カナダってどんな国？ What is Canada like?

カナダというとまず何を何を思い浮かべますか？
What does Canada remind you of?

国が広い。そうです。ロシアに次いで世界で二番目に大きい国です。（ちなみに日本は62位ですが。。）
Yes, it's a big country. Canada is the second largest country next to Russia. (Japan is 62nd, so small!)

ただしカナダの大部分が北極圏なので、アメリカとの国境の比較的暖かい都市にちょうど細いベルトのようになって人口が集中しています。
However, since most of Canada is in the Arctic Circle, the population is concentrated in relatively warm areas alongside the US border.

それでは人口はどうでしょうか？国の面積は世界第2位なのに、人口となるとなんと39位（3,700万人）になっています。
Then how about the population? Though the land size is the second largest, it has only 37 million people making Canada's ranking 39th.

参考までに、一位はもちろん中国（14億5千万人), 2位はインド, 3位がアメリカで日本は11位（１億2700万人）です。
As you know, China has the largest population of 1,441 million people followed by India and then USA. Japan is the 11th with 127 million people.

カナダには10の州と３つの準州があります。州はProvince(発音はフランス語読みのプロバンス）で準州はTerritories (原住民のテリトリーの意味があるので必ず複数形をつかいます）。
There are ten provinces and 3 territories. ”Province" is pronounced “provance” like the French word, Province. Territories have to be always in plural because they consist of different territories, the aboriginal people’s communities.

州は西からブリティッシュ・コロンビア、アルバータ、マニトバ、サスカチュワン、オンタリオ、ケベック、ニュー・ブランズウィック、ノバ・スコシア、プリンス・エドワード島(PEI)、ニュー・ファウンドランド州です。
Let’s look at the ten Provinces from west to east; British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskachewan, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia (means new Scotland), Prince Edward Island (PEI), and New Foundland.

特にプリンス・エドワード島は赤毛のアンで有名です。ところが驚いたことに日本人観光客が来るまではだれも”赤毛のアン”を知らなかったそうです！
Many Japanese know about “Anne of Green Gables.” However, surprisingly, almost no Canadian knew about it until Japanese tourists started to visit Anne’s homeland, PEI.

バンフ、レイク・ルイーズ、ジャスパーなどで有名なカナディアン・ロッキーがあるのがアルバータ州です。
Alberta has popular Canadian Rocky Mountain sites like Banff, Lake Louise, and Jasper.

準州は同じく西から、ユーコン、ノース・ウエスト、そしてヌナバットの３つの準州です。日本の観光客がオーロラを見に行くのはノースウエスト準州です。
Territories from west to east: Yukon, Northwest, and Nunavut territories.
Many tourists go to Northwest territories to see the world famous “northern light.’

カナダのトップ３の都市は一位がトロント（オンタリオ州）、2位がフランス語圏のモントリオール（ケベック州）、そして3位が私が住んでいる西海岸のバンクーバー（ブリティッシュ・コロンビア州）です。
The top three biggest cities are Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Toronto is in Ontario. It has the world famous Great Lakes and the Niagara Falls. Montreal is in the French speaking province, Quebec, and their maple syrups and ice wines are very popular worldwide. Vancouver where I live boasts beautiful scenery, mild weather, and international cuisines.

間違えを恥ずかしがらないで。 Don't be embarrased by your mistakes.

我が家の二匹のメス猫がオレガノの鉢を挟んで気持ちよさそうにお昼寝をしています。この二匹は決して仲良しではありませんが、今日はなぜか一緒に同じ場所で昼下がりのひと時を過ごしています。オレガノの香りが好きなのでしょうか？彼女たちのお昼寝の姿は決して美しくはありません。でも良いのです。猫には羞恥心なんてないので。。。
I have two female cats.Though they don't get along very well, today they enjoy their afternoon nap together around the pot of oregano plants. Perhaps they like the fragrance ? The way they nap is quite unbecoming. But that's OK because cats don't have a sense of shame.

羞恥心といえば、英語の勉強に関していうと日本人は羞恥心がありすぎます。他の国から来ている人たちはいくらヘタでも気楽にどんどん英語を話しています。
Japanese usually become very self-conscious when it comes to speaking English. In contrast the people from other countries are much more relaxed.

