Recently, people concentrate more and more on the education of university students. Mental health issue is one of the hottest topics. Many discussions are about the reasons causing students’ mental health and
the methods to overcome the problems. Mental health is important at every stage of our lives, from childhood to adolescence and then throughout the whole adulthood. Because mental health influences what we
speak, how we act and think. It affects every decision we make. According to a report by UFCWC (2015), “The competition for grades, the need to perform, relationships, fear of AIDS, career choice, and many
other aspects of the college environment cause stress” (UFCWC, 2015).The essay will discuss academic pressure including exam pressure, peer pressure and parental pressure cause stress among university
students.
Exam pressure is the biggest factor to affect university students. To many students, exam is their common cause of anxiety, because if they get bad grades, they would feel very stressful. Take Chinese students
as example, exam grade is often the only standard to judge a student’s performance. Before college, the grade of College Entrance Examination decides whether students can get access to university. After
finally entering the door of university, exam grades decide scholarship, job-hunting, and etc.
Peer pressure is also a critical factor causing stress for students. Peers play a large role in individual development of students. Students are often forced to do something even if they don’t want to, because
“The reason that you may decide to change your mind and do what they say is because you may want to 'fit in' and be part of a group” (Kids Helpline, 2014). Because of the same age, students who are worse at
academic performance are likely to be criticized or judged by the outside society.
Academic parental pressure often causes more stress than peer pressure. As reported by Jaime Budzienski (2015), “Many parents put intense pressure on their children to earn perfect grades, no matter the cost.
Experts warn that this type of intense pressure around school and performance can backfire, leading to social, emotional and physical stress” (Budzienski, 2015). On the one hand, students get stressed because
their parents ask them to study intensively so as to get good performance. On the other hand, students get anxiety for fear of failing the high expectation from the parents. Many students may even perform worse
because of their anxiety.
To reduce the stress of the three kinds of pressure, maintaining a healthier lifestyle is a key solution. As is shown in the report of Stress & The College Student (2006, p.4), maintaining a healthier lifestyle
is good for coping with stress such as taking aerobatic exercise, balanced meals, less alcohol and etc. Physical health can increase students’ ability to fight stress. For parental pressure, students still
need learn to communicate with their parents or ask for their teachers help if they don’t now how. If the pressure problem is very serious, students need to ask for professional service from psychological
teachers.
In Conclusion, academic pressure is the main cause of university students’ mental health including exam pressure, peer pressure and parental pressure. To reduce the stress, students need to maintain physical
health or talk to their parents. If the stress is too much, they have to accept professional help from psychological teachers.
