.

Those [ tending the pigs ] ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out [ to see { what had happened } ]. [ When they came to Jesus ], they saw the man [ who had been possessed by the legion of demons ], [ sitting there, { dressed } and in his right mind ]; and they were afraid. Those [ who had seen it ] told the people [ what had happened to the demon-{ possessed } man ]—and told about the pigs as well. Then the people began to plead with Jesus [ to leave their region ].

[ As Jesus was getting into the boat ], the man [ who had been demon-{ possessed } ] begged [ to go with him ]. Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them [ how much the Lord has done for you ], and [ how he has had mercy on you ].” So the man went away and began [ to tell in the Decapolis { how much Jesus had done for him } ]. And all the people were amazed.

Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman

[ When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake ], a large crowd gathered around him [ while he was by the lake ]. Then one of the synagogue leaders, [ named Jairus ], came, and [ when he saw Jesus ], he fell at his feet. He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her [ so that she will be healed and live ].” So Jesus went with him.

A large crowd followed and pressed around him. And a woman was there [ who had been subject to { bleeding for twelve years } ]. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all [ she had ], yet instead of [ getting better ] she grew worse. [ When she heard about Jesus ], she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, [ because she thought, “{ If I just touch his clothes }, I will be healed.” Immediately her [ bleeding ] stopped and she felt in her body [ that she was freed from her { suffering } ].

At once Jesus realized [ that power had gone out from him ]. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”

“You see [ the people crowding against you ],” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ”

But Jesus kept [ looking around { to see ( who had done it ) } ]. Then the woman, [ knowing { what had happened to her } ], came and fell at his feet and, [ trembling with fear ], told him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your [ suffering ].”

[ While Jesus was still speaking ], some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why (do you) bother the teacher anymore?”

[ Overhearing { what they said } ], Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”

He did not let anyone [ follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James ]. [ When they came to the home of the synagogue leader ], Jesus saw a commotion, with [ people crying and wailing loudly ]. He went in and said to them, “Why (do you have) all this commotion and [ wailing ]? The child is not dead but asleep.” But they laughed at him.

[ After he put them all out ], he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples [ who were with him ], and went in [ where the child was ]. He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). Immediately the girl stood up and began [ to walk around ] (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. He gave strict orders [ not to let anyone { know about this } ], and told them [ to give her something { to eat } ].

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times

[ As Jesus was leaving the temple ], one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!”

“Do you see all these great [ buildings ]?” replied Jesus. “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”

[ As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives (which was) opposite the temple ], Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately, “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign [ that they are all about { to be fulfilled } ]?”

Jesus said to them: “Watch out [ that no one deceives you ]. Many will come in my name, [ claiming, ‘I am he,’ ] and will deceive many. [ When you hear of wars and rumors of wars ], do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is [ still to come ]. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the [ beginning ] of birth pains.

“You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. [ Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial ], do not worry beforehand about what [ to say ]. Just say [ whatever is given you at the time ], for it is not you [ speaking ], but the Holy Spirit.

“Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them [ put to death ]. Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one [ who stands firm to the end ] will be saved.

“[ When you see ‘the abomination { that causes desolation’ } { standing
( where it does not belong ) } ]—let the reader [ understand ]—then let those [ who are in Judea ] [ flee to the mountains ]. Let no one on the housetop [ go down or enter the house { to take anything out } ]. Let no one in the field [ go back { to get their cloak } ]. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and [ nursing ] mothers! Pray [ that this will not take place in winter ], [ because those will be days of distress { unequaled from the ( beginning, ( when God created the world ) ), until now }—and { never to be equaled again } ].

“[ If the Lord had not cut short those days ], no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, [ whom he has chosen ], he has shortened them. At that time [ if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘Look, there he is!’ ] do not believe it. For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders [ to deceive, { if possible }, even the elect ]. So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time.

“But in those days, [ following that distress ],

“‘the sun will be darkened,
    and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
    and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’

“At that time people will see [ the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory ]. And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.

“Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: [ As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out ], you know [ that summer is near ]. Even so, [ when you see { these things happening } ], you know [ that it is near, right at the door ]. 

Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away [ until all these things have happened ]. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

The Day and Hour (is) Unknown

“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know [ when that time will come ]. It’s like [ a man going away ]: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their [ assigned ] task, and tells the one at the door [ to keep watch ].

