石川雲蝶をご存知ですか？
幕末から明治初期にかけて、数多くの彫刻作品などを新潟各地の寺などに残しました。私は全く知らなかったのですが、見てビックリ

寺の天井や欄間に施された彫刻は、その場所に行かなければ見ることができません。多くの人に雲蝶を知ってもらいたいと思いました

He worked from the end of Edo period to the beginning of Meji Era and left many sculptures and other works at the temples all over Nigata Prefecture.
I have never heard of him before, but I can't forget being impressed to see his works for the first time.  I would like many people to know Uncho and his works.

1月18日は八海山のコブを堪能したものの、やはり暖冬の影響で雪が少なく、湯沢に宿泊したもののスキーは断念😢 
越後湯沢駅の観光ガイドに載っていた、「日本のミケランジェロ」という言葉に惹かれ、それが見られる魚沼市のお寺に行くことにしました。
車で湯沢から1時間ほどでした😉

Though I enjoyed skiing on the slopes with so many beautiful bumps in Hakkaisan Ski Resort on January 18, I gave up skiing near Yuzawa Station, where I stayed overnight at a hotel on the next day....because of short of snow due to the abnormally warm winter.
I got a free travel brochure at Echigoyuzawa station and found the words saying Michelangelo in Japan.  I decided to go to some temples in Uonuma City to see it.
It took about 1 hour by car from Yuzawa.

この建物の中で、日本のミケランジェロと言われる石川雲蝶の大作が見られるということですが、裏側から見ると「かなりショボい」という感じで、「大丈夫かな～～」という心配が先立ちます😩 

It is said that magnificent works of Ishikawa Uncho, who is called as Michelangelo in Japan (I've never heard of him before though...), are in this small,  rather shabby hut, but....I doubted if it is true....at first....

こんな田舎（失礼）の小さなお寺の門ですが、とても魅力的な彫刻が！
This is just a wooden gate of a small temple in a rural area...but....
Look at this attractive carvings!

西福寺は1534年に開かれたということですが、この開山堂は江戸幕末の1857年に6年間の歳月をかけて完成したということです。
一見、ただの小さな小屋のようですが、唐破風向拝（屋根を正面の階段上に張り出した部分）をよく見てみると驚きでした😲 
これが雲蝶の手による彫刻です😍 

Saifukuji temple was said to be opened in 1534 and it took six years to complete  this Kaizando in 1857, at the end of Edo Period.
Though at first glance, it looks like a normal small hut, you can't help but get  surprised when you see the sculptures by Uncho, a magnificent sculptor, under the eaves of the front side.

↑石川雲蝶について About Ishikawa Uncho

雲蝶は1814年、現在の東京豊島区にある雑司ヶ谷で生まれ、30歳のころに新潟の三条に来たようです。39歳の時から6年かけて、開山堂の吊り天井の大作などを仕上げ、1883年（明治16年）、70歳で生涯を閉じるまで、新潟に多くの作品を残したそうです。

雲蝶の作品は近年（1990年以降？）まで、それほど有名ではなかったようですが、NHKのテレビ番組『古寺巡礼』で古美術品鑑定家の中島誠之助が「越後のミケランジェロだ」と叫んで以来、知名度が高まったようです。実物を見てその素晴らしさを実感！もっと有名になって欲しいと思いました。
火事や災害から作品が守られ、長く後世に伝わればと…切に思いました

Ishikawa Uncho was born in Zoshigaya, which is in Toshima ward in Tokyo now, in 1814 and became a sculptor.
He came to Sanjo in Nigata prefecture at the age of 30.
When he was 39, he was asked to work at Saifukuji-temple. It is said that it took 6 years to coplete the hanging ceiling with magnificent sculptures, etc. of Kaizan-do.
He passed away in 1883 at the age of 70 and left so many works in Nigata Prefecture.

 

Uncho's works can be seen only in rural areas in Nigata, so he was not known to the public until NHK televised his works recently (after 1990?). 
I hope he will be more famous and his works will be preserved from disasters like fire and passed on to posterity.

As taking pictures inside the temple was prohibited, I uploaded some pictures taken from brochurs I got. 

↑雲蝶の作品は、新潟の色々な寺などに多数残されているそうです。

This map shows that there are many works by Uncho left at many temples in Nigata prifecture.

5.5ｍ四方の吊り天井に施された彫刻は、岩絵の具で塗り上げられています。 
周りの欄間透かし彫りや鬼退治の仁王像（高さ2mあまりのケヤキ一本彫）も素晴らしいです。

5.5 square-meter hanging ceiling was sculptured and painted with Iwa Enogu (natural mineral pigments).
Openwork transoms are also amazing.
About two-meter-tall statue Nio-zo (a kind of Deva) was sculptued of one huge zelkova.

Can you see a monk Dogen with black kimono, sitting in zen meditation and taming a fierce tiger, in the hanging ceilling?

本堂にある襖絵で、不老長寿の園に通じる橋「石橋（しゃっきょう）」がこの絵の主題とのこと。こちらも雲蝶によって描かれた作品で、彫刻家としても画家としても素晴らしかったことがわかります。

This was also painted by Uncho.  You can see he was a great painter as well as a great sculptor.

 

   

永林寺（新潟県魚沼市）
Eirinji Temple in Uonuma city, Nigata Pref.

2004年10月23日に発生した新潟県中越地震(M6.8)で、この辺りは震度6弱あり、写真右側の母屋には相当の被害があり建て替えられたとのこと。
写真が、左側の本堂には、それほどの被害がなかったということです。
本堂には、欄間の天女の透かし彫り、蛇身鳥物語の天井画、鶏などの欄間絵など、石川雲蝶の数々の作品がありますが、被害はなかったとのことでした。（お寺の方の話）

I've heard that the right side of the temple was collapsed by the Chuetsu earthquakes on October 23, 2004.  Fortunately the left side Hondo (Main Part), which has many works made by Uncho, was scarcely damaged.
