Swine flu infects Japanese in U.S

A 6-year-old Japanese boy living in Chicago is the first Japanese national confirmed to be infected with the new strain of swine flu, Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone said Friday.

The boy, who attends a kindergarten and a Japanese school, was treated at a Chicago hospital on Tuesday (Chicago time) after he developed a fever of more than 38 degrees.

He was confirmed to be infected Thursday morning. His family says he is recovering, Foreign Ministry officials said.

Officials of the Japanese school decided to cancel classes on Saturday, the school's website said.

Swine flu infections have been confirmed in more than 20 countries and regions.

Although no cases have been confirmed within Japan, employees returned to work after the Golden Week holidays to face stringent steps to prevent a possible spread of the virus.

Employees with fevers were instructed to stay home, while others were ordered to wear masks while commuting and at their desks.

While critics said the companies were overreacting, one company official responded that such steps were necessary to show they were seriously tackling the problem.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd.募金 has "quarantined" 84 employees who returned from Mexico to the company's employee training facility in Nagoya.
