Every entrepreneur wants to be the bearer of good news, the person who hands out promotions, raises and announces record sales and earnings.
But it is almost inevitable that you will have to deliver bad news, particularly in the current economic climate.
Experts offer the following suggestions on how best to do that.
TAKE CHARGE There is a natural tendency to want to put off delivering bad news as long as possible.
Fight that temptation, Anni Layne writes in Fast Company.
“Procrastination spurs speculation, which can bring down a good leader in no time. When things go bad, people worry, wonder and question. Leaders need to step in and address those questions with swift, straightforward communication before employees begin mistaking fiction for fact.”
FACE THE MUSIC Writing in Personnel Today, Natalie Cooper offers these five rules of thumb, once you have decided to address the problem head on:
1. “Be upfront, honest and open.”
2. “Deliver bad news in person.” Doing it by phone is bad; via e-mail is worse.
3. “If there is more than one person delivering the news, consider scripting it to ensure a consistent message.”
4. Determine who is the best person to deliver the bad news. You want someone who is careful and considerate.
5. “Plan and think through your delivery” to avoid potential lawsuits.
