ジョン万次郎群像の萬次郎少年像です。 漁船の遭難漂流と無人島での過酷なサバイバル生活を象徴していて迫力のあるモニュメントです。 1841年に足摺岬沖で万次郎を含めて5名が乗っていた小さな漁船が遭難して太平洋の無人島（鳥島）に漂着し、143日間のサバイバル生活の後、アメリカの捕鯨船ジョンハウランド号に救出されました。 In 1841 at the age of 14, John Manjiro, whose fishing vessel was wrecked in Ashizuri-oki, landed on Torishima Island, where he was rescued by a U.S. whaler and brought to America.