“Therefore keep watch [ because you do not know { when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or ( when the rooster crows ), or at dawn ]. [ If he comes suddenly ], do not let him [ find you { sleeping } ]. [ What I say to you ], I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’”

13:1イエスが宮から出て行かれるとき、弟子のひとりが言った、「先生、ごらんなさい。なんという見事な石、なんという立派な建物でしょう」。 13:2イエスは言われた、「あなたは、これらの大きな建物をながめているのか。その石一つでもくずされないままで、他の石の上に残ることもなくなるであろう」。

13:3またオリブ山で、宮にむかってすわっておられると、ペテロ、ヤコブ、ヨハネ、アンデレが、ひそかにお尋ねした。 13:4「わたしたちにお話しください。いつ、そんなことが起るのでしょうか。またそんなことがことごとく成就するような場合には、どんな前兆がありますか」。 13:5そこで、イエスは話しはじめられた、「人に惑わされないように気をつけなさい。 13:6多くの者がわたしの名を名のって現れ、自分がそれだと言って、多くの人を惑わすであろう。 13:7また、戦争と戦争のうわさとを聞くときにも、あわてるな。それは起らねばならないが、まだ終りではない。 13:8民は民に、国は国に敵対して立ち上がるであろう。またあちこちに地震があり、またききんが起るであろう。これらは産みの苦しみの初めである。

13:9あなたがたは自分で気をつけていなさい。あなたがたは、わたしのために、衆議所に引きわたされ、会堂で打たれ、長官たちや王たちの前に立たされ、彼らに対してあかしをさせられるであろう。 13:10こうして、福音はまずすべての民に宣べ伝えられねばならない。 13:11そして、人々があなたがたを連れて行って引きわたすとき、何を言おうかと、前もって心配するな。その場合、自分に示されることを語るがよい。語る者はあなたがた自身ではなくて、聖霊である。 13:12また兄弟は兄弟を、父は子を殺すために渡し、子は両親に逆らって立ち、彼らを殺させるであろう。 13:13また、あなたがたはわたしの名のゆえに、すべての人に憎まれるであろう。しかし、最後まで耐え忍ぶ者は救われる。

13:14荒らす憎むべきものが、立ってはならぬ所に立つのを見たならば（読者よ、悟れ）、そのとき、ユダヤにいる人々は山へ逃げよ。 13:15屋上にいる者は、下におりるな。また家から物を取り出そうとして内にはいるな。 13:16畑にいる者は、上着を取りにあとへもどるな。 13:17その日には、身重の女と乳飲み子をもつ女とは、不幸である。 13:18この事が冬おこらぬように祈れ。 13:19その日には、神が万物を造られた創造の初めから現在に至るまで、かつてなく今後もないような患難が起るからである。 13:20もし主がその期間を縮めてくださらないなら、救われる者はひとりもないであろう。しかし、選ばれた選民のために、その期間を縮めてくださったのである。 13:21そのとき、だれかがあなたがたに『見よ、ここにキリストがいる』、『見よ、あそこにいる』と言っても、それを信じるな。 13:22にせキリストたちや、にせ預言者たちが起って、しるしと奇跡とを行い、できれば、選民をも惑わそうとするであろう。 13:23だから、気をつけていなさい。いっさいの事を、あなたがたに前もって言っておく。

13:24その日には、この患難の後、日は暗くなり、月はその光を放つことをやめ、 13:25星は空から落ち、天体は揺り動かされるであろう。 13:26そのとき、大いなる力と栄光とをもって、人の子が雲に乗って来るのを、人々は見るであろう。 13:27そのとき、彼は御使たちをつかわして、地のはてから天のはてまで、四方からその選民を呼び集めるであろう。

13:28いちじくの木からこの譬を学びなさい。その枝が柔らかになり、葉が出るようになると、夏の近いことがわかる。 13:29そのように、これらの事が起るのを見たならば、人の子が戸口まで近づいていると知りなさい。 13:30よく聞いておきなさい。これらの事が、ことごとく起るまでは、この時代は滅びることがない。 13:31天地は滅びるであろう。しかしわたしの言葉は滅びることがない。 13:32その日、その時は、だれも知らない。天にいる御使たちも、また子も知らない、ただ父だけが知っておられる。 13:33気をつけて、目をさましていなさい。その時がいつであるか、あなたがたにはわからないからである。 13:34それはちょうど、旅に立つ人が家を出るに当り、その僕たちに、それぞれ仕事を割り当てて責任をもたせ、門番には目をさましておれと、命じるようなものである。 13:35だから、目をさましていなさい。いつ、家の主人が帰って来るのか、夕方か、夜中か、にわとりの鳴くころか、明け方か、わからないからである。 13:36あるいは急に帰ってきて、あなたがたの眠っているところを見つけるかも知れない。 13:37目をさましていなさい。わたしがあなたがたに言うこの言葉は、すべての人々に言うのである」。

天に居る我らの父よ、主の名を誉めます。御心が天に成るように、この地にも成させてください。私たちの主は聖霊によってなり、これまで地上に平和を築いてきました。見捨てられる人が居なくなるようにしてください。
