MELBOURNE: She may be talking about breaking into the top 50, but in one respect at least, India's teen tennis sensation Sania Mirza is already No. 2. The 18-year-old has been the second-most popular player at the Australian Open, with only Russian bombshell Maria Sharapova ranking above her.
Officially, the tournament's website has registered 1.1 million hits so far and Sania's is the second most visited page in the women's section. Sania has left in her wake Serena Williams, Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova and Dutch-woman Michaella Krajicek (sister of Richard Krajicek) in the top five women's pages.
Among the men, Swiss phenomenon Roger Federer tops the list followed by evergreen Andre Agassi, young guns Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt, and mercurial Marat Safin.
The breaching of the million mark makes it a 53 per cent increase in traffic registered for the same period last year, organisers said. Tennis Australia identified increased traffic from Asia. Japan continued to top the list of nations from the continent logging on, with people from India and China among the top five.
The increased interest from the world's two most populous nations has been attributed to the success of Sania, who became the first Indian woman to reach a Grand Slam third round, and the emergence of talented Chinese players, including Li Na, who beat Sania in the singles final of the Asian Tennis Championships last year. And if one were to go by the logic that those assessing Sania's page would have also visited Serena's, to whom she lost, the American does owe something to her vanquished rival.
The main draw wild card to the ATC winner (Sania got it despite being runner-up because Li Na gained a direct entry) justified Tennis Australia's decision to project the event as 'the Grand Slam of Asia-Pacific'.
