When Debbie Stewart's boyfriend called to warn her he had spotted a giant tornado headed for their Henryville home, she and her daughter Kayla, 17, began frantically tossing things out of a closet so they could take shelter in it.
"It sounded awful. The walls were shaking," Debbie said. They stayed in the closet for just minutes, but "it seemed like hours." Most of the shingles were torn off their home's roof and hail pinched fist-size holes in the green siding. But both were glad to be alive.
Debbie's boyfriend, Roger Lesnet, 59, said he was "as nervous as I've ever been" when he saw the approaching tornado. "The funnel cloud was like a big stovepipe hanging down," he said.
Yvonne Peterson, 60, a retired teacher and her husband, George, 62, retired from a manufacturing job, were staying in their home here despite shattered glass doors and windows and a hole in the kitchen where a fallen tree broke through.
They rode out the storm in an interior closet. "We heard the proverbial loud train noise and knew we had to take cover," she said.
Nearby, Nick Shelton surveyed the wreckage that had been Henryville Auto Service. Shelton started the business last year, after 25 years as a mechanic. It was destroyed in five minutes.
"That's my life-long dream right there," he said, "and it's on the ground."

A police officer has denied seeing his colleagues laugh, joke and take pictures when they raided a house where a member of the "Urewera four" was allegedly staying in October 2007.
Sergeant Craig Cartwright, officer in charge of exhibits found at a Ruatoki house where one of the accused in the trial – Urs Signer – was alleged to have stayed in October 2007,If all the information officers had Lawn light them to reasonably believe he may have been in possession of firearm, gave evidence yesterday in the High Court at Auckland.
Signer, Tame Iti, Emily Bailey and Te Rangikaiwhiria Kemara have been charged with illegal possession of firearms and participation in an organised criminal group. They have pleaded not guilty.
Signer was allegedly staying in a sleep-out at the house.
Mr Cartwright said that early in the morning of October 15, 2007, police searched the house and found a number of items, including a police scanner and a list of frequencies, a rifle cleaning kit, two balaclavas and several rounds of ammunition.
He said a "revolutionary-type" pamphlet entitled Armed Joy and a book called The Commando Survival Manual were found in a car, which police believed belonged to Signer, parked outside the house.

Earlier yesterday the court was told that a member of the Urewera four confronted an undercover policeman who was covertly monitoring her. Police officer John Fagan was questioned about surveillance of Bailey during that year.
Mr Fagan told the court about an occasion in July 2007 at Wellington railway station, where Bailey confronted him as he and a colleague were about to take covert photographs of her handing out pamphlets protesting against open-cast mining.
Stephen Dominguez spined, bounced and tapped his feet as he led a dozen people through his new dance, "The CoFo Shuffle."
"From the beginning!" he said as "Birthday Party" by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five blared in the conference room. "Five, six, seven ... we go to the left and two, we step up and back and turn. No, I don't want to turn, forget it."
The students laughed. Unlike their 17-year-old leader, these folks aren't aspiring professional dancers. They are staffers with College Forward,RGB color changing LEDs, LED fixtures, LED under counter lights, flexible LED strips, Led light bulbs, commercial LED lighting. a Manor nonprofit that helps youth from low-income families get into college. And Dominguez, a high school senior who has been participating in the program since September 2010, is helping them choreograph a dance for their March 31 fundraiser. They call it "The CoFo Shuffle."
"He was perfect for this project," said Kameko Jacobs, a college coach with the nonprofit. "He's like a ball of energy at all times."
This is what Dominguez does; he dances. The Manor New Tech High School student has lots of hobbies, including student council, running, National Honor Society and playing the trombone. But his big dream, of course, is to be a star. It's not hard to imagine him with his name in lights. Dominguez, a lean teen with dark hair and a big smile, somehow seems animated even when he's sitting still.
"If you can't have fun with Stephen in the room, then I'd say you just can't have fun," said Sara McCabe, College Forward's director of external relations.
Dominguez said he was born dancing, but he officially started his training a little later than that. The only child, who lives with his mom in Austin, took a community class at a local school when he was 12 years old, where he learned jazz, hip-hop and other dance styles. But it was tap that seized his interest.
That class led to more lessons, including a year at Ballet Austin. When he was 14 years old, a friend asked him to choreograph her quinceanera, the traditional party that celebrates a girl's 15th birthday. Then his cousin asked him to do the same for her. Word spread, and soon Dominguez was being offered paying gigs.
He's taken lots of lessons, so teaching came naturally, he said. Watching him with his College Forward friends, it's obvious he likes it.
"Have fun," he called, as his students try to mimic his moves. "Any way you want to have fun, you can. You can have fun with a partner!"
Dominguez spontaneously turned, grabbed Jacobs' arm and the two swung in a circle. Two women in the back started playing patty cake. Others freestyled while maneuvering around conference tables. The room was festive and light. And that, Dominguez said, is one of the reasons he plans on dancing for the rest of his life.
Johnson Controls and the U.S. Army announced a federal contract for energy efficiency improvements at Fort Buchanan and U.S. Army Reserve Centers in Puerto Rico. The project will save $61 million in energy and operational costs over the next 16 years and create at least 100 local jobs.
The $34.3 million Energy Saving Performance Contract executed through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville, Ala.Wal-Mart wants to sell 100 million Book scanner this year., will provide the post with renewable energy sources, updated lighting and other innovative systems.
The project will enhance all aspects of energy use at the post, including solar power generation, solar thermal applications, wind power generation, new indoor and exterior LED lighting, a building automation and control system to manage energy at 87 buildings and other energy efficiency improvements. Under this financial partnership, the savings generated from the improvements will fund the cost of the project.
Johnson Controls is guaranteeing the estimated $61 million in savings and will reimburse Fort Buchanan for any savings not realized. The energy efficiency improvements at Fort Buchanan are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to planting more than 1,600 acres of pine forests each year.
The project will help the Army to reach its strategic energy security goals by reducing energy consumption, increasing energy efficiency, adding sources of renewable/alternative energy, assuring access to sufficient energy supplies and reducing adverse environmental impacts.