カナダは移民で出来ている国なので、ここに住んでいるとネイティブでない色々な種類の英語に接する機会があります。
As Canada largely consists of immigrants whose first language is not English, we come across with many different English spoken by a variety of non-native speakers.

１回目のブログでお話ししたようにカナダは英語とフランス語が国語に指定されているバイリンガルの国です。ただし私が住んでいるブリティッシュ・コロンビア州はその名の通り英語圏です。
As I mentioned in my first blog, Canada is an English-French Bilingual country. And I live in the Province of British Columbia, which is English-speaking, as the name suggests.

私が住んでいるバンクーバーはカナダで二番目に暖かい西海岸の最南端の都市で、アジアの国々に近いということもあり近年とくに中国や他のアジアのからの移民が増えています。
I live in Vancouver. It is the second warmest city in Canada because it is located in the south end of the west coast and many immigrants from Asian countries like to settle here.

彼らは見た目は日本人に似ているかもしれませんが、英語に対する態度は全く正反対です。
Though these Asian people may look somewhat similar to Japanese, their attitude towards English is very different.

多分日本人だったら諦めてしまうだろうと思うような場合でも、彼らははかなりブロークンな英語でも必要に迫られると必死でコミュニケートしようとしています。
Most Japanese in Japan would give up speaking English if they cant get it right. But the new immigrants here would try their best to communicate even with their vrery basic English skills.

日本人は受験英語を学んでいるので、友達や近所の人たちとのカジュアルな会話の時でさえ間違えは許されないという意識がいつの間にか頭の中に居座ってしまいるのだと思います。
Since Japanese are so used to studying English for the purpose of passing exams, they subconsciously think they cannot make mistakes even in casual conversations with friends or neighbors.


語学の勉強に必要な二つのポイントは正確さと流暢さです。日本人はあまりにも正確さを重視するので流暢さがすっかり犠牲になっています。
Now there are two significantt points for studying English. One is ACCURACY and the other is FLUENCY. Japanese often become too serious about accuracy, their fluency part gets forgotten.

私自身の経験からも言えますが、間違えをするとそのことがしっかりと記憶に残るのです。恥ずかしがって何も言わずに帰ってしまっては何も残りません。
You learn from your own mistakes. I can endorse the statement from my own experiences. Nothing will stay in your memory if you just leave the scene without saying anything.

もっと勇気を出して気楽に話してください。間違えを恥ずかしいなどと思わないで。"a"を使うのか"an"を使うのか、"the"を使うのかなんて悩まないでください。それは日常会 話に自信がついてからで良いのです。
Be bold and try communicating with many people. Do not feel embarrassed or ashamed of making mistakes. Do not spend time deciding "a", "an" or "the". You can worry about these when your basic conversation skills have developed.

たくさん話してたくさん間違えて、それの繰り返しでコミュニケーションの大切さを実感し英語が上達するのです。
Talk as often as possible with many people and don't worry about making mistakes. If you repeat this exercise, you will understand the importance of communication and your conversation skills will definitely improve.

英語で世界を広めましょう。 Learn English and broaden your world.

忘れないうちに写真の説明をしましょう。これはバンクーバー市内にあるバンデューセン・ガーデンのラバーナム並木道です。
毎年５月になると真っ黄色のラバーナムが満開になり、鮮やかな黄色いトンネルのようになります。その下にある紫色の玉のようなのはネギ科のアリウムです。
この黄色と紫色の配合がなんとも言えない美しさを醸し出してくれます。バンクーバーの５月は新緑が瑞々しく一年中で一番きれいな季節でしょう。ただ５月は年によっては雨が多いこともあるので、旅行で来るのならやっぱり７月か８月がおすすめです。　
Before I start today's topic, I will explain the photo above. It is called "Laburnam Walk" in Van Dusen Botanical Garden in Vancouver. Every year in May, the golden yellow laburnum flowers will bloom in full creating a tunnel like "Laburnum Walk". The purple balls underneath are Allium, one of the onion group plants. The combination of the two colours provides the utmost floral beauty I have ever seen. May seems to be the most beautiful month in Vancouver. However, if you are planning to come to Vancouver for holiday, I will recommend you to do so in the the summer months like July and August as May weather can be quite unpredictable.

