Bartoli easily beats tiring foe

MASON, Ohio -- After 10 seconds had elapsed between points, Marion Bartoli was ready to continue play.
But she'd look across the net and see Maria Kirilenko needing more time to recover. That's how the Frenchwomen knew when to pounce.
"I was much more stronger physically, and she was taking 25-30 seconds," said Bartoli, who beat the Russian, 6-3, 6-3, in Monday's first round of the Western & Southern Women's Open. "It was close to being a (delay) penalty. I could look at her and tell she was tired."
Kirilenko disagreed with her assessment -- "I don't think I looked tired," she said -- but Bartoli appeared to be the stronger of the two late in the second set.
After Bartoli opened a 4-0 lead in the second set and Kirilenko -- at 17 years old, the youngest player in the tournament -- earned back a break to cut the lead to 4-3. Bartoli responded by taking a trip to the bathroom and then swiping the final two games to end the match.
"She tried to change; she knew if she doesn't change, it's going to be 6-0," said Bartoli, ranked 56th in the world. "She tried to be more aggressive. You miss one or two shots, and it turns very quickly. When I came back (from the break), I was more focused."
The win also will serve to help her regain her poise.
In last week's Vancouver Open, Bartoli entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed. In the second round, she was upset by countrywoman Camille Pin.
Monday's victory, she said, should help get her on track.
"Exactly," she said. "Last week, I was a little bit tired. You can have a bad day. It was good for me to come here and have a good match and win."
