Beating heart of a quantum time machine exposed

BEHOLD, the beating heart of a time machine! Or "clock", as most people call them, but this one is nothing like your grandfather's. This super-accurate timekeeper is an optical atomic clock built by the UK's National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and its tick is governed by a single ion of the element strontium. The ion is trapped in an electromagnetic field within the small cube at the centre and cooled with lasers to just a fraction above absolute zero. The lasers are fired through three of the glass shafts emanating from the cube, but must be carefully directed out of the other side to prevent them scattering within the clock, which is why there are six shafts in total.Once the ion is cooled, another laser makes it resonate between two energy states with an incredible regularity governed by quantum mechanics. It gives off a regular pulse of optical radiation exactly 444,779,044,095,485 times per second.Mobile crusher

Don't be fooled by the orange light, it has nothing to do with the ion. It's just the hot glow of a wire that measures the quality of the vacuum within the cube.Vibrating screen "You can see a bright spot in the middle, I hesitate to say whether that is fluorescence from an ion, but that's where it is located," says NPL's Patrick Gill.Despite its sophistication, the clock's round face and equally spaced arms give it a familiar look. Gill, though, sees something totally different. "What with the arms coming off," he says, "I always call it the Buddha."

Commenting on the results, Chairman/CEO GEORGE G. BEASLEY said,"BEASLEY BROADCAST GROUP ended 2012 strongly as fourth-quarter net revenue rose 9.Vibrating feeder1% and same-station net revenue increased 5.7%. Fourth-quarter revenue growth reflects several factors including the cyclical return of political advertising particularly in our LAS VEGAS, MIAMI and WILMINGTON market clusters, continued strength in key advertising categories including automotive, a full quarter's contribution from KOAS-F/LAS VEGAS which was acquired in the third quarter, and overall strength in the Company's PHILADELPHIA, LAS VEGAS, FORT MYERS and AUGUSTA market clusters."Net revenue rose 9.1% to $27.4 million from $25.2 million in Q4 2011. He says that going through the motions of signing and sending a fax, something most young players have never done, "makes it a more solemn, more serious, more memorable event."But the shining signing moment for the fax machine doesn't last long. The whir of faxes printing dies down in the afternoon. Fax web cams go dark as fans head to comment sections and social to dissect signings and fight about which school won the year's recruitment war."For about a 24-hour period,Magnetic toe ringHydraulic cone crusher it's all eyes on the fax machine," says Mike Farrell, who oversees recruiting coverage for the college sports site Rivals. U.N. green machine to fine Navy for reef grounding

It's bad enough the U.S.bench grinder Navy grounded its minesweeper, the USS Guardian, in the Philippines. It's even worse the $227 million ship will have to be dismantled in order to remove it from the reef. But now, environmentalists with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization want to fine the United States for the ship's damage to the coral reef, a listed World Heritage Site.non-stick knifeUnited Press International says the U.S. faces fines of $90 for each square foot of reef that's damaged. The area the shipstruck is part of the Tubbataha Reef, spanning 98 nautical milesin the Central Sulu Sea.The Navy struck a section of the reef on Jan. 17. The Guardian reported Wednesday that Navy officials said the only way to remove the ship ― without causing further damageto the reef ― would be to tear it in pieces and then cart away the sections.Grace Barber, an administrator with the World Heritage site, said the U.S. Navy violated three park rules by striking the reef: The USS Guardian didn't get permission to enter the park, it didn't pay the park entrance fee, and it got in the way of park rangers who were trying to investigate the crash, UPI reported.

Gun Machine by Warren Ellis

2013-02-04 10:58:28 | electronics

Gun Machine's opening pages are a shotgun-delivered statement of intent: a naked lunatic is gunned down in a frantic shootout that approaches black comedy, along with one of the two police detectives who are pursuing him. It's a ludicrous pace with which to open, and one that, you would assume, Warren Ellis would be unable to maintain. You would assume wrong.Surviving detective John Tallow notices a gun-blasted hole into an apartment and, inside it,Jaw crusher a weapons cache hundreds-deep hanging from the walls. It transpires that these are famous guns: there's a flintlock pistol used in one of the first murders on record in New York; guns used by the police to take down criminals; even serial killer Son of Sam's .44 Bulldog.knives wholesaler (It's perhaps here that you most notice the influence of Ellis's award-winning comics work, notably the near-fetishistic gun-porn notes of his seminal cyberpunk saga Transmetropolitan.) Each gun has subsequently been used to commit another murder before being stored as a trophy, leaving behind a vast number of unsolved cases. In a move clearly intended to bury his career, Tallow is ordered to find out who is behind it. He's given no time to mourn his partner; no time to breathe.

It's a tribute to Ellis's exceptional skills that you don't need to take that breath either. As Tallow assembles a team to help him – a pair of crime-scene unit investigators, filthy-mouthed, larger than life, pushed to the verge of caricature but never slipping over – the story doesn't let up. The narrative splits its focus between Tallow and the killer, sometimes bringing them within a hair's breadth of each other, and is written with the precision of the finest procedurals. Tallow is likable, a gruff loner who mourns the days of vinyl records and print media, yet embraces modern technology.wholesale wedding dresses It's as if a younger Rebus had been dragged to New York, wholesale wedding dresses given a sense of humour and allowed to unwind a little.Household scissors The killer is equally well realised, a curiously controlled psychopath whose motive and skills lead you to believe him unstoppable. Both characters are entwined with New York, obsessed with its history and how it became the place it is. We see two sides of the city: its past, through occasionally surreal mini-history lessons delivered by the killer and other characters; and the five-minutes-into-the-future representation of the modern day that Tallow inhabits.