前のブログのタイトルは　”なぜ英語を学ぶのでしょう”でしたが、今回がその答えのひとつです。
The title of my last blog was "Why do we study English?", and this is one of the answers.

英語を知っていると皆さんの世界が広まるのです。
If you know English, you can broaden your own world.

例えば映画、ドラマ、ニュースなども英語を知っているとほぼ世界中のものを自由に見たり聞いたりすることができます。
For example, you can watch movies, tv dramas, or you can listen to the radio news from almost all over the world.

本や雑誌の選択肢も大きく広がります。翻訳には時間がかかるし、また翻訳されていないものでもたくさん良いものがあります。
You can choose books and magazines from much wider selections, and it will be so much faster than wating for the translations. Besides, there are many excellent books that haven't been translated into Japanese

英語は今では特にインターネット上で大活躍をしています。英語で検索すると日本語だけでのと比べると比較にならないほどの情報の違いがあります。
Nowaday, English has been used almost exclusively in the Internet world. If you do a search in English, you canl receive so much more resources than merely relying on Japanese sites.

私は先月からCoursera (coursera.org)というオンラインのコースでYale大学の心理学の聴講を始めています。聴講は無料です。英語を知っていれば誰でも聴講できます。Courseraには世界中の大学からのコースが5,000以上あり東京大学その一つです。。
I started to audit an Introductory course of Psychology offered at Yale University through the Intertnet University Course site called Coursera. Audit is totally free, and anyone can do it as long as you know English. They offer over 5,000 courses from all over the world including Tokyo University.

また数ヶ月前からDuolingo（Duolingo.com)というオンラインの語学プログラムを使ってフランス語を習っています。フランス語を初め、スペイン語、ドイツ語、中国語など37の外国語を英語ベースのプログラムで学ぶことができるのです。このプログラムは全て英語がベースですが、大学程度の英語力が必要なCourseraとは違い、Duolingoで使われている英語はごく基礎的なものなので、ある程度の知識があれば問題なく使えるはずです。
A few monthes ago, I started rechallenging my French using the online program called Duolingo. They have 37 languages including French, Spanish, German, etc. Unfortunately, there is no English because English is the base language they use to teach foreign languages.　However, unlike Coursera which requires univrsity level English, Duolingo's instructions are very simple.

英語を知っていると自由に海外旅行ができるとか外国人と会話ができるだけでなく、世界中とつながることによってあなた自身の世界が大きく広がります。
If you know English, not only you can travel abroad freely and can communicate in international occasions, but you can also expand your own world by linking yourself to the whole globe!

なぜ英語を学ぶのでしょう？ Why do you study English?

今では早いところでは小学校一年生から英語の授業が始まります。それで４年生の大学まで進めばなんと１６年間英語を学び続けることになります。私たちの時代では英語は中学一年生から始まりましたが、その場合でさえも１０年間英語を学ぶ計算になります。

Now some primary school start teaching English from as early as grade one. In that case, people will be studying English for 16 years if they go to university. In our generation, we did not start learning English till first year of the middle school. Even so, we have 10 solid years of English education!

それだけ時間をかけて学んだはずなのに、実際に使おうとすると全く思うように使えないということは多くの人が経験されたかと思います。

Though we have  spent so much time and efforts, our English doesn't seem to be working when we try to apply it in our daily life.

 

それはきっと英語を生きた言語としてでなく、受験や偏差値向上のためのツールとした歪曲した形で捉えて来ていたからでしょう。

It is perhaps because English wasn't treated as a living language. Instead it was a mere instrument for passing an entrance exams or improving your GPA(grade point average- almost equivalent to "hensachi" or a standard deviation of the test score).

でも朗報があります。皆さんが学生時代に学んだ英語は決して無駄にはなっていません。実生活では全く役に立たないように見える複雑で面倒な文法や長文読解や一見無意味に見える数多くの語彙は今でもしっかり皆さんの記憶のどこかにしまい込まれているはずです。

But I have good news for you! English you have learned at school is not going to be a waste. Although it may seem like  useless in your daily life because of its complex grammar,  long and tedious reading materials and meaningless vocabulary, English is still embedded in you.

