inとofの使い分け

Q: 比較の文で、「～のうちの・・・」というとき、inとofはどのように使い分ければよいですか。

A: 前置詞の使い方は難しいのですが、比較の文では次のように使い分けるとよいです。

X in＋比較の範囲(Xを含む集団・場所を表す単数名詞)

the smartest guy in my class
the oldest son in my family
the highest mountain in Japan
the longest river in the world

Y of＋比較する相手(Yと同類の複数を表す名詞)

the fastest runner of the four
the fastest runner of all
the fastest runner of the three girls
the fastest runner of all my classmates
