Me Hey Dali. Do you like Japanese onsen ryokans? Personally, I like them very much.
私 ねえ、ダリちゃん。日本の温泉旅館は好き？ 僕は個人的には大好きだけど。
Dali You know, my friend Daniel often goes to onsen ryokans with his horrible girlfriend. He probably goes to onsen ryokans twice a year. He loves onsens. He maybe has been to 100 different onsen ryokans from all over Japan. From the northern part of Japan to the southern part of Japan, he has stayed at a huge number of Japanese onsen ryokans.
ダリちゃん あのね、わしの友達のダニエルちゃんは、酷いガールフレンドとよく温泉旅館に行く。多分年に2回、温泉旅館に行くんじゃないかな。彼は温泉が大好きなんだ。多分、日本中の温泉旅館100箇所は行ってるんじゃないかな。日本の北から南まで、彼が泊まった日本の温泉旅館はものすごい数になるんじゃないかな。
Me Oh, he must be very rich.
私 へー、お金持ってるんだね。
Dali I don’t know. Concerning most things, he is the stingiest person I have ever met. But he does spend a lot of money on onsens.
ダリちゃん さあね。大概のことに対しては、彼ほどケチな人間はいないけどね。でも温泉には金を惜しまないんだ。
Me I’m jealous.
私 羨ましい。
Dali Anyway, he is in direct contrast to me. I have never, in my entire 15 years of life in Japan, gone to an onsen.
ダリちゃん とにかく、彼はわしとは真逆なんだ。日本での15年間ずっと、わしは温泉に行ったことが無い。
Me You poor thing! Why don’t you go to onsens?
私 まあ、かわいそうに。なぜ温泉に行かないの？
Dali First, I hate travel. That’s one reason. Good onsens, whether in Tohoku, some part of Kyushu, or Hokkaido, are too far. In my 15 years of life in Japan, I have rarely left Kanto because I hate travelling to far places.
ダリちゃん 第一に、わしは旅行が嫌い。それが理由の一つ。東北でも、九州の一部や北海道でも、一流の温泉はとても遠い。わしの15年間の日本での生活で、滅多に関東から出たことは無い。わしは遠くに旅行するのが嫌いだから。
Me How about Hakone? It’s relatively close.
私 箱根はどう？ 割と近いよ。
Dali Oh, I was thinking about Hakone. Well, actually, I have been to Hakone, but I have never been to a Hakone onsen. Let me give you my second reason.
ダリちゃん そう、わしも箱根のことを考えていた。うーん、実際、箱根に入ったことがあるけど、箱根温泉には一度も行ったことは無い。第二の理由があるんだ。
Me Oh, what is it?
私 ほー、なーに？
Dali If I desire to wash my body, I use a shower, not a bath. I don’t like baths. So if I don’t like baths, of course, I would not like onsens. One may say, “No, Dali-chan. Onsen water is different.” I reply, “No, no. I don’t like to sit in water. I don’t care whether the water is comfortable or not. I hate just sitting in water at home or anywhere.” That’s the second reason I have never been to an onsen.
ダリちゃん わしが体を洗いたい時、わしはお風呂ではなくシャワーを使う。わしはお風呂が嫌い。で、お風呂が嫌いなら、もちろん温泉は好きではないだろう？ 「いいえ、ダリちゃん。温泉のお湯は違うんだよ」と言う人がいるかもしれない。わしは「いえいえ、わしはお湯の中に座ってるのが嫌なんだ。お湯が気持ちいいかどうかは関係ない。自宅でもどこでもお湯の中でただ座ってるのが嫌なんだ」と答える。これがわしが温泉に行かない2つ目の理由。
Me Why you hate sitting in water?
私 なぜ、お湯の中で座ってるのが嫌なの？
Dali Because I cannot stand to be in some place for a period of time with no stimulation to my brain. So, on a train, for example, going from Tokyo to Yokohama every Wednesday, I’m always reading something. But in an onsen, I can’t read a book because the steam destroys the pages. Similarly, I can’t use a PC in the bath. I can’t enjoy the hot water with my brain being non-stimulated. I would become so bored. I can’t remain in a bath for even 5 minutes. This is why I don’t like onsens.
ダリちゃん だって、わしは一箇所に一定時間、脳に何も刺激がない状態でいるのには耐えられないんだ。だからたとえば毎週水曜日の東京から横浜に行く電車の中では、わしはいつも何か読み物をしている。でも温泉では湯気でページがダメになるので本は読めない。同様に、お風呂でパソコンは使えない。脳に何も刺激なしに温泉を楽しむことはできないんだ。とても退屈しちゃうからね。5分もお湯の中で入れないよ。だからわしは温泉が嫌い。

Escaping from the hustle and bustle of a city, I am fond of relaxing in hot water in the open-air bath of a quaint onsen ryokan deep in the mountains. While soaking up to my shoulders, I look up at the starry sky, recalling what I’ve done so far and thinking over my future life. Japanese onsens are superb!
都会の喧騒を離れ、山奥の鄙びた温泉旅館の露天風呂のお湯の中でリラックスするのが僕は好き。肩まで浸かって星空を見上げる。今までしてきたことを思いめぐらしながら、自分の未来に思いを馳せながら。日本の温泉は最高だね。
