Dokic comeback misfires
From correspondents in Auckland
03jan06

FORMER world No 4 Jelena Dokic made a dismal start on the comeback trail in the Auckland Classic women's tournament, lasting less than two hours before being beaten unseeded German Julia Schruff in the first round.

She blamed nerves for her 5-7, 7-6 (7/3), 6-1 defeat which included 50 unforced errors.
"I was very nervous and I was very tight and I think that contributed to the loss today," said the 22-year-old, now ranked 376th.

"When I was up 6-5 in the second (set) and getting close to winning, I just got really nervous. I think that's just a lack of matches."

She also joked about her 28 double faults saying she was "getting close to (Anna) Kournikova".

Dokic served six consecutive faults at one point after an umpiring error led to two restarts.

Despite promising to enjoy her rekindled tennis career, the frustrations were clear as she left the court after giving up the third set in just 20 minutes.

"I was very scared of playing again because I haven't been in this position for a long time," Dokic said.

Schruff, ranked 95th in the world, was also a little perplexed by Dokic's erratic serving.

"I didn't think she (would) hit that many double faults. Her second serve was like her first ... not a lot of spin," said the 23-year-old German.

Dokic appeared frustrated from the start despite managing to win the first set after being down 4-5.

The second set was a tit-for-tat affair and ended up going to a tie-break, which Schruff won 7-3.

Errors came from both ends of the court during the match, but in the third and final set Dokic hit some wild returns as the more composed Schruff dominated to win it 6-1.

Dokic, a wild card entry in Auckland, has only next week's Canberra International for match practice ahead of her first Australian Open since 2001.

That ended in controversy when her father Damir, with whom she no longer has contact, took her back to Serbia after accusing organisers of rigging the draw against her.

Tearful Dokic loses on comeback

Jelena Dokic shed tears of frustration as her first match since returning to the Australian fold ended in defeat.
Dokic lost 5-7 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 to German Julia Schruff in the first round of the ASB Women's Tennis Classic in Auckland.

The 22-year-old, now estranged from controversial father Damir, is playing for Australia again after four years under the flag of Serbia & Montenegro.

Dokic's ranking has plunged to 376 and her lack of confidence showed as she racked up 28 double faults.

"I can only laugh at that," Dokic said of her serving jitters.

"I was very scared of playing again because I haven't been in this position for a long time.

"If I could get the nerves away I could have won today and there's nothing to be disappointed about.

"Considering where my ranking is, I wasn't even supposed to play close to a girl ranked 80 in the world."

The former world number four had taken the first set in 49 minutes but her inability to close out the match in the second set shook her resolve and she meekly lost the decider in only 20 minutes.

Dokic has already earned a wildcard to the Australian Open after winning a play-off in December.

She left Australia in 2001 after her father claimed the Australian Open draw had been rigged against her.
