Dad Will Really Like This　お父さんはこれをきっと気に入る

No more neckties! ネクタイはもう遠慮します！

Sunday is Father’s Day, and we dads/ will be overwhelmed with /neckties and wrench sets. We will feign/ ecstasy, and our loved ones /will pretend to believe/ our protestations of pleasure.

日曜は父の日です、我々父親連中はネクタイやレンチのセットで感極まることになります。私達は有頂天のふりをして、愛すべき家族は、我々が喜びを言葉にするのを（嬉しいと言い張るのを）信じる振りをするでしょう。

But for a really nifty Father’s Day gift, how about /sponsoring a rat? Specifically, an African giant pouched rat, about 30 inches long including tail. These are he-man rats, the kind that send cats fleeing. What’s more, we’re not talking about just any giant rat, but an educated one with the rodent equivalent of a Ph.D.

A Dutch company, Apopo, has trained these giant rats, which have poor sight but excellent noses, to detect landmines in Africa. The rats are too light to set off the mines, but they can explore a suspected minefield and point with their noses to buried mines. After many months of training, a rat can clear as much land in 20 minutes as a human can in two days.

Possible TB sufferers/ provide /samples of sputum, which are then handed over/ to the rats to sniff out. This detection process /turns out to be/ much faster than your typical microscope examination. A technician with a microscope in Tanzania /can screen about 40 samples a day, while one giant rat/ can screen the same amount/ in seven minutes.

見ていて、負ける気がしなかったのですが、でも次に繋がります

今日のテーマは、父の日にちなんでNo more neckties!

これは先日の体験講習で取り上げました

１）音読をしましょう、それから主語・動詞を意識して、区切ります。

２）書いても或いは、言葉に出して意味が通じるように訳します。
必ず、文頭は主語、最後が動詞で終わります。

３）分からない単語はしっかりと文脈に合わせて、辞書で一番適切な
意味を見つけ出しましょう！　ここがミソ　例えばprotestatation

４）わからない構文や、熟語に意識を向けます。

５）意味が理解できたら、一日2-3回　声に出して読んでみます、初めはゆっくり読み、分かるようになれば、速度を上げます。

ネイティブの英文では、ある単語を繰り返すことを避けて、別の単語で表現する傾向があります。
例えば　feign 聞きなれない単語ですが、＜pretend ・・・のふりをする＞と同義です。　
他に overwhelmed です、その同義語は文中のどの単語でしょう？

これはお父さんがプレゼントで＜感極まる＞ふりをするシーンを別の言葉で表現しています。
ecstasy有頂天　,prostestations of pleasure 喜びをハッキリと伝える（喜びの主張）は、同じ事を指しています。

Happiness May Come With Age, Study Says

It is inevitable. The muscles weaken. Hearing and vision fade. We get wrinkled and stooped. We can’t run, or even walk, as fast as we used to. We have aches and pains in parts of our bodies /we never even noticed before. We get old.

それは避けられない、筋肉は衰え、耳は遠くなり眼はかすむ。皺ができ背中が丸くなる。走れなくなり、歩けなくなる、以前ほど速くは出来ない。まえは気付くことさえなかった身体の部分に痛みがでる。年をとったのだ。

It sounds miserable, but apparently it is not. A large Gallup poll has found that/ by almost any measure, people get happier as they get older, and researchers are not sure why.

情けないように思えるが、全然違う。大規模なギャラップ調査で、（ほぼどんな計測方法をとっても）まず、人は年を重ねるほど幸せになる、それから研究者はなぜそうかについて分かっていないとうことが、わかった。

“It could be that there are environmental changes,”（ said Arthur A. Stone, the lead author of a new study based on the survey, ）“or it could be psychological changes/ about the way we view the world, or it could even be biological ― for example brain chemistry or endocrine changes.”

The survey also asked about “global well-being” /by having each person rank overall life satisfaction /on a 10-point scale, an assessment many people may make from time to time, if not in a strictly formalized way.

その調査では、各人を10点満点方式で生活全般の満足度「世界標準の幸福度」を訊ねた。それは厳密な基準で測定するものでなくて、多くの人が時に査定する方法である。

Finally, there were six yes-or-no questions: Did you experience the following feelings /during a large part of the day yesterday: enjoyment, happiness, stress, worry, anger, sadness. The answers, the researchers say, reveal “hedonic well-being,” a person’s immediate experience of those psychological states, unencumbered by revised memories /or subjective judgments that the query/ about general life satisfaction might have evoked.

最後に、6項目の○×式の質問がでた。一昨日、一日の大半、次のどのような感情をもちましたか、＜楽しさ、幸福感、ストレス、心配、怒り、悲しさ＞です、その答えは「快楽を表す幸福度」が現れている、研究者は主張する。このような6項目のについてのナマの感覚で、振り返ったり生活全般の充足感についての質問で、思い浮かぶ主観的な判断からもぶれない感覚である。

The results,( published online May 17 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences,) were good news for old people, and for those who are getting old. On the global measure, people start out /at age 18/ feeling pretty good about themselves, and then, apparently, life begins to throw curve balls. They feel worse and worse until they hit 50. At that point, there is a sharp reversal, and people keep getting happier /as they age. By the time they are 85, they are even more satisfied with themselves /than they were at 18.


国立科学アカデミーの5月17日の電子版の研究結果は高齢者それにその予備軍には朗報となった。世界的には、18歳で自分はなかなか良いんじゃないと思う気持ちから始まり、５０才になるまでどんどんその思いは悪化する。　その50の時点からＶ字回復する。年を重ねるにつれどんどん幸せになる。85歳になった時点では、18歳で思っていたよりもさらに自分に満足する。
