２２．６ 「機嫌をとる」という意をもつ例
「機嫌をとる」という意をもつ慣用句（一部口語表現を含む）として、日本語には「おべっかを使う」、「おべんちゃらを言う」、「こびへつらう」、「こびる」、「こびを売る」、「ゴマをする」、「しっぽを振る」、「ちょうちんを持つ」、「へつらう」などがある。一方、英語には「apple-polish someone」、「do some apple-polishing」、「polish the apple [an apple or two]」、「brownnose someone」、「butter someone up」、「curry favor with someone」、「kiss someone's ass」、「lick someone's boots」、「play up to someone」、「suck up (to someone)」などがある。また、日本語の「ゴマすり屋」という名詞形の表現に相当する英語として「an apple-polisher」、「an asskisser」、「a bootlicker」、「a brownnoser」などがある。日本語の「ゴマをする」と英語の「polish the apple」の表現にやや類似性が感じられる。
