Comparing CD Duplication with CD Replication

Whether to duplicate or to replicate is an uncertainty which puzzles many people who need to make copies of CDs'. The only way out of this confusion is to gain a thorough understanding of both. Many people tend to use the terms CD duplication and CD replication interchangeably but there is a subtle difference between the two in almost every aspect. Apart from the media of manufacturing, some of the aspects which form the basis of differentiation are the process, quality, quantity and cost. CD duplication is carried out in two phases wherein the first phase entails preparation of information for being written on the CD and the second phase calls for writing of this information on to the CD. In case of CD replication, there is a master disc of a very high quality from which replicas of exactly the same quality are created after a series of steps and could be called clones of the original. The procedure begins with creation of a glass master by transferring data using lasers like photo-resist or dye polymer after which the stamper or the source disk is derived from it. Next it is the stamper which is loaded into a mold to generate replicated CDs' which are of the same quality. Hence as compared to CD duplication, this process takes much longer to complete.
Having understood the procedure involved, it is but obvious that if only one CD is to be acquired, then CD duplication is the way to go whereas CD replication could be opted for in case of burning thousands of CDs'. This logic is applicable in terms of cost as well because just to acquire a single copy going through the entire procedure of glass master, stamper and so on would cost to the point of being exorbitant. An easier approach would be to duplicate it into a couple of disks and hope that at least one would be perfect. Likewise, for more than 1000 copies, replication is the way to go.
While CD duplication does not have any lower limits on the number of disks to be copied, people often raise concerns over its quality. In spite of the fact that duplication services often claim that their quality is as good as that of a replicated CD, it has always been the latter which has been found to be better. The reason underlying this superiority is that the glass master which forms the basis of CD replication is of exceptionally high quality Moreover, subsequent to replication the glass master is subjected to post-mastering wherein the disk is baked, electroplated and electroformed with the intention of preserving the data on it.
Both methods have their respective pros and cons, the foremost in case of CD duplication being its cost effective nature. Since it can be done at home, it enables the user to save up a lot of money in the long run. In addition, this method is not just time saving but relatively free from errors as well as all it requires is a single program to perform the task. CD replication has its advantages as well and although it is a complex procedure, there is no compromise on quality thereby resulting in creating a lasting impression.
