At the vintage US Grant Hotel in San Diego, Mother's Day tea on Saturday starts with Champagne and bellinis. Then come the strawberries and Devonshire cream, scones, tea sandwiches stuffed with smoked salmon and other goodies, tea cakes and chocolate pastries. Horseback riding and wine tasting
A bit of exercise and a bit of wine might be the ideal combination for Mother's Day. Moms and kids can take a horseback ride through the vineyards at Cooper-Garrod Estate Vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains, then sample wines and hear an afternoon concert. Guided horseback rides from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. cost $45 an hour. The tasting room is open 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and costs $5. Native costumes at Fowler Museum at UCLA
Mom can peruse 50 native costumes, such as this woman's coat made in Kosovo, on display in the exhibition "Resplendent Dress From Southeastern Europe" at the Fowler Museum at UCLA. From 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, there's a Kids in the Courtyard workshop where children can make gifts for Mom. At 3 p.m., the Zhena Folk Chorus will perform native dances. Wildflower walk
Instead of buying flowers for Mother's Day, take Mom to the mountains to see some. Baldwin Lake Ecological Reserve, east of Big Bear Lake, is an intermittent lake that dries up after the snow melts and then blooms with wildflowers. Southern California Mountains Foundation docents lead a free wildflower hike at 11:30 a.m. Saturday (and every Saturday through June 29) to see Phlox dolicantha (pictured) as well as buckwheat, Douglas' violets and other blooms. Airline gift card and cancer research
American Airlines offers a give-back gift for Mom that comes with opportunities for future travel. Purchase a $50 gift card from American Airlines and the Susan G. Komen Foundation and $5 will be donated to help fund a breast cancer research grant. Gift cards are available from $50 to $100 and may be applied to future travel. 6. チョコレートフェステイバル！！
Chocolate Festival at San Diego Botanic Garden
It's a fantastic mix of flowers and sweets: the Chocolate Festival on Saturday at San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas. Mom and the gang can sample chocolates from vendors and attend sessions (for $1 a ticket) on how to make a flourless chocolate almond tart and desserts on the grill.
