日本國(Zipangu)是一島,在東方大海中,距陸一千五百哩。其島甚大,居民是偶像教徒,而自治其國。據有黃金,其數無限,蓋其所屬諸島有金,而地距陸甚遠,商人鮮至,所以金多無量,而不知何用。

加拿大作曲家Claude Vivier曾是Stockhausen的學生, 但是當時他並未向大部分的西方學院派作曲家一樣,熱中於所謂前衛的複雜技法,或是抽象概念與哲學思維的追求,反而是真誠地藉自己的音樂語言展現對自身內在心景的探索;他作品的演奏就有如舉行某種神秘的儀式,引領著非現實非理性的幻想國度降臨,以死亡或是錐心的孤獨為鑰. 而他音樂最大的特點之一就是主體是單音音樂(monody)的表達方式,歌者演唱自創猶如夢囈的語言,以及在巴里島至伊朗等地旅居數年所給他的影響.

在Philips發行的作品集裡,由De Leeuw指揮Schonberg Ensemble演奏他的四首作品,Prologue pour un Marco Polo,Bouchara,Zipangu與Lonely Child. 這四首完成於80-81年間的作品原本預定用在一部描寫馬可波羅一生的歌劇. 'Zipangu'由弦樂團演奏,大概是Vivier所寫出最具光彩色澤與合聲美感最明顯的作品了. 甚至讓人聯想至近年興起的頻譜學派的概念. 從他在81年的作品'WO BIST DU LICHT'開頭打算用古典樂器模擬疊加出正弦波,就能說明如此聯想應該不會太牽托...