今から正しい学習法で勉強を始めると、今までに学んだ知識を生かしながら総合的な語学力を高めることができることは間違えありません。

If you start learning English again with the right method, your overall English ability will surely improve with the help of  what you have already learnt from before.

 

(補足ですが）先週の１回目のブログでは写真の説明をしませんでした。あれは今住んでいるバンクーバーのコンドのパティオです。５年前に移って来た時はほとんど何もありませんでしたが、今では念願のEnglish Garden風のパティオになりました。テーブルにラップトップをおいて素敵なプライベートな空間を作りました。。。

(Afterthought) I did not explain to you about the photo on my first blog. It is a patio of our condminium in Vancouver. When we moved here five years ago, there was almost nothing on the patio. Now it started to look like an English garden that I always dreamt of. So, I created a beautiful space for myself with my laptop and a cup of coffee.

ところが、思うようにはいきませんでした。そこに猫が気持ちよさそうにお昼寝をしているのです。猫と一緒でもいいかと思いましたが、パソコンを開いた瞬間にキーボードの上に座られてしまいました。仕方なく諦めました。

However, it didn't work the way I planned. It is a perfect place for my cat to nap. I tried to share the place with her, but as soon as I open the laptop, she kept sitting on its keyboard. I gave up.

ふと思いついたのですが、庭仕事は語学の勉強と似たところがあります・熱心に行うと草花は健康に育っていきます。これからは皆さんがこのブログをよ見ながら楽しく英語を学んでくださることを願っています。

When I was working in my patio, it came to my mind that the language learning is just like gardening. If you put your efforts whole heartedly, the plants will grow happily. So, your English learning should be the same way. I hope you will read my future blogs, enjoy studying English, and improve it with confidence and joy.

カナダーバイリンガルの国 Canada - A Bilingual Country

 

 

初めまして。カナダ、バンクーバーからお便りします。

Hello, I will be reaching out to you from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

ご存知の方もおられるかと思いますが、カナダは英語とフランス語の二つの言語を公用語とするバイリンガルの国です。

As you may know, Canada is an English-French Bilingual Country.

私のユーザーネーム”malangue" はフランス語の”ma langue"英語でmy language(私のことば)の意味で、カナダの英仏二か国語国家性を意識して名付けました。

My user name, "malangue" is from French "ma langue" which means my language."  I have deliberately chosen this to reinforce Canadian bilingualism.

ただバイリンガルと言っても、今では英語人口が増え反対にフランス語人口は減って行っています。

Although Canada Is bilingual, the number of English speakers (anglophone) are increasing and Francophone decreasing.

カナダの国勢調査によると英語とフランス語が使われている割合はおよそ７対３で、これからも英語人口が増えることは間違いありません。

According to Statistics Canada, the ratio of English vs French speakers is about 7:3, and the number of Anglophones will definitely keep increasing in the future.

その大きな理由は私自身も含めある程度の英語の知識があるアジアなどからの移民の数が増えていること、そして今日の国際社会、異文化社会におけるコミュニケーションにはほとんど英語が使われているということです。それに付け加え近年ではコンピューター用語はどの言語でも英語を基盤にして使っているようです。

There are two significant  reasons for this phenomenon. Firstly, including myself, there are many landed immigrants from Asian countries such as China, Philippines, Korea, etc., where people have received adequate English education in their original countries. Another reason is since almost everyone uses English for international or intercultural communication. In addition, it seems that English is used exclusively in computer related areas in most languages.

これは余談ですが、ケベックに住むフランス系カナダ人の多くはバイリンガルです。残念なことに英語圏の人で流暢なフランス語を話す人はほとんど見かけません。ただし外国で育ってカナダに移民してき人のほとんどがバイリンガルまたは３ヶ国語以上の言語を話します。

I just wish to clarify that many Quebecois (people who originate from Quebec) are bilingual. In contrast, there are very few English speakers who speak fluent French.  However, most landed immigrants who came from other countries have studied English in their own countries are bilingual and sometimes speak more than 3 languages!
